Alexandra Evelynn Chase held the phone to her ear, numb with horror. She was momentarily unable to reply to the person on the other line. Everything in her life suddenly changed. The only comprehendible thought in her head was that she needed to get into her car, and drive like hell. The problem was that she could not move. A worried voiced buzzed down the line, and Ally blinked away her frozen state. "I'll be there as soon as possible." She said, and ignored the voice that told her not to be so rash. The voice was her mothers. Ally's father had been diagnosed with cancer recently, but it was not the type that could be cured quickly, or would ever go away. No, it was permament and he was only given a short life expectancy. That had been last month, now he was in an unstable condition in the hospital.

Ally lived in a little bungalow, making it easier for her to dash between rooms and pack. Darting into her bedroom, she grabbed a big bag, filling it with clothes and necessities. Once she had dressed herself, and filled the bag quickly, she looked in the mirror quickly, and was once again frozen, but this time with shock. Her auburn hair was falling in natural waves just past her shoulders, her blue eyes huge and round in her worryingly pale face. It was only at that moment that she realised she was crying. Ally, the girl who never cried, had silent tears rolling down her cheeks in a heavy flow. Shaking her head, she briskly wiped away the tears, and dragged her bag out to her car. Dumping it in the back seat, she ran back into her house, pulling on the closest shoes she could find, while grabbing a few other pairs in case she needed them. Which was lucky, because the pair she had pulled onto her feet happened to be a pair of high heels which would not last her too long. Slamming her front door, locking it, Ally clicked over to the drivers seat in her heels and began to drive like a maniac.

Calm down, calm down.... Ally thought to herself, once again feeling tears on her cheeks. Her speed never wavered, she kept her foot down on the accelerator, realising just how far she was going to be driving. A few hours into the journey, and she had calmed herself down. She could think more rationally, and had control over which routes she was taking. The girl also had control over her speed, which had been reaching over one hundred miles per hour. Reaching a road that lead through the middle of nowhere, Ally felt a sort of stuttering somewhere in the car, and scowled, slowing and pulling her car to the side of the road, to a stop. Stepping out of her car, she walked round to the hood of the car, pulled it up, and peered inside, only to step away coughing as black smoke rose from the engine. "Son of a b***h!" She shouted, seeing that she was in the middle of nowhere, with no way to get anywhere.

Leaving the hood of the car up to let the smoke out, Ally walked over to the side ofthe road, and sat down on the grass verge, putting her head in her hands. It was only now, she realised, that she had been too rash with her decision. If only she had waited to think things out and make an adult and clear choice. A memory of her most recent relationship floated into her mind and she sighed. It was a memory of her and Luke. They had broken up a few months ago, and that was when Ally had used most of her money to buy her own home. The break up had been a messy, and dfinately not delicate one. She hated even thinking about it, since she was still mad at him, but had not seen him since. Or if she had, she'd ducked behind counters and run across streets to avoid him. It was a month after the break up that she had lost her job, and was doing small jobs here and there but nothing permanent, leaving her without much money. This was the reason she had not jumped onto a plane, and had to drive hundreds of miles to the hospital where her father was.

Pushing the thought away, she looked up and down the road. She decided she would wait a little while before beginning to walk to a highway. Looking down at her phone, she noticed that there was not even a tiny bar of signal, unable to call for a taxi. I'm such an idiot. She thought to herself and remained sitting, but brought her knees up to her chest and rested her head on her legs. Sitting with her eyes closed, Ally simply sat enjoying the heat.

Until half an hour passed, and she began to feel restless. Standing up, Ally brushed loose dirt off her jeans, and began pacing up and down the road, a few metres each way. Her heels clicked as she did so. The only reason Ally really wore them was because she was so short. For being a twenty-two year old, she was awfully small, at five-foot-two. She was also rather pale for a girl who lived in such a warm place, but her skin never seemed to pick up the tan. Seeing a car, her blue eyes widened, and she clicked into the middle of the road, zipping her hoodie up. Waving her arms in the air, she didn't realise who she was flagging down until the driver was closer. A feeling of dread swept through her. But how could it be him? Taking in a gasp of air, the dread did not cease at all. It was definitely him. It was Luke.

Some people call life a present that you should cherish everyday,
and that your everyday present is being present. Some people say
that life has no meaning, and we are just here to please the greater
good and all that. People will agree and disagree on everything
under the sun, but on this day, Lucas knew that it wasn't just the
choices that were made which brought him to the current situation,
it was the parts that made a whole.

