S_T_E_P_H_E_L_L_S, you will find that 99% of your friends are worring more about themselves than they are of what you will do in life. Also, unless you live in a tiny town, most people scatter like roaches after high school. They aren't worried about what you will decide to do with your life. They will ask what you are up to and see if they can get something out of ya like free tickets or a good discount. That one 1% of your friends though who love and care about you will help you with all the things you are interested in and will be there for you. Those are the people you keep close because they are sincere.

From the sound of it it seems you have a bit of time before you have to live in the adult world. You do what you love. You don't always have to stay on the beaten path. Seek out famous poets and write to them. Get tips, read their books and life stories. Check with embassy's about artist exchanges. Get a scholarship to study overseas for a couple of months to meet other poets like yourself. The sky isn't the limit though You limit yourself being scared of what people may think, say or do. You have a purpose. Make a plan and go for it. While you blaze your own trail of glory let them wonder about why their lives are so boring and dull (---its because they worried about pulling others down instead of lifting them ownselves up to bigger and better things!!).
