Pokemon Trainers

Name: Leon Makaran
Age: 17
Height: 5'7"
Favorite Pokemon: Jolteon

Leon has spent the past ten years training for the Nuzlocke Challenge; a dangerous competition where people of all ages compete for their first Pokemon. The Challenge is a deadly battle of skill and wit, where the penalty for failure is death. Of those who participate, only about 25% come out alive, an even smaller 10% actually walk away with the Pokemon they fight for. The 15% who survive almost always to do by accident or because the Pokemon they chose was killed in the battle. Leon has trained hard and studied up on where within the battle grounds his chosen Pokemon resides, and is determined to be apart of the 10% who leave the arena ready for their new life as a Pokemon Trainer.

She tossed her hair up into a messy bun so that it wouldn't be in the way during the challenge. Like many other trainers she had arrived at the Nuzlocke area the night before with the assistance of safe transport provided to those who wanted a chance at getting thier first Pokemon and becoming Pokemon trainers. Despite the odds she was determined to come out of the Nuzlocke Challenge alive and with her first Pokemon.

As she reached the outer edge of the area she could see at least two dozen potential rivals standing around ranging from sixteen, like herself, to twenty and some were even older than that. Some were talking amongst each other. Each and every one of them convinced that they were going to emerge from the Nuzlocke challenge victorious despite the odds being against seventy-five percent of them even making it out alive. Of the twenty-five percent who do make it out alive less than half actually have thier first Pokemon and the chance at starting their journey as a trainer. Cara knew the odds were against her but with hard work and a little luck she was certain she would make it out with that slim few who were able to start their journey. If she couldn't, she had already made a conscience decision to die trying. The only thing she refused to do was come out alive and empty handed.

Cara found a tree and leaned agaisnt it, propping one foot against the trunk behind her and keeping one planted firmly on the ground. Her arms crossed in front of her as she watched the people waiting for the chance to enter the area and start. The professor, Professor Joken, typically liked to say a few words welcoming each of them to the Nuzlocke Challenge and wishing them all good luck. At least that is what her brother had told her after he had successfully completed the challenge a few years earlier.

A shrill ringing sound filled the small apartment as the alarm clock beside his bed went off. Groaning in irritation he swatted the clock with his hand, sending it flying across the room to land on the floor, still ringing. Being more or less awake now, he sat up in bed and glared at the device on the floor as the ringing action made it spin slightly. Throwing off his covers, he kicked his feet over the side of the bed and glanced over to the calender. Blinking lightly at it his eyes suddenly widened and he grinned before jumping to his feet and getting dressed as quickly as he could. Today was the day he would be getting his very own Pokemon!

Racing out of the house, he ran towards the arena which was just outside of town and grinned as he saw the gathering of potential Trainers. Glancing down at his watch he grinned as he realized he was right on time. He could still turn in his application and get his specially made capture rope before the professor started the Challenge.

As he walked towards the sign in booth, he looked around, trying to see if he could pin-point the trainers that he would be seeing again. He wasn't at all worried about himself, since he had done his research to the point of even knowing where in the Enclosure the Pokemon he wanted would be. He knew it's strengths and weaknesses, and he knew all of it's possible evolution's. He was ready for this. Signing in and getting his rope he was patted down like everyone else had been to ensure that the only thing he had on him was the rope he'd been given. Once that was finished he moved to join the crowd as they moved towards the raised podium, all of them anxiously awaiting the Professor's speech.

He blinked lightly as he stepped outside of his lab to the sight of a few dozen prospective trainers gathering near the gates to the Nuzlocke Enclosure. He had always hated the way people willingly threw their lives away for something as petty as recieveing a Pokemon. But it was a great honor in this day and age. With the Pokemon of the world becoming more and more dangerous, it was becoming a neccessity to have a pokemon of your own if you wanted to travel to various cities. Unless of course you could afford to purchase tickets on the safe transport vessels.

Sighing heavily he didn't even bother to straighten his disheveled hair and attire, nor did he change his labcoat which was stained in places. Walking up onto the raised podium he stuck his hands into his pockets, waiting for silence from the gathered trainees. Once they were quiet he nodded lightly.

