Quote:
The word geek is a slang term, noting individuals as "a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc."

Other definitions include:

* A derogatory reference to a person obsessed with intellectual pursuits for their own sake, who is also deficient in most other human attributes so as to impair the person's smooth operation within society.
* A person who is interested in technology, especially computing and new media. Geeks are adept with computers, and use the term hacker in a positive way, though not all are hackers themselves.
* A person who relates academic subjects to the real world outside of academic studies; for example, using multivariate calculus to determine how they should correctly optimize the dimensions of a pan to bake a cake.
* A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one who passionately pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance.
* A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest. This definition is very broad but because many of these interests have mainstream endorsement and acceptance, the inclusion of some genres as "geeky" is heavily debated. Persons have been labeled as or chosen to identify as physics geeks, mathematics geeks, engineering geeks, sci-fi geeks, computer geeks, various science geeks, movie and film geeks (cinephile), comic book geeks, theatre geeks, history geeks, music geeks, art geeks, philosophy geeks, literature geeks, historical reenactment geeks, 2012 geeks, video game geeks, and roleplay geeks.
* A more recent school of thought sees Nerd as being a derogatory phrase, whilst Geek is simply a description. It is taken to be someone who is an enthusiast, often in things outside of the mainstream spectrum, of note is that in this definition, there is no reference to being socially inept in the slightest.

So, where are my fellow geeks, you know who you are. I just thought it weird that we had no thread? Or at least I assume so, I felt rather too lazy to search for it. In any regard, I am wondering how many Geeks (whether you're new to it or not) are here on Gaia. In any regard welcome to the thread, Geek or Not all ye be welcome.

I've just love computers for ages, I still remember when my mom logged me on MSN Messenger for the very first time, I talked to my couzin and I was instantly hooked for decades in a new virtual world. I miss the old days, so many fun things I used to do. Lol

It's gaia, we're all geeky in our own way.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

It could always be worse. You could have a tune to a song suck in your head for as long as you can remember... speaking of which, hmm hmm hmmm hmm hmm, hmm hmm hm. Anyone know it?

Yes I figure people who love anime are 'Anime Geeks' (or Otaku as some people like to call it). I myself am a mix-breed I mainly love technology though. Only gotten into programming a few years ago, but I love it because I get to learn more about how machines work and how software works altogether.

I'm sort of a geek, but when I'm not on the computer or playing video games I'll go out and party.

Comic is temporarily gone while I buy many MANY many Christmas 2k9 items. PM me if you have any!

What I have bolded is what makes me a geek mrgreen

I always think logically and barely I try to use my bias and emotions to a bare minimum with everything in life. The only subject I probably don't use my logic in is women. I still use some like if she doesn't have good morals then I won't date her. But if I emotionally like her and I can't explain logically why, I'll still date her. Also I never ever really do anything mainstream at all because it's mainstream. I mean I happen to like some mainstream things, but I like it because I like it, not because it has anything to do with mainstream. Even if it wasn't mainstream I would still like it.

Worse is when you love something, then it becomes mainstream and everyone loves it. I get sooo damn angry because then everyone's into it and it gets annoying especially with music, you walk around and hear people singing one of your favorite songs just because it was on the radio. God I hate that...

We're also called hikikomori in Japan if we like anime and don't EVER leave the house.

Really? It doesn't bother me at all. Infact I actually get happy because I'm like "Wow people actually like something that has some quality and isn't complete garbage"

But then sometimes it is annoying when you talk to a person about it and you come to realize they have no idea/reasons to why they like it and then you realize this person only likes it because it's popular

I thought that's what they called Otaku. I remember seeing a video about Otaku on youtube that described just that. I'm not really familiar with Japanese / Anime culture as I've said, I'm more of a Technology guy.

No. In Japanese: otaku just means someone who's a huge fan of anything. So if you're like obsessed with the military- you're a military otaku. However- it is more associated with anime than anything else.

Hikkomori doesn't necessarily have to do with anime either. It just means you have no social life and live shut in your room.