It had started exactly four months and six days ago, after Luke and
his girlfriend Ally had broken up. He had left the house they had
been sharing to go out, cool off, and maybe have a beer, knowing
that this was probably another one of their stupid fights. They were
fighting a lot now-a-days. Soon, they would be better, though; Happy
and a couple, living in a house they had bought together. That had
all changed when he had gotten home some hours later to find that
Ally was gone. Most of her stuff was probably with her-more of the
important stuff; clothes and shoes and such-but there were still things
that she had never come back to collect; a few CD's-though those were
probably worthless to her- a book or two, a bottle of perfume. All these
had been constant reminders that Luke had shoved in a box and thrown
into the back of the closet.

And after that, he no longer saw Ally. The town wasn't that big, but it
wasn't small either. You could go a good week without seeing the
same person, but it was usually impossible to avoid someone for more
time than that, unless you knew their schedule. Of course, Ally had
known Luke's schedule to a tee. Everyday, he went to work, a cashier
at one of the markets in town. From there, he always had lunch across
the street from the market, at a little diner. Sometimes Ally would have
slipped away from her job and at with him. He would go back to work,
finish up the day an head home. That had hardly varied after the break-up,
although, at night, he usually went on a snack run to a gas station.

A few weeks later, that was when it had happened. Luke had been at
the gas station on his nightly snack run, sipping on a soda while
waiting in line behind a woman and her child who keep running around,
and an older guy who seemed impatient. There was an old television
sitting on the counter for when business was slow. advertising some
lottery winner. He watched the entire commercial, but, unfortunately
didn't have any money to buy a ticket. That's when fate intervened. It
ran into him and sent his soda flying all over the man in front of him,
and the floor. After the initial confusion and yelling, the lady paid for
her gas and food, took her child by the arm, and shoved a twenty into
Luke's hand. He tried to tell her it was to much, but she had gone out
the door before he had even started to talk.

Luke stepped up to the counter, with a crisp twenty to buy a ticket,
which was something that Luke hadn't done since he was 18.
Eventually, he left it in his coat pocket, before realizing that he indeed
had won the lottery. He ended up winning the five million dollar-which
was three million, after taxes. But what the hell did he care about taxes?
He had just won the lottery. After that, Luke had quit his job, wanting
to do something he had only dared to dream of since his childhood with
his money. He wanted to take a countrywide tour of America, with no
return date, no plan, just a car, a few changes of clothes, his phone,
and a pillow.

Luke was grudgingly awoken at five-thirty in the morning by a rather
annoying beeping sound on the day he was going to leave for his
all-American road trip. He rolled out of bed and onto the floor while
trying to turn off his alarm.
"Jesus..." Luke used the bed to help him
off the floor, and stretched himself. Stepping out of the shower, Luke
dried his hair, and then dug around in his drawers. He found a nice
white shirt with a blueish collar and pocket. Blue jeans followed, before
some old worn red shoes that usually accompanied Luke everyday.

Breakfast was followed by getting into the car and stopping at the gas
station in which Luke had won his fortune. With enough money to fill
up the car, Luke smiled to himself, before starting the drive into the
wonderful world.
Left? Right? Left. And he was on his way as the sun
started to brighten up this new day. The new day. A day, where
anything could happen.

He had been driving for more than an hour when someone had come
out the the middle of the road. It certainly wasn't safe, but Luke
was able to stop in plenty of time. And then he really looked at the
girl, noting the blue eyes. Some blue eyes that he probably would
never forget in a million years, especially not in the bright sunshine.

"Alexandra?"

Ally stood frozen where she was, still unable to process the fact that Luke was slowing his car to a stop right in front of her. How on earth was she meant to react to this? Did she go off her head, yelling at him and causing an argument like she usually did? Did she calmly explain that she did not need his help? Or did she ask him if he could give her a ride to the nearest town? Her mind was shuffling through each question at a very slow pace, causing her to just look at him with wide eyes when he asked if it was her. Staring at him, it was hard not to notice that he was attractive. They hadn't spoken in a while now, and now she didn't seem to want to shout or scream at him. It was strange.

