Welcome to Gaia! ::

Just wondering what other ladies do...

Last year for my birthday, my ex bought me an expensive dress. I either threw away or packed up the majority of the stuff he'd gotten me over the years, but I'm tempted to keep using this one...

The problem is that I'm starting a new relationship with another guy, and I feel guilty keeping this dress, wearing it maybe, and knowing that it came from the last one.

Dresses don't usually fit me, and never ever as beautifully as this one does, and its a unique style so I doubt I'll ever find a similar one to replace it... otherwise I'd just get a different dress and be done with it.

Do you guys think I should just donate it, or is it really that bad of a thing to keep using it?
I kept everything that was nice from my last relationships. Keep the item but disconnect the emotional feeling behind when it was given to you and I don't see a problem with it.
If you like it, keep it. Whats the problem exactly?

Definitely keep it! You like the dress, not the fact that your ex gave it to you.

I guess I just don't want the new guy to ask me where I got it. He would; he actually likes shopping. And then I have to say, "Um, well..." I don't really want to lie to him.

That's true, thanks for that!
If there's bitter feelings towards your ex, then you might want to get rid of it.
If not, then keep it.

Pfft, I gave away my "engagement ring" to a friend.

You don't have to. Say it was a gift and you don't know where they got it from.

You're a ******** head case.

"That dress looks good on you, where did you get it?"

"It was a gift from an old friend of mine"

"who;s your friend?"

"well, we used to date but it didn't work out"

"BY THE GODS WOMAN, YOU HAD RELATIONS WITH OTHER PEOPLE!"

"sorry yeah"

"I AM ACTING LIKE AN OVER REACTING CHILD IN WHICH THIS RELATIONSHIP WILL NOT WORK OUT EITHER"

"guess so"

"******** YOU!"

"no, seriously. ******** you. grow up"

yeah so.. what is the problem exactly?

if you like the dress, then keep it. if you still have an inch of morality in your fibers, you'll throw it away. we humans tend to value objects rather than things that build character. if you wanna grow, i suggest you toss it out with the rest of the garbage.

How will I grow if I throw it out?

I wouldn't be keeping it because I still have an emotional attachment. I don't hate the last guy, and I'll always care about what happens to him, but I know its over and I don't want to go back. I'll be keeping it for the single reason that I'm freaking tiny and dresses never fit me, but this one does...

I suppose I could always rip the seams and try to make a pattern from it...

This is what happens if you don't get DIAMONDS.
If I like a gift an ex has gotten me, I keep it. I'm not going to throw away a perfectly good item because, "omgzzzz! ex gave it to meee".
