Do you have a cultural veto?

Not too often, but every once and awhile I get my dander up about something 0.46938775510204 46.9% [ 23 ]
Nope, if so many other people like it, I should watch it. That way I can keep up with the times 0 0.0% [ 0 ]

Have you ever seen a preview for a movie, and thought "Wow, that looks like total crap" only to find that a few weeks later that it's so incredibly popular that you can't go anywhere without hearing how amazing it is, and with all the incessant quoting, references, and the odd youtube music video, it's become something of a cultural icon?

And have you ever found that even after all this, you still have no desire to see it? In fact, even with all the fan fare, you out and out refuse to give it your attention?

This, my fine fellow, is an example of a Cultural Veto. Something that has swayed the hearts and minds of many, while you sit on the side lines saying "Nay! Nay! For the love of god NAY!"

So, the discussion, what are some of your Cultural Vetos? Be it movie, book, music, fad, or craze. What's something that you want no part of, no matter how popular it may be? Did you have a specific reason, or was it a "just because" thing?

American Idol. I have never seen even a part of that show besides small clips that they played on different shows.

Twilight.

Oh god yes. That one I refuse to even read the summary just because the fans are so aggressive. But the snippets of what I've heard have only reinforced that notion.

That and vampires are over-romanticized leeches anyway.

I think I read one chapter from the middle of New Moon or Eclipse or whatever. I then figured out it was a ridiculously melodramatic, angsty, unhealthy "dream relationship' and realized I should have known that from the description anyhow.

YYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1!!1111!!!!!
Kira Yamuchiro: Probably for the best, considering how much time and money people can waste on the game.

xRaistlinxMajerex: I was curious, and still remain naively optimistic, but the fact that there are "aliens" in this movie makes me think it won't turn out as well as I would hope.

Aita Vanth: Agreed. If I want to hear people mangle songs, I'll go to a karaoke bar. That way, good or bad, at least there's food.

persephonester: I gave in to this one.

maronne de blays: I'm surprised you got that far. I've overheard overzealous fans talking about it, and that right there sealed the deal for me as a "no go"
A few of my cultural vetos

Movie: Napoleon Dynamite: The previews just didn't appeal to me, and the constant quoting did not help.

Toy: Tickle Me Elmo: Yes, I was young enough when they came out that it was still a possibility. Too much money for too little toy.

TV Series: Sex and The City: Just.... no thank you.

Book: Really any popular vampire series. You've read one, you've read them all.

I have a cultural veto against High School Musical. I hate the fanbase for it, and how my little cousins and some of my immature friends obsess over it like it's the new Grease. Personally, I don't see it holding a candle to the classic.

Juno.

I SECOND THAT MOTION.

Especially the heinous soundtrack.

I also really, really hate Fall Out Boy D=

I only read it for the sake of completion and to find out what the hype was about. I will say vampires are Cliche nowadays, but if you want something good, pick up Drakula. It's the only decent one out there.
Most of the popular movies from the past decade. Any fantasy novels about vampires. X-Box and the Halo series. Emo bands that want to be punk rock but fail miserably. American Idol (and reality TV in general).