"Luke...?" Was all she managed to say, before mentally shaking herself, and stopped staring at him like he was the only boy she'd ever seen. Managing a small smile, she rubbed her forehead for a second. "Heyy, what are you doing out here?" She asked, curious as to why he was out here, since it was quite a way away from their hometown. She glanced once back at her car, to see the hood was still sitting up, showing a clear view of the little amount of smoke still seeping out of the engine.

"So.... where are you headed?" She asked, looking away from his eyes, since she didn't want him to get any idea of just how upset she felt. Running a hand through her hair, she then added, "How have you been?" It was only now that she realised she didn't have to give him hostile glares and avoid any contact with him. They could talk, they were both grown ups, weren't they? But she was still a little sore about their break up. It was then that she decided that she would try to avoid telling him about her father. There was no reason to give him a chance to hurt her more. No, she decided and watched him once again with curious blue eyes.

After stopping his car on the side of the road, everything
seemed to happen in slow motion. The clouds drifting by,
the very little breeze there was blew the grass, and time
itself all seemed to end up one way; slow. And suddenly,
he didn't know anything. He didn't know what he was doing
out here, how he was looking at her, or how to speak. He
forgot it all in a moment's notice, because seeing her out
here in the middle of nowhere after weeks and weeks of
nothing, it was an extreme surprise. One that he reacted
poorly too.

His first thought was,
Well, long time no see, isn't that right
Ally?
but that hardly seemed appropriate to say at a time
like this. His next thought came because, of course, what
happens when a pretty boy sees a pretty girl?
She looks
really good, besides, you know, being trapped on the side
of the road in the middle of nowhere, and looking a bit
stressed.

Somewhere in the deep recesses of his mind, Luke knew
that Ally had said something, but it had barely reached his
subconscious, let alone his conscious.
"Hm... Oh, um... I..."
And his ability to talk had been waived. Well, that's great.
That's a great way to respond to a question. You're
making this weirder than it has to be. Ugh. She knows you,
knows your confident, and she'll know that something is up.

He mentally kicked himself for that one, but she didn't seem
to notice because she went on with her question process.

"I'm just, you know, driving. But I could ask you the same
question... Anyway, I've been good.
" He answered all her
questions, but avoided the one that he didn't want to answer,
only because he couldn't.

"Okay, you know, this is a little too awkward, even for us, "
Luke looked at the sky, trying to refrain from looking at Ally
anymore.
"Do you need a ride?" If ever there was a time when
staring at your foot as you rub the earth down was
acceptable, this was it.

I Hate To Break It To You But, You're Just A Lonely Star
I Try To Bring You Down But, Our Level Isn't Good Enough

Ally raised an eyebrow at his half speaking and half stumbling over his words. It was very uncharacteristic of him, but she waved it off as being surprised to see her in the middle of nowhere though. Glancing up at the sky, Ally checked if there was any sign of a random downpour, but it seemed to still be cleark skies and hot temperatures. It somehow reminded her of when she'd lost her job. After their break up, Ally had gone a bit down hill. Being late for work had been a start due to her late night partying to prove to her friends that she was in no way upset about what had happened. So she would be late for work or miss work consistently. When she'd lost her job which had been reasonably well paid, she had to get a job in a shop, that did not pay so well, and this was when money started to become tight for her. Her parents refused to help her at this point, because they wanted her to get her own life on track the best she could.

Blinking away from the sky, she risked a glance at Luke now, and then looked to the ground. "Just.... driving? Sounds fun." She said, shrugging off his answer, thought not quite believing he was just simply driving. "Oh, good." She said in reply to how he had been. She had to admit, this was one of those seriously awkward situation. Seeing him usually made her feel angry, but actually talking to him made her feel strange. It made her feel kind of sad about what had happened to them. As she was watching him now, since he wasn't looking at her, she realised how much she'd missed that beautiful face. They hadn't been the kind of couple who were just couples, they were good friends as well.

This made Ally smile a little bit. "I know... I can't believe it's even come to this." She said, though she was smiling, it wasn't really a happy smile, more of a wistful one. At his question, she bit her lip, unable to decide what to do. So many thoughts were crashing through her mind, making it hard to think. Finally, she met his eyes, and replied, "A ride would be great." She replied, trying to make her voice grateful anf light, when really uncertainty and panic was rushing through her.

