They've been talking about the Cascadia fault for years. If it goes it will be about a 5 min quake that will streatch from central California all the way up through BC and even hit some of the islands off Alaska.

You can kiss your a** goodbye if Mt Ranier, Mt Baker, and Mt Hood decide to blow soon after.

It isn't contected to Yellowstone, so that should be unaffected by it.

I think they predicted that it would be about a 9.1 with massive aftershocks. So basically the same as Japan (although I believe the type of quake will be different).

Worst California will get is about 7.8-8.0. It will NEVER get to a 9.1 for California. My college had a presentation on the Japan quake two weeks ago, and two geology professors mentioned that California wouldn't even have earthquakes as strong as Japan's.

That may be true for the San Andreas fault line. The Cascadia one is a bit different the last time it slipped it caused an 8.7. It's more due to the massive size of the fault line. In reality esitmates of it's size will change constantly. Everything I've heard from the UW says that they are expecting an earthquake magnatude similar to Japans when the Cascadia fault finally slips.

When it does it wont effect a large part of California. However the resulting Tsunami will.

Also, remember that one of the last ones that hit California (the one that destroyed a double bridge there) did an up and down motion rather than the side-by-side which was completely unexpected and not at all predicted.
So just because some Geologists do not think that anything major or that anything could happen, does not mean that it won't. It all depends on what the earth itself does in conjunction to what is happening to it and how it is slipping.

I need to know something.

What kind of fault is the Cascadia one? If it's a strike-slip fault like the San Andreas, a tsunami is highly unlikely. But if it's the thrust kind of fault like Japan has...

very true, pretty sure thats the news report i seen, about the geologist explains the earth quake to expect, he was talking about the "ring of fire"

this is actually the news report i was watching, if you care to see it that is .. buahaha.

Fox News is mostly bullshit. I wouldn't trust them for anything. That said, Newsweek also ran a similar story (though with a different scientist), which was absolutely false and abysmal journalism besides.

This isn't the article I was reading originally, but it talks about why this is simply not true.

Yes the Cascadia is the same type as the one that caused everything in Japan. Cascadia fault

The fault is made from two plates, the Juan de Fuca and the Pacific plates, crashing together and going under the North American plate. It has created some interesting Mountains to say the least.
There's actually a 2% chance of that happening in the next 30 years, at least.
It would probably have to be worse then a 9.1 for it to happen. I read an article posted by yahoo
of a geologist that sad that. Don't believe these people who say every 200 years California gets
a big earthquake. They can't trace it back that far to actually know it.
Japan is in what's called the ring of fire, a dangerous place to leave via very active plates. It's like
living in the tornado valley in the US and saying I never accepted a tornado like people do all the time.

2% chance you say?

Geologist literally say, that it is ultimately unpredictable ..
so i honestly dont know what to believe.

Actually they can trace back that far, and much much farther xD I was watching a show last night and they said people had tracked back 73000 years and further about weather and earthquakes and volcanoes and stuff going off. And I live in the ring of fire (washington state) but I wouldn't expect a large scale earthquake here because we havent had any in years =)

Though I live next to Mt Rainer and apparently it should have errupted a while ago. That is very scary *_*

Actually ... I think most of the American news outlets have been freaking out quite a bit. My issue with Fox is that they have an extremely conservative tilt. But that's unrelated ...

The logo at the bottom left on the video you linked was from Fox. That's why I figured you'd watched it on Fox. Though I can see how several different stations might carry the same story.
I really hopes this never happens.

There are fault lines in many places, including the 14th Street Fault (which extends from New York City). The best thing anyone can do, since you never really know for sure, (some warnings are months in advance and never happen, others are, well...) is to be prepared, like the old Scouting motto. In other words, know what you should do, in case a quake hits, but other than that, don't worry about it. If you're prepared, then you really have nothing to worry about, right?

I mean, an emergency kit of sorts. Bandages, bottled water, non-perishable food. I remember reading that, for quakes, standing in a doorway was one good thing, because the supports on a door frame were better able to withstand quakes. Still, reading up on it, and what to do in case a quake hits, wouldn't hurt anyone.
