Welcome to Gaia! ::

I dont have a** burgers but try and get me to talk to ANYONE that I've met once or even strangers. I cant start a conversation easily, it's embarrassing when I want to make new friends.

Even my best friends and my partner, sometimes I just go quiet and...drift off. I even walk either ahead or far behind the crowd when out.

Oh wow. I should tell my friends on my guild. Two of them have 'a** burgers' (their analogy, I find it rather amusing)

Good luck here.

Thank you!
LOL, a person I know who has Asperger's is very talented at art and they made their own t-shirt saying "I have" and then a picture of a naked butt in a hamburger bun! xp They love to see the confused faces on people...hey, it's a great conversation starter!

That's just stupid and it isn't talented either.

Hey, it makes them happy and they really don't care if others think it's stupid.

Welcome to the thread, please do contribute something other than you think something is stupid, I'd like to hear it.

Fair point, fair point.
EDIT: How did I come into this thread and forget that my best friends through elementary both had Asperger's? That was kind of stupid.

People with Asperger's on Gaia? A social website?

I like to think of the slight humor involved.

I have Aspie's, and believe me, it's a lot easier for us to be sociable through keys than with words and eye contact. We are not all a bunch of anti-social freaks who curl up in the dark, away from everyone. Although there may be some like that, I am not one of them.

I am with you on that! People in real life get the impression I am retarded because I have such issues communicating offline.

It's so much less...taxing to communicate online.

I think the internet is a godsend for many people on the autism spectrum. We can look up as much as we want about our interests, no matter how obscure it is; and we don't have to deal with the awkwardness of non-verbal communication. smile

The internet is non verbal communication, though. And besides, couldn't you just use an encyclopedia?

Not exactly, it isn't. Nonverbal communication encompasses things like tone of voice, body language and facial expressions. If you can't look someone in the face and you don't understand what different tones of voice signify, physically talking to others can be hard. I know you're trying to be clever and superior, but really, this is basic communications material. I suggest behaving a little better before you're hung out to dry again.

I would like to ask any of you if you ever had dating problems because of this, and if their certain things i should watch more care fully or something, i care about him a lot but he gets nervous when i ask him about it sweatdrop

I'm bouncy, bubbly and lovely on the net, but in RL? *shudder*
I actually suspect my brother has autism of aspergers, he has a few of the symptoms and is getting to the age where it can be diagnosed.
He already has nystigmus (sp?) which means his eyes flicker and he has trouble focusing. He does a cute head-tilt that is his way of focusing. He's 2.

No, that was me trying to actually contribute. I wasn't sure if you meant physical cues.

I know what Asperger's is, and I know that not all have extreme social issues and can't communicate with others very well.
I just find the irony of the stereotype a bit funny.

Anyways, my cousin has some pretty bad Asperger's. He likes to draw a lot. He gets great ideas for the pictures, but sometimes the drawing isn't too well done. Better than most, yes. But... Whenever he asks me for a critique of what I think, I can't really bring myself to say any negative stuff. (stuff that would help him, yet be semi insulting. I don't want to hurt his feelings. Constructive criticism)
I usually just say a few compliments, and point out something that, "Hey, Logan, you can add a little yellow here in the window to give a cooler shading." Or along those lines.

He gets a little troublesome and frustrating at times to work with, but he's generally a nice guy.

True, I should clarify. I mean things like eye contact and body language.

Also, some Aspies have very obscure interests that may not be covered in except a brief paragraph in an encyclopedia as well as not having tons of books out about them. For instance, a lady in my GRASP group has an interest in all types of light bulbs. She enjoys going on the internet to read reviews of lights, see new designs, look at science articles about energy use, etc.

It seems odd to some, but it doesn't hurt anybody and she enjoys it.

Yeah, and I guess books on lightbulbs could be kind of tedious to sift through.
No, it's not really that odd. I spend half my time reading about random psychological conditions.

My local HOSA chapter hosts a ton of stuff for the Autism foundation. We're pretty good at it too.
Autism as a disease is terrible, but it's great if you want to rally people around a cause. Can't wait for April, we're going to try and do a walk to raise some money for donations.

My old job collected money for Autism, with the puzzle pieces?
But not many people donated since they think any store who collects donations is a scam sweatdrop

^_^ On the first page a nice lady from a guild I'm in mentioned she is married to an Aspie, I bet she has something to contribute!

Me, personally, my boyfriend also has Asperger's. I have a problem with being touched so we agree that I just say so. It does seem like to me it's more common among the girls with Asperger's to have issues with that.

I'd say an important thing is to say what you mean and mean what you say. And be direct! If something is bugging you, don't say "fine" unless you are fine. Otherwise you might think he's being a jerk and he's thinking there's nothing wrong because you just said you were fine. Most people with Asperger's I know do care about others' feelings, we just have a hard time figuring out what they are in the first place!

They probably don't donate because of the nature of Aspergers. I mean, cancer is cancer and starvation in Africa is starvation in Africa, but people might not consider Asperger's quite as high-mandate.