Once they were in the car, Ally thought she would try to bring up some conversation, rather than sit in an awkward silence. She had pulled her things out from the smoking car, and dumped them in the backseat of his own car. Of course, there were probably going to be questions of that, but groaning inwardly, she thought she would cross that bridge when she came to it. "You're pretty far from town... are you going somewhere in particular?" She asked, staring out of the front window, then added, "Something business related?" It was a genuine question, but it brought back her own money worries. Scowling at the thought, she tried to forget about money for now.

Luke watched her take a pile of stuff from her sad looking-
car and put it in the back of his much happier looking car,
but didn't ask. He didn't ask why she had everything she
owned in her car, and why she was in the middle of the
boonies, in the hope that the topic of why a certain someone
was also in the certain area as Ally. Maybe they could have
some very light conversation about cool whip and cognitive
dissonance-whatever the hell that was. Ally, though, she had
always been really smart, and while Luke had been smart as
well, Ally was closer to genius smart that Luke would ever be.

Of course, that hope didn't even last until the car started.
He cringed inwardly, hoping for awkward, and getting the
opposite of that.
Okay, let's see, excuses, excuses. THINK.
Good, god, what the hell is wrong with you Lucas? Um...
answer the question she asked.
"No, I'm just driving." He
almost sighed out of relief out loud after that on.
Atta boy,
Luke. Confident.

Luke would usually keep his eyes on the road while he was
driving, but due to the lack of cars on this fine day, he would
glance over at Ally every once in a while. However content
she seemed to see herself as, he could tell that under her
exterior, something huge-or multiple smaller somethings-
were troubling her. He'd known her for too long, seen the
mask before. By now, he had memorized the mask, and
could always tell it was her underneath.
I wish I could ask
what was wrong. Not that I could make it better, but still.
We're friends first, broken-up second, right?

"So where were you heading? Before you were so rudely
interrupted by a smoking engine and other dysfunctional car
parts?
" He glanced at her again.

I Hate To Break It To You But, You're Just A Lonely Star

As Ally tried to cover up the best of her emotions, she found it rather hard around Luke. Though not impossible, what worried her though was that he knew her more than anyone else out there, and he may be able to see right through her. I just have to lie. Luke does not need to know about my life, and i do not need to know about his. She thought, beginning to regret getting into his car.

Nodding with a smile, Ally somehow again did not believe he was 'just driving'. It was the way he had said it. Something was not right. "Fair enough." She lied, though her voice sounded light. Or at least she thought it sounded light and not at all suspicious. Watching him out of the corner of her eye, she could tell he was thinking about something, but ended up shrugging off any questions that came to mind. For being someone who often liked to know what was going on, Ally could be very lazy.

Ally could feel her muscles tense as he asked questions. A shiver of indecisive feeling waved through her, and she wasn't sure what to say. "I'm on a business trip. Just driving across to Colorado." She said, deciding to take the easiest lie. Okay, so she had no business whatsoever in Colorado, hell, she had no business at all, but how would Luke know that? "I know it's a long journey, but i figured i had some time to kill. Until my car actually died." She babbled, and realised how long it would take to get to Colorado from California, having to drive through both Nevada and Utah.

This was strange, it was all very strange. Usually he could
get a rise out of her, either him saying something really stupid,
or making her laugh. He thought that the 'dysfunctional car
parts' thing would get her going, or at least wind her up, but
now nothing. Ally was calm, relaxed, light. Fluffy, even, which
was something to say, because when Luke had done
something in the past, fluffy was not the word to describe
the situation.

'Okay, what's going on here? Then again, is it really my place
to pry? I don't think so. She's been really chill with my 'just
driving,' but I think she can tell that I'm lying. We were always
good at that, if nothing else. Always could tell when something
was up.
' At this point, Luke was hardly paying attention.
Everything seemed to fly by now, in the outside world, anyway,
and nothing really picked up in his brain until he hear the words
'Colorado' and 'trip.'
"Colorado is a hell of a long ways away.
Well, you probably knew that anyway.
" 'At least it makes sense
now. The bag. Right?
'

It wasn't so much that Luke panicked, than that he started to think
better of himself.
'What ulterior motive do I really have? I mean,
I didn't do the 'I will stop, and keep my eyes straight forward, call
a garage and then stay in my car with the radio on really loud 'til
they come, and then I'm gone,' thing, but that hardly makes me
qualified to talk about feelings and what not. Right? But we are
friends first, so... where's the aspirin?
' Believe it or not, that actually
made sense, in a slight way. Conflicting emotion? Still not good?
And then, another car passed by.
"Hey, at least we aren't the last
people left on the world, right?
"

It did strike Ally that there had not yet been an argument between them. Usually even talking for two minutes led to a full shouting match. They had not always been like that though. There was a time when they could have a conversation without blowing things out of proportion and one of them storming out of the house. She shivered at the thought of what they had become. Ally stole another glance at Luke. He looked really good. Her heart still jumped up being around him, which only made her sigh. It was hard just being in the same car, having to act like everything was okay, and not pour her heart out to him. She was still questioning his motives for driving out this far though.