"Welcome, everyone to the Nuzlocke Challenge." he announced loud enough for everyone to hear him. "I hope you've all been training very hard for this day, as it will be the only thing that saves your life. I also hope that you have all read and understood the contents of your Nuzloke Trainers Guide and are ready to face the challenge that lies ahead. I shouldn't need to go over the rules again, but because I know the vast majority of you won't make it out alive, we'll go over them again. No weapons, No stealing, No capturing adult Pokemon! If you can manage to do so you may capture one of the adolescent Pokemon, though I highly recommend not trying it. So. Now that we've gone over everything else. Please locate the colored tags attached to your rope! Each of the five gates into Nuzlocke has one of those color's posted above it. When you enter this main gate, you are to follow the fenced in perimeter to the gate of your color. We have done this to keep you separated and to hopefully cause less casualties. Good luck to all of you. May the gods have mercy on your souls..." he added the last part in a softer tone before stepping down off the podium as his assistants opened the main gate.

Cara listened to professor Joken's speech. It was short and too the point which she liked. She was glad that it didin't take forever and that it didn't try and persuade potential trainers to not go into the Nuzlocke Enclosure. For many of them, including herself, there was nothing that could change their minds. She had already recieved her rope and as the Professor told them to look at the colored tags because that was where they were to head once inside the main gates. She glanced at hers with a smile. Red. Cara took it as a sign of which Pokemon she was supposed to go after. She had been undecided up until this point, stuck between two but with this she was certain which to choose. Although, it would be much more dangerous than the other choice she was up for the challenge.

As soon as the main gates had opened people began to file in. Some were even pushing and shoving. She waited for the initial haste to die down before heading in with those in back. She wasn't in a hurry because she knew how the challenge was going to end no matter what. Patience was the key, in her opinion. Once inside the main gates she looked around. The feild really was incredible once inside and she took a moment to look around before headed off to the side in search of the red gate. Upon finding it she entered into the enclosure where she was seperated from many of the other hopeful trainers. In the distance she saw another trainer disappear into a group of trees. Cara knew she wasn't alone in this arena and Pokemon and hopeful trainers alike were dangerous and to be watched.

One step at a time she walked looking around the arena where she was. Thinking as she walked trying to remember where it was that her Pokemon would be located in the arena. It wasn't but a few more steps and she remembered heading off into that general direction, cautiously. As she walked she spotted some pokemon and did her best to stray from their path. Not wanting to waste any energy fending off their attacks. Cara knew she would need all the energy and luck she could get once she got to her chosen Pokemon.

Leon listened to the professor's words carefully, his body trembling lightly in anticipation. From the information he had gathered over the past year he would need to find his way to the blue gate before heading in search of his Pokemon. Looking down at the rope in his hand he sighed, Yellow. He would have to circle the entire park in order to get to where the blue gate was, but he didn't let himself get discouraged.

He moved with the flow of the crowd, not trying to push or shove like most of the others as they all filed into the main gate and split off towards their gates. Finding the yellow gate, he passed through it and stared in awe at the magnificence of the enclosure. it was absolutely breathtaking what they had built, but knowing that something as gorgeous as this could house such dangerous creatures, kept him on his toes.

He moved through the underbrush as quietly as he could, keeping close to the fence as he worked his way towards the blue gate. It took him a while to find it, but once he did, he headed straight forward from the gate entrance towards where his chosen Pokemon resided. It didn't take him long to find their location and he crouched down in the shadows of the tree line, watching as five of the fox like Eevee's rolled around in the dust and sand near the base of the mountain.

It didn't seem to take long to walk through the enclosure and soon she came to a man made lake within. A smile crossed her lips just around the lake and a tiny bit further and she would be there. The lake was home to the water Pokemon Squirtle and its evolved forms in the arena. Cara neared the lake and spotted a squirtle not to far from her. They really were a cute Pokemon in her opinion. Not one she wanted at this point in time or ever, but cute nonetheless. Avoiding the Squirtle she started to walk around the lake. Not wanting to be near the water as much as she could help it.

