I have to answer this calculus question but I don't really understand what they are asking of me. Here is the question:

Calculate f^(18 ) (x) for the function f(x)=4^(x). It may help to first determine a pattern. Show work.

I have never before seen f have a power before x, so I'm not sure what I need to find. Any ideas?

I would, but my teacher refuses to help at all with questions from our assignments because they are actually worth marks. Unfortunately, I can find no other questions that have anything even close to similar to this question, not even online. The textbook also does not mention anything about this type of question.
I also can't ask classmates because I'm the only person in the entire school taking the course. There have only been three people in the past two years to take it. sad

I'm not in Calculus yet, well, Pre-Cal, but I've seen this before.
It means that you're going to put 4 to the x(th) power.
For example, whatever x is, say it's... 3. So it'd be (4)(4)(4) = 64.
Perhaps you plug them in together.
(f^1 cool (4^x) Kinda reminds me of log. Say it was log18 = 4.
but hey, don't ask me. I'm on a freshmen not even talking Cal. gonk

JUST SAYIN
that probably didn't even make sense.

I think that actually did help. . . I'm going to look over a few more things and see if I can piece it together. I really appreciate the response. :3

Good luck! And I hope you get a clearer and more assertive response than mine. sweatdrop

You put 18 in where x is. F(x) problems are just plugging in the problem where x is.

This is why i dont plan on taking Calculus.

Usually that is correct. But the number isn't where the x is in F(x). This time it is saying F to the power of 18 (x).

This is why I prefer statistics, lol.

I haven't seen that before, either... where f is given value prior to x. I've gone over it, and I'm missing a variable to complete, which I think is the problem.

The only thing I can suggest is, if you don't get any help here and/or are still unable to figure it for yourself, maybe ask around between your friends, or family members. They may not have taken this particular course before, but perhaps at least one of them has taken Calculus before, and can help you figure it out.

Good luck. n u n

Eh, haven't done much calculus, but if

f(x) = 4^x

then f(f(x)) (which is what I think f^2 (x) is) would be

4^(4^x) = 4^4^x...

continued it should lead to

4^4^4 (a serie of a total of 18 four here) ^x

This will end up being a pretty high number but you can cut it down some by replacements

Edit: The parenthesis matter like crazy here.

So they'd be like

4^(4^(4^(4^(4^x)))) etc

Oh! I get it now!
Thanks to everyone for all the help. I really appreciated it!

Hit the nail on the head, it means it's an iterated function.

f^n(x)=f(f(f(f(...f(x)...)))) over n iterations of the function