"Yeah, thought it would be good to take the job, y'know, get away for a week or two." She replied, though she noticed there was a crack in her voice half way through the sentence. Quickly, she cleared her throat, hoping he didn't notice anything odd, hoping he would think she just had a sore throat or something.

"That would be... interesting. But then I guess if we were the last people on earth, we could do whatever we wanted." She said with a thought, if they were the last people on earth.... hell that would be really awkward. Plus, there was the whole recreating their race due to almost extinction. Ally pushed the whole thought out of her head, and she began to think about other things, not good things. Taking a deep breath, Ally tried to calm herself, beginning to feel hysteria build up in her stomach. She felt like she was about to have a panic attack. The things that had happened today suddenly felt like too much. Her father's illness, her car breaking down, being in Luke's car and overall panic.

I'm going to throw up. She thought suddenly. Feeling her chest tighten, she said with urgency, "Luke, pull over, I'm gonna throw up." Once the car stopped, Ally threw the door open, ran a few paces further onto the roadside, and threw up. She had fallen to her knees, and once she felt like she no longer needed to throw up her guts, she sat back, wiping her face on a tissue that happened to be in her pocket. There were tears running from her eyes, not crying tears, just tears from being sick. Looking at Luke with shining eyes, she whispered, "I'm sorry."

He suddenly couldn't think of anything to say, and that left
him with his mouth wide open, staring at her like he was a
fool or something. Everything just went out of his mind and
spilled out onto the ground when he had rounded his car.
The car was heated in the sunlight, and the exterior burned
the hand he had placed on it a few seconds ago. He took
his hand off of the trunk where it had been resting, and
whipped it onto his jeans. Now it was slightly less sweaty,
though the situation was still just as awkward as before.
Luke let out a breath.

He hadn't quite heard what Ally had said, and so for a few
seconds, his feet stayed glued to his spot, wearing shoe
prints size eleven into the dead grass. Then his thoughts
caught up with his brain.
'Crap. She just said something,
huh? Um, sounded kind of like she said sorry, though I
guess she could have said something else. What was
that, like ten seconds ago. Twenty? Half a minute? What
do I say?
' "Hey, at least it isn't in the car. And it isn't your fault.
I've been told many times that I'm a terrible driver, a speed
demon.
" He rubbed the back of his neck where sweat
was starting to form.
'Why is it so hot out here?' " So, what
now?
"

Ally sat on the grass, squinting her eyes at the sun that seemed to be shining directly into her eyes, making her see bright after-images wherever she turned. Shifting away from the vomit, she took a few gulps of the fresh air surrounding her, and glanced at Luke. A part of her wanted to desperately tell him of all her troubles, but her negative and pesimistic side told her that he did not care anymore, that he would not want to know anything about this. Pulling herself to her feet, she walked over next to the car, and leaned against it, feeling very tired. Shaking her head with a sad smile, Ally replied without meeting his eyes, "It's not your driving. There's just some.... stuff going on right now." She said slowly. Then added, "Things haven't exactly been.... never mind." She stopped herself, sighed, and began to pull herself together, trying to build walls around herself, to not let him know how she was feeling, or what she was thinking. Though it was probably a useless process.

Leaning against the car, she saw that they were still in the middle of nowhere. "I'll pay you back for gas... it may take a while since money is kind of-" She broke off. Why was she making all these mistakes? Letting her guard down and saying all these stupid things? She blamed on Luke. It was his fault that she got like this around him, wasn't it? Silly and not able to control her own emotions, or thought process obviously. Getting a grip, she replied, "I guess we hit the road, really, i feel fine now." Though it took her a second to convince herself of this. "So is there a speical someone who welcomes you home these days?" She asked him, curious to find out if he was dating at the moment. Being a girl, it was only a natual question to ask.
