Believe me, the money they get from sponsors can buy a lot more rice than 20 grams. To determine if this rice gets sent to the poor and starving due to people's performance in their game is still pretty messed up any way you look at it.

Well, now rice also has a shortage (probably because of the oil problems) and they have to send the rice there, which is expensive (probably because of the oil problems).

Huh, an interesting question just popped up in my head after you mentioned the game.
It was established long before the food crisis going on right now, whenever rice was "plentiful", or at least plentiful enough for them to buy in enough quantities to ship to the needy nations of the world.

Are they still able to buy as much rice as they were able to in the past? Given that a lot of rice-producing nations are now limiting exports now that even their own citizens are in trouble, unable to acquire as much rice as they once were able to now that rice is being rationed by the government.

I must wonder the position of this website.

Serphet. Walking like a zombie, experiencing painful headaches, and for some reason strangely content.
Expecting rain.

Hmm, I've tried it before. The words were almost too easy and I got bored, but I donated a few 1,000 grains.

That site seems rather f'ed up. I mean that literally as in very sick and twisted.

This organization has food they can donate to starving children. And what do they decide to do with it? Turn it into a game. I mean, people's lives are at stake here, people are starving, yet they turn it into a huge game.

Instead of giving the rice they have to the starving people, they decide to turn it into a game where based on if you get the word right, they donate the rice. Otherwise, if you fail, they just sit back and let the starving people starve to death.

How about they just donate all the rice they have? Why play games with people's lives like this? Don't they see how rather messed up that is? I mean, it sounds like a good idea. A good idea for the people playing it. I mean, the people playing the game have good intentions. However, if you look at the organization doing this, you really have to think... why the hell are they holding back food just to make some internet game for people to play? For what? Site revenue? I mean what kind of sick, twisted tactic is that? They could donate all the rice they have, but nooo. let's turn it into a word game and leave it all up to people on the internet to decide the fate of people starving in this world.

i thought so too, and i think they donate all the rice they have already, but made the site just to raise awareness. i mean, "answer the word correctly and donate rice to starving people!!!" sounds a lot better/interesting than "answer the word correctly and be aware of starving people!!!" but this is just a little theory of mine, i have no proof.

You don't understand, they don't have the rice already. It's in the FAQ actually:

"If FreeRice has the rice to give, why not give it all away right now?

FreeRice is not sitting on a pile of rice―you are earning it 20 grains at a time. Here is how it works. When you play the game, sponsor banners appear on the bottom of your screen. The money generated by these banners is then used to buy the rice. So by playing, you generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people."

Don't call me "hun," dammit stressed
The words start out easy, but you go up in levels, 1000 is easy....over time they get harder and harder and harder.....

That site rocks,
you feel so helpfull with all those bags of rice stacked up on the side

well, the whole point is that they are raising money to buy food for starving people, so maybe they are buying different grain-ish foods (like flour, or pasta,...)

coexist... peace....no war....romanticism (just keep it in mind)
I allot a few minutes everyday to "donate" rice. Hehe. I'm also helping my vocabulary too. It's a win - win situation. ninja

Nothing is true. All is permitted.