Almost around the bulk of the lake she noticed something odd in ahead of her. Two Wartortle were huddled together, which wouldn't have looked odd except there was something orange she could barely see amongst them. She knew what it was even before approaching the group, cautious but quick. She doubted it was a good sign when Wartortle were gathering around a fire Pokemon. She heard the Charmander cry out from the center of the Wartortle circle and she shook her head.

Thinking quickly she turned the rope she had with her into a make shift lasso and prepared to use it. Laying out just a bit of bait as near to the group as she dared to venture she moved off away from it. Finding a small rock she tossed it at the trio but they didn't take notice to it. Grumbling under her breath she found another rock slightly bigger and tossed it again at the trio this time accidently hitting one of them in the head with it. She took a step back as it turned around to see what had attacked it. Stepping back had done no good and within seconds the Wartortle was advancing on her. She took another couple of steps back as the turtle Pokemon got closer to her. At the moment she thought was the best she was going to get she tossed the rope successfully getting it over the Wartortle's head and around it's midsection, pulling on the other end she tightened the loop around the turtle Pokemon and pulling it tight causing the Wartortle to fall forward, she tied it around the tree she had been stepping towards. She watched for a couple seconds as the creature tried to escape but pulling against it only made it tighter.

She wasn't entirely sure what it had said but after a couple moments she found her lucky chance as the second Wartortle went to aid the first. She had been expecting to lure the second one away from the little fire Pokemon as well but was greatful she didn't have to. Taking the break she spared no time in rushing to the Charmander that had been trapped by the two water Pokemon and as carefully as she could, avoiding its tail, she picked it up and headed into the thin treeline. The Pokemon that she was now carrying didn't make it easy for her as it squirmed and struggled to get out of her grasp, managing to scratch her several times. Once she felt she was a safe distance away from the lake she stopped and put the little fire Pokemon down. Taking some of what was left of the bait she offered it to the Pokemon by setting it on the ground which the Charmander promptly ate.

Overhead she heard the roar of a Charizard and she instantly knew that it had to be the parent of the Pokemon she now had with her. It must have heard it cry out while still with the Wartortle. The Charmander went to respond but Cara moved quickly to try and hush the creature causing her to be bit in the process. That; however, was something she was willing to live with if she didn't have to face the Charizard that was a little too close for comfort. She had left her rope with the Wartortle's and was nearly out of bait too. She tried to keep the Charmander both quiet and occupied while she thought of how to go about dealing with the surely aggressive parent.

Leon watched the Eevee for a long while, trying to decide which one he wanted most before a fierce angered roar echoed over the enclosure. Someone had pissed off a Charizard on the other side of the grounds. The Eevee released angered cries of their own before tripping over one another as they retreated to their den.

Leon muttered a curse as the Eevee ran from sight and grabbed a handful of bait from his pocket tossing it onto the ground in front of their den, and fixed his rope into a lasso. Laying the loop of rope out around the food he retreated back into the trees to wait. The Charizard's roars died down and soon the Eevee came out of hiding to discover the bait. They sniffed it for a moment before eating it hesitantly.

He watched them carefully before finding the one he wanted. He waited until it was right within the loop before pulling it managing to catch the startled Eevee around the neck. The Pokemon yelped and struggled against the rope as Leon jumped out of the bushes towards the captured Pokemon. The moment he came into sight three of the Eevee jumped at him, while the other larger one attacked the one he'd captured, shaking it furiously. He had been watching them all well enough to know that the one he wanted was most likely the runt judging from the way the others had been knocking it around. But it had always gotten back up. Fighting off the three that were attacking him he ran towards the Eevee he had captured grabbing hold of the larger one and forcing it to let go before grabbing the injured Pokemon in his arms and running for it.

