Max walked down the old concrete road, his duster and his hat on his head. He slung his bow over his back and walked. His combat boots scraped the ground with reach step. He was dressed in his blue jeans and cut off tee shirt. He had a Viking longsword at his hip and a katana on the other. The colt revolver on his hip[ was his grandfathers and he could split the wings from a fly's back with it. His hat pulled low over his head and walked.
Avery thrust her dagger into her left boot and grabbed her cross bow with its quiver full of arrows. She'd watched her brother, her only remaining family get snatched away by the militia. She was all that was left and she wouldn't let it stay that way. The raven haired young woman walked, her boots made no noise as they hit the concrete. shoved water and what was left of their food into her leather shoulder bag and ran down the street. Her father before he was taken by the militia years ago only to have his head sent back a week later had told her to go to California, the slinky man bar and find her uncle, who would help her. This was only weeks before they came for Ryan.
She didn't let tears come, she shook them away angrily. "Hey!" a firm voice shouted at her back. Green eyes whirled searching and she found two militia hurrying towards her. Guns still holstered she turned on the balls of her feet and took off running. They cut her off and she had time to load the bow with an arrow but no time to aim before they were on her again. Knocking her down onto her back and forcing the bow from her hands. Avery reached up her hands braced on his chest "Let. Me. Go! You arrogant b*****d!" she spat.
Max heard a cry from up the road and understood that someone was in trouble. He poured the speed on and ran to the voice. It was a young woman and she was going to be raped. He snarled and drew his long sword. He bared his teeth and kicked the man on top of her in the face. HE pulled his pistol and shot him in his balls. "Why don't you get your kicks from me?" He smiled pleasantly and killed the man. He walked over to the other guy and listened as his dieing screams cut off by a single stroke of his sword. Max sheathed his sword and walked back to the woman. He picked up her scattered belongings. He placed them near her and pulled her to her feet. "Are you okay miss?" He asked, becoming the southern gentleman that he was raised to be.
What happened next was a blur to her. She watched this new mysterious man save her. She fixed her clothes shaking the shock from her face. She nodded "Yes, Im fine thank you" she said with a nod. Katherine stood and rubbed the dirt from her pants "Thank you for the help but, I must get going, I need to go and find my uncle" she said as she turned and stooped to pick up her cross bow and put the bow back into its quiver with the others before she gave him a nod of thanks and appreciation and then turned her back to him walking on.
Max stood there. He had no where to go and absolutely nothing to do. "No offense, ma'am. But in my mind you shouldn't be traveling these parts alone. Would you mind an escort? And believe you me, Miss, unless my eyes are liars, you defiantly need some protecting." HE smiled his southern smile. "And on top of that its getting dark. My camp is just a stones throw over there." He jerked his thumb over his shoulder into the woods.
Avery looked at him. She was debating on staying with this complete stranger. She sighed "I don't need protecting, they caught me off guard and I wasn't ready" she said defensively. She shook her head "No thank you, I need to keep going, the more I sleep the less time Im spending getting to Cali to get my uncle" she spoke stubbornly. He reminded her it was going to get dark and she shook her head at his offer 'No thank you, you're very kind but, Im not tired and no offense but, I dont quite trust you. You may have saved me but, I don't know you, if you'll excuse me I need to be going" she said before she turned and began to walk again.
Max shrugged and walked back to camp. "I'm going to mess with her here later," HE laughed and loaded up his rebuilt steam car. He shoveled hot coals into the firebox and rolled out onto the road. The quiet huffing and hissing got a little louder as he mashed the accelerator and he sped up to 50 miles an hour. He slowed down as he came up along side the woman from earlier. "Excuse me Miss, but you look like you have one helluva walk ahead of you and you're sore now. Why don't you take the air conditioned seat." He pointed to the MG60 -A1 behind him on the bed of the steam car. "And I trust you to NOT shoot me with my own gun." HE smiled his most charming smile and offered her his hand to help her into bed.
Avery walked on, her feet were beginning to hurt. She loaded an arrow into the bow and walked with it pointed to the ground because she wasn't going to be caught off guard again. She wasn't a helpless child anymore. She heard a weird noise, like a steam train only less noisy. She glanced over her shoulder her bow ready and then seeing him she groaned as he pulled up beside her. "I think I can manage it" she said stubbornly. As he continued to talk she sighed and let him help her in "im not doing this to please you, Im just tired of walking now" she said stubbornly.
Max smiled and pulled her into the bed of the steam car. "And you get the windy chair," HE said showing her how to operate the machine gun. "And now we head west." He stomped on the accelerator and started rolling. "I'm Max by the way." He rounded a bend in the road and crossed a bridge.
She let herself be pulled into the steam car and nodded. She smiled, it was a nice gun, they used to have one in the village, atleast that's what her father said, she'd never got to shoot it so she never knew if it really worked. Avery nodded "Avery, pleasure to meet you, just drop me at the state line, I can walk from there" she said with a casual shrug.
He puttered around another bend. "I'm headed that way myself. I have to meet my Cousin in Las Vegas. He has a ranch out there and hes gathering up people. He not militia so don't worry." He slid a cooler full of sodas back to her. "Take you one." He looked back to the road.
Avery would have preferred walking alone. She had trouble trusting people. She sighed "Alright, Thanks.... I guess" she said softly. It wasnt until he slid the cooler of soda's to her did she realize she was thirsty. She gulped "Uh, thanks" she said as she grabbed a coke and nudged it back to him with the front of her boots.
Max grabbed a Mello Yellow from the cooler and closed it. Popping the top and taking a swig, he hit a switch on the floor with his toe, turning on an old mobile record player. The sweet strums of Mettalica's "fade to black" Filled the air around them. He was constantly scanning the woods around them for deer and other wild life.
Avery lounged casually. She had downed half the can of Coke in one swig. Licking her lips she let out a soft "ahh". She watched him scan "Just drive, if there's anything worth shooting I'll catch it and shoot it for you" she said over the dull roar of the steam engine. She sat back scanning the way her father taught her and her little brother. She missed him more now, not having to plan left her more time to think about her brother, her mom and her father.
