So what if you can see the darkest side of me,
No one will ever change this animal I have become!
Help me believe it's not the real me,
Somebody help me tame this animal I have become!
Animal I Have Become by Three Days Grace

→•____ There was that smile again, the very same one that had previously turned her insides to mush. This time though, her reaction was to smile back, returning the beaming smile with her own cheerful one. Although these actions did nothing to calm the rising butterflies in her stomach, at least they helped her remain composed on the outside. God, would she have been embarrassed if she’d been caught with that silly pout spread across her features.
When he answered she merely nodded in agreement and released a faint laugh. Of course the institute was different. Hell, she would have been surprised if he would have answered with anything even hinting at normal. After finishing her small bout of laughter, she turned her attention back to him, listening as he continued on about his roommate. Storm had told her that he’d be sharing a room with Bobby, so that came as no surprise. If anything, Tristin should be very happy and consider himself lucky, he could have ended up with someone not nearly as relaxed and lighthearted after all. “That’s great! He’s a relaxed guy and pretty easy to get along with, so I’m sure you’ll like him.” She stated, adding her own little thumbs-up as a sign of approval. Well, at least now she knew she had an excuse to come down this way if she ever needed one. All she’d have to do is ask Marie for a little help. “Aw, you’ll be fine. It might take a few days, but eventually everyone will warm up to you and it’ll be like you’ve known them for years.”
Urging her body forward, she lifted her hands and trailed her fingers them along the edge of the bed frame until she reached a single bed post, raising them and gently placing them in her lap as she took a seat on the edge of the mattress. Silently she examined the room, noting that the only difference between her room and his was size, but that was understandable. After all, she had two roommates while he only had one. She was snapped out of her examination when she heard Tristin speak up, obviously addressing her with his question. For a moment she mulled it over, a look of thought crossing her features as she decided just how much of her past she wanted to tell him. When she finally spoke her cheerful smile dulled, a look of content quickly replacing it. “I’ve been here for five years, give or take a few months.” She replied, her words laced with just the slightest bit of hesitation. “I won’t bore you with the details though.”
Raising a hand, she nervously ran it through her thick russet locks, slowly twirling the ends between her fingertips. Her early years were something she just didn’t handle well in conversation, even being as outgoing as she is. It made her self-conscious, afraid of what people might think if they learned about the things she’d done in the past and what they might do in response. Sure, at the institute she had nothing to fear, but it still made her quite uncomfortable.
She almost got down on her knees to praise whoever was looking out for her when Tristin changed to conversation to his new clothing. Smiling again, she pushed herself up and off of the bed, striding over to the dresser and plucking out one of the neon T-shirts. “Honestly, I’m jealous!” She exclaimed, an amused grin crossing her features as a lighthearted laugh escaped her lungs. “I’m going to have to talk to Marie about this, I’m mad she didn’t pick me up any.” Her lips curled into a pout and she attempted to pull of her best whine, although the corners of her mouth and the cheerful gleam in her eyes gave her away.
As she refolded the shirt and replaced it in the dresser she heard the bell ring, inwardly grinning. She’d been excused from classes today thanks to Tristin and the wonderful mission to save him from the streets of California, something she’d happily due again and again if it meant skipping her Chemistry and Botany classes. Turning back towards Tristin, she was just about to open her mouth to explain the school schedule, but was interrupted by three of her closest friends. Bobby, Marie, and Jubilee burst through the door and quickly made their presences known, a joyful smile returning to Alexa’s lips. Quickly, as if on queue, she leaped forward and wrapped her arms around the resident firecracker and southern belle, an uncharacteristic girlish squeal leaving her lips. “Jubes! Rougey!” She squealed, her joy suddenly reaching new heights for today. Alexa had gone the whole day without her partners in crime, thus she couldn’t help but be a little overjoyed to finally see them. Jubilee and Marie quickly returned the hug with a squealed, “Lexi!” before letting the petite female go and continuing with their greetings.
While Bobby, Rouge, and Tristin discussed his new clothing and exchanged thanks yous, Alexa turned and shot Jubilee a wicked grin. The teenage firecracker merely returned it, knowing the exact meaning behind it. There was a new guy in the mansion and he was available. The two didn’t even need to exchange words, the grin speaking volumes. Ever since they’d become friends, guys was something they always seemed to either have the same taste in or competed over. Often times the two would end up in massive verbal fights over the stupidest things, although in the end they’d make up and things would return back to normal.
After Jubilee introduced herself, she passed Lexi a knowing wink, something the feral mutant picked up on right away. So, that was it. Game on. The wink was practically a green light for their race to begin. Inwardly, she huffed and growled at the teenage girl before her, obviously upset with the presentation of this challenge. Although outwardly, her face betrayed no inward emotion, her expression shifting back to a content smile. She couldn’t have been happier when Bobby mentioned going downstairs and getting something to eat, the corners of her mouth rising up into a lighthearted grin. “After you.” She stated, motioning for the boys to go on ahead. Jubilee, Marie, and herself needed to have a little talk.
And talk they did. The moment the boys were headed downstairs the trio turned towards each other and began to speak in soft whispers. “So, that new guy…” Jubilee started, an impish smirk playing across her lips. Her statement was quickly cut off by Alexa though, who glared back, “Hands off Jubes, I’ve got first dibs.” She stated, her words masking a loose threat. Sure the two often appeared to get violent or aggressive, but they’d never truly hurt one another. Not on purpose anyways. Marie simple giggled at the two, rolling her eyes. “I swear, every time someone new comes along you two get into the same exact fight. Would ya’ll give it a rest?” The other two turned towards the taller female and practically sent daggers her way, heated glares followed up by a faint hiss. “No!” The whispered simultaneously, afterwards turning to face one another again. “Jubes, seriously, you had first dibs on the last one. It’s only fair.” Alexa stated, her eyes locking with the other girl’s eyes to emphasize her point. Mulling it over, Jubilee took a minute to process the statement, coming to a conclusion in a matter of seconds. “Fine. But, if things don’t work out…” She didn’t even need to finish her sentence, simply shooting another heated glare Alexa’s way.
When they reached the kitchen the trio split, each grabbing a plate and piling it with a variety of meats, fruits, and vegetables. After filling their plates, they then made their way over to a large table in the dining room, one with seating for eight. Rouge pulled up a chair and made sure to save the one beside her for Bobby, placing her silverware there as a temporary place-saver. Meanwhile, Jubilee and Alexa took up opposite seats at the table, making sure to leave open seats on either side of them.
Just after sitting down though, Alexa realized she’d forgotten a drink, mentally smacking herself for being so silly. Quickly standing up, she made her way back over to the kitchen and grabbed a glass. But, much to her shock, she grabbed the glass a bit too quickly and dropped it on the floor, sending bits of glass in every direction within a three foot radius. Within seconds, a sharp pain in her lower right leg made itself known, the brunette instinctively bending down to inspect. After rolling up her sweatpants her eyes landed on a rather deep gash, blood leaking freely from the wound and staying her exposed skin. "Damnit..." She cursed, obviously frustrated. How could she have been so stupid? She should have gripped the glass better, or at least taken her time.

As the group descended the stairs and made their way into the kitchen, Bobby lead Tristin away from the girls and towards a group of about five boys.