He knew the blue gate wasn't far from him and despite the bites and scratches he was taking from all four of the remaining Eevee's he ran for the gate. As he neared the gate, two of the professor's assistants were standing inside the enclosure, each holding a can of repellent in their hands. The moment Leon came into view they began to spray the area, forming a thick cloud of the nasty smelling spray to chase off the attacking Eevee.

Safe within the inner circle of the enclosure Leon collapsed against the fence, looking down at the Pokemon he held. The Eevee hissed and growled in his hold, biting on his arm weakly. "Don't worry." he grinned brightly to it. "You're mine now."

Cara stood up and walked a few steps towards the nearest gate then she turned back towards the Charmander that seemed uncertain. She offered it some more of the bait but refused to walk any closer to it. After a few moments of contemplating whether it was safe or not the Charamander walked towards to her to get it. She slowly took steps backwards as it got closer. When it reached her she let it have the bait. While it ate she repeated the process of walking away from it. Once it had finished it walked towards her and she once again stepped away from it slowly until it caught her. Cara repeated the process over and over until the two of them had made it out into the initial clearing before the gate to the outer area. Despite having ran out of food the Charmander seemed to follow her until they were nearly out of the area.

As Cara reached the gate one of Professor Joken's assistant's opened the gate and stepped through prepared to stop any Pokemon that weren't supposed to pass through if necassary. As far as Cara could tell they wouldn't be necassary. As soon as the Charamander saw the assistant the Charmander stopped. Cara shook her head and told the assistant to go back out of sight. Cara didn't think that the Pokemon trusted her but rather just wanted more of the food she had been offering. Kneeing down on her knees she tried to coax the Pokemon to her. After a few minutes she finally got it to come to her. She had held out her hand like she had a treat held within even though she had none left and as soon as the Charmander got close enough to grab she picked it up being careful of its tail. The Charmander squirmed it her arms as she walked through the gate. She heard the door shut behind her as the assistant shut it.

"Fiesty aren't you?" she smiled as she held up the Pokemon and took a good look, "That's okay though." Cara was pleased with her first Pokemon and glad that she had decided on Charmander. The assistant congratulated her and informed her that they had to go to the on site Pokemon Center to check the Pokemon's health and possible injuries as well as her own. She nodded and followed the assistant.

She carried the Charmander, that had finally stoped wriggling in her arms, and stroked its head as they walked towards the center. She was curious to how many had failed to get their first Pokemon this year. Knowing she would find out soon enough she was more eager to know who had succeded. She was eager to know who would possible freinds or "rivals". Once they entered the center she took the Charmander to the counter and handed it to the Nurse who was waiting. She made a comment but Cara hadn't quite caught it as the first stings of her own wounds occupied her own thoughts. Without the adrenaline from the enclosure she was beginning to feel the pain. Another assistant tried to escort her to another room to clean up her own wounds but she refused to leave the side of the Charmander she had just gotten. The assistant warned against it but didn't force her.

The nurse checked the Pokemon at the front counter. "Charmander... male...lively... healthy..." Cara heard the nurse muse among other things as she looked every inch of the Pokemon over. "Looks like you have a good Pokemon here Miss. If you will please wait in the waiting area Professor Joken will be in after all participants of this years Nuzlocke Challenge have been accounted for to make have a final word to this years trainers and to give you each the things you will need for your journey."

Cara picked up the Charmander and did as she was told. She found a spot on the floor to sit and set the Charmander down next to her. The nurse had given her a treat for the Pokemon and Cara gave a small portion of it to Charmander. AThe assistant came back and offered Cara some warm wet clothsto clean up with which Cara accepted. As she got busy cleaning her wounds she was careful to watch Charmander. She didn't see any other trainers in the waiting area yet but that didn't mean much. They could still be on their way or in the back being treated.

The wounds stung as she cleaned them but she didn't let it show. They could have been much worse. In fact, she had expected worse and considered herself lucky for the condition that she got out of the challenge in. The feeling of being lucky only increased as several assistants rushed in carrying a body on a stretcher. With the speed at which they were moving she assumed that it was still alive, for the time being. She looked back to the Charmander, who was still busy eating, and patted its head.
