Welcome to Gaia! ::

I hung out with goth kids in high school. They got mad when I fondled a girl over her clothes, albiet rather intensely, in public. Some social deviants.

You will be laughed out of pre-med if you show up in goth attire. Unfortunantly, being in the medical career means you have to follow the 'norm', if you will. There is a different attitude in medicine - it's respected, it's higher class, it's a lot of work. When most people see goths, they think of burn outs, drug users, people who don't take their lives seriously.

I wanted my tongue ring, snake bites, and tattos, but I made the decision to go into medicine as well, and I knew if I wanted a job and to be picked for a med school candidate, I had to go without them.

sad

I see what you mean.
I was kinda figuring I would have to be WAY conservative. (I never dressed HEAVILY goth anyway but wanted to try it sad )

To be completely Honest medicine wasn't my idea in the first place, it was my dad's sad

It depends on how you do it. I was never really goth with dyed-black hair and multiple piercings. My hair is still it's natural color, I have multiple earrings and a nose ring, a few small tattoos, but that's it. The way I do it is pretty subtle: mostly-black wardrobe with a few red and purple pieces. keep your clothes classy and elegant, like button-up shirts and such.

Take a style and make it your own. You could easily adjust it to look professional as long as you don't do any permanent modifications, like tattoos that would be visible while wearing a t-shirt. Piercings could be removed, but don't overdo it.

I am a little concerned though that you are pursuing something that requires this level of dedication because your father wants you to do it. What do you want?
My former psychologist was/is goth. It showed in just how he moved, and what he chose to talk to me about. When he found out I am goth, too, we had such a good time. He was like, 36, but he still dressed full goth when not at work and didn't give a crap what people thought.

You just have to dress normal at work, but you don't have to give a crap what people think after and before work. Maybe don't advertise it if you're like, a pediatrician.

Goth is a lifestyle, sure, but so is your career. You have to find a balance.

Look at TV. There's that lady on NCIS (I think?). She's goth. No one gives a crap, and the audience thinks she's cool. Maybe there's more acceptance for us than we think.

(For me, I am lucky because I am a writer who writes about horror things, so me being goth is actually a plus for my...image? hehe)

Goth is a fashion/lifestyle, and yes you can still be it in college. And yes professors can even take you seriously if you look "abnormal." My english professor didn't even bat an eye when I started wearing my wigs to classes, most of them are pink. My sociology professor giggled and went on to refer to me as The Spy and asked "Who's the alias today?" To get respect you have to be respectful, so don't be a douche in class and work hard on your assignments plus participation and your professors won't care how you look. However, don't expect the whole world to play by respect standards fairly. Dusty pink hair in a modest style isn't wild, but I am assuming something 'goth' is a little more on a loud side, if you will.

Get "normal clothes" and be prepared to wear them and act like how people want you to act during professional hours. You can do as you please when you're on your own time, but for things like job interviews, professor meetings, strict/high up classes, you'll more likely than not have to play to their standards.

Plenty of people can find a happy medium with this, and it shouldn't be hard to incorporate goth attire into normal clothing, though I'm not sure what your idea of personal goth attire counts as. For something big like medicine, piercings wouldn't be frowned upon, but I imagine too many facial piercings or stretchings would be frowned upon, as would black makeup.

But kid, you're not even 18, chillax. Even if you do go into medicine, first two years of college are usually bullshit anyway, there are people who will walk around campus in pajamas and flip flops and not give a ********. Enjoy it c:

Ya my hair is almost black anyway (and if if it werent I'm not big on dying my hair)
And there is no way I'm getting and tattoos or tons of piercings (though I do not frown upon the people that do)
And ya sounds like a good idea, just recently been working on it, And I'm finding more ways to mix dark and professional (then as other people on here mentioned I can always goth out after school)

I don't even know anymore. I used to have tons of GREAT ideas for what I wanted to do. But my dad has been pressing the medical stuff so far and hard that I don't even know anymore (I've even out front told him I have no intrest in that stuff)

Corp goth exists you know? I wish I could say that it doesnt matter what you wear or look like just how you do, but its wrong. COllege it a bit fine because will it is college and as long as you can be professional and learn how to drift a bit that way you are fine. But in the job market you have to make sacrifices, which can be annoying. THere is always ways to be 'you' while being forced into that box though.

There's more than one style of gothic fashion. Here is a link to a page that has links to a bunch of different goth styles.

As others have pointed out, CorpGoth does exist - corporate goth fashion, that is.

Yes, it might make things a bit more difficult, and there will be times when you have to tone it down for jobs and stuff, but no - you can be a Goth forever. Look up some pictures of Whitby Goth Weekend, there's loads of people who are like 40+ there, absolutely covered in black and red and lace etc. Also, if you're going to be a part of something, Goth's one of the more fashionable ones anyway razz

I say you can still be goth while studying med. But it will be hard for you to actually get a job if you continue to have that fashion style.

I'm studying Graphic Design so I don't have to really care about how I look. I can look like a hobo and people will still take me seriously in what I want to work.

But at the same time, I am going to be studying Education after I am done with my BA in Graphic Design. So I will actually have to dress a bit more conservative. Which really isn't that big of a deal.

You can still dress how you want outside of work and school...

biggrin Great cause I REALLY don't wanna quit....

Like I said I like it because it's ME, NOTHING else I've ever tried before felt right

So what can I say Goth is me smile
I'm pretty sure that NO ONE CARES how you dress at university. If you're going into medicine, just dress tidily and appropriately for the situation, even if you're decked out in black.

Of course you can.
The only thing is you may have to adapt to a different style for the work place if that's a requirement that's asked of you.

But one thing I want point out that could get you knocked on is, referring to other people as "normal" just because they aren't goth. That just sort of makes you look like you're still going through the teen snowflake phase and think yourself uniquely different then everyone else.

You should check out some of voltaire's books on goth.. Some of them are pretty light heart ed but he also does a pretty good job of showing people that is possible to live that life style as an adult.
Lol, still classifying yourself after highschool rofl

Seriously who cares if you want to wear all black but going around saying "I'M A GOTH!" is the dumbest s**t ever.

Yes, you can go to college as a goth.. It's just difficult to get a job with the goth fashion/style.
I've known several goths that graduated college sticking to their high school fashion sense. One of them I know already has a well-paying job as a fashion designer.

I think this is a very big and important point. You need to learn to dress yourself. I know some people who are college or post college, and still dress like they did when they were 16. It does not make them look professional or like someone I would want to have working for me.

That being said, there are all sorts of resources on the web about dressing goth at work, and how to incorporate pieces of your style into your work wear.

It's also worth mentioning after high school labels like "goth" don't really matter much.

I don't go around telling people I'm goth, the ONLY reason I did here was cause I had a question I needed mature answers to
