The only reason why doctors would feel underpaid is because there's nothing left in their paychecks after they pay all their insurances.

And low residency pay.
And debt.
And Obama.
Why would doctors have to pay Obama? confused

Saying doctors should get paid more because they "save lives" is stupid. I would bet dollar bills that your average Paramedic saves more lives than any doctor ever will. Should they get paid millions for this?

Paramedics keep you alive so you can be saved by a doctor. They don't practice real medicine, they just keep you stable.

That is weird, I wonder why they call it the Life Saving Crew then. I'm fairly certain that I saved more lives in one semester of Clinicals than my family physician has in the last five years. I am well aware that doctor's pay is because of their high educational requirements, and my initial response was to someone who claimed that doctors should get paid more solely because they save lives. Firefighters, and some SWAT members save lives. Should they be paid as much as a Doctor? No. That's just non-sense. So is implying that Paramedics don't save lives.

My brother gets nothing for saving lives.
It's so sad. Good thing he's gonna finish his residency.
He's 32.

Congrats to your bro.
What type of doctor is he?

Well, he was an internist but decided to change his residency to cardiology during his last year, so he had to start all over again. He's in his third year now.

Cool.
Hearts and brains are body parts I want limited interaction with.
I would never want to be a neurosurgeon.

He wanted to become a neurosurgeon at first, but then he decided that cardiology was his thing.

I don't think that doctors are underpaid.
I think it's the whole insurance part that takes away a chunk of their salary that's the problem, and that is something the regular patient can't help.
Though I'm surprised that it takes so long to become a doctor where you're at.
I just looked up the university in my country, and it takes about 6-8 years to become a doctor+specialist.
I could be wrong, but that what is written on the brochure of the school.

And debt eats at salary.

You don't need to be pre med and have a residency?

Undergrad: 4
Med: 4
Residency/Fellowship: 6-8

Total: 14-16 years.

I want to be a surgeon so my residency is longer.
I would assume 6-8 years is just the pre med/med school.

I've looked up on a site (and a forum) on med school, the brochure of the university, and it gives about 12 years of college (depends of what you specialize in):
3 years of bachelor
3/4 years of master, which may or may not include residency (2 extra years of you have to do your residency separately of your masters)
6 years of specialization (depends on how well you work in the field).

...I don't think it's the doctors that pay into that. Or, at least it's not just them it's all tax payers o.o

Might as well just say "taxes" which might be higher for a doctor.. I don't know.

Paramedics certainly play a role in saving lives.
Family physicians save lives too. Preventive medicine, diagnosing and curing illness.
I agree with you that doctors shouldn't be paid more solely because they save lives.

I can't picture myself doing anything else for the rest of my life.

Obamacare is funded by taxpayers and is changing the whole practice of medicine, including how doctors will be compensated for their work.
