This city never sleeps
I hear the people walk by when it’s late
Sirens bleed through my windowsill
I can’t close my eyes
Don’t control what I’m into
This tower is alive
The lights that blind keep me awake
With my hood up and lace untied
Sleep fills my mind
Don’t control what I’m into

The sky was clouded gray
Rain drops fell upon his face
Seven years he threw away
When he broke his dear love's heart
And it shouldn't end this way...
His foolish heart, it went astray
Was it something he could say that would ever take away her pain?
City lights and traffic sounds
People scurry across the ground
He caught her eye
At the next light
The tears were far too strong to fight.

She's suffered a lot with the absence of her mother, and no matter how much she blames him, deep down she still loves her father. She gets along with only one of her relatives, perhaps because of their mutual loathing of their family members. Soon after Indigo turned 19, the two learned of a 'little' surprise. 9 months later, Indigo birthed their first child, Jackson. Not being one to be irresponsible, Kevin then courted the younger woman, which was fairly easy, since he already had feelings for her. Everywhere her eyes fell were stacks of boxes. The hallway outside the apartment, the doorway, the living room, and every other surface was hidden behind cardboard columns. The drive here had been the worst thing, certainly. Forrest had been irritating the entire 5 hour drive. He griped on the boat shipping their stuff out, he griped in the truck, and he griped while they unloaded the boxes. The entire way was spent placating him, assuring him the trip would be worth the effort, and that moving out was the new start they needed. It was time to flee the nest after all. Ivy had a promising career to start, and Forrest….needed to get off the island. The island needed some time from him, and he needed a change of pace. ”Well…. Maybe we should start with…..uhm..” Her hands found their place on her hips, staring across the mounds of boxes and crates in their main room.

A lot of the furniture had been ordered before they moved out to the new place. Of course, that meant a lot of it had to be assembled, and added to the stacks of boxes cluttering their floor space. ”We should start by ordering take out, right?” It had been a long while since they had both eaten, and she could feel it more and more as she looked through all of the sharpie-labled piles. ”After that we can do one of the bedrooms, and maybe the kitchen. That okay with you?” Air forced its way through her pursed lips, resulting in a high pitched squeaking sound. She was trying to be the strong one in all this, but she wanted nothing more than to call her father and mother and tell them she couldn’t do it. [dolor=darkgray]Just gotta get through the first few weeks…. If it didn’t work out after a few months, they were free to head back home, their parents had said.

Ivy pulled her phone out of her purse and searched for delivery places in the area. ”Well, there’s no shortage of stuff to order…” Back on the island, there had only really been the restaurant in the hotel and the bar, and the hotel only delivered when someone was there and not doing anything else. If it were busy, you were out of luck, and had to run down there yourself. Someone would bring them whatever they wanted right to their door here, and….see the terrible mess they had made of this nice apartment. Great…. ”What do you feel like, hm? World of possibilities out here.” The windows in the living room looked out over a rather busy street. It was the middle of the afternoon, as they had left home early in the morning, so traffic was bustling outside. She was looking forward to seeing all the lights from the cars, and shops glowing at night. Maybe later she’d go walk down to the park and have a cigarette….after she bought some new cigarettes.

Ivy parked it on one of the “living room” labeled boxes, turning her phone to snap a picture of Forrest standing amid the wreckage. She fired off a message to their parents, letting them know they got in safe, and were gonna be unpacking for a while. ”We should do the living room instead of the kitchen. We can order or go out until we get the kitchen set up…but maybe we should get the couches and stuff out of the boxes….Do you think we could pay those guys who helped us unload the truck to come back and build all this s**t? I bet if I called them back I could get one or two of them out here~” A mild snicker curled her lips upward. The moving company had sent people to unload and take back the truck from them after they got all the boxes out. Ivy hadn’t had to lift too much, as every time she started to carry a box to the elevator, someone would come and take it from her. She didn’t mind holding things, but having people dote on her was excellent too~

Another sigh motivated her to stand up, approaching her twin brother from across the room. She wrapped her arms around his body, pulling him into a tight hug. ”We should buy champagne later. And cigarettes. We can smoke and drink up on the roof.” She figured the more busy she kept him, the less likely he was to freak out or get upset. ”You wanna do anything? First night in a new place? You feel okay?”

There was nothing about moving to like. There was packing, transporting boxes, pitiful farewells, and then unpacking it all and supposedly starting a new life. He had spent most of the previous night being awake, no doubt feeling anxious of the big move. He had been to the city a couple of times during family trips back in his youth, and back when his parents insisted that he needed to see a psychologist. Of course, that didn’t last very long. Regardless, a part of him would miss their home. He didn’t have any – if any – friends, but his mother would certainly miss him. It felt like the woman would never let go of them as she kissed their faces a million times. He practically had to pry her off of his body, but he would be lying if he said he wouldn’t miss her, too.

But they were here now, in their new apartment. Tired eyes glanced up and over at his sister as she spoke up. He didn’t really feel like unpacking right now. He didn’t really feel like anything, to be completely honest. The only reason he had agreed to the move was because his sister wanted to go, and wherever she went, he did. The entire ride here he made sure to voice his complaints, and he was sure she was more than tired of it by now. Sitting up straight, he rubbed the back of his neck. ”Takeout sounds good,” he mumbled. A nap also sounded good, but in order to do that, they needed to unpack some things – though he wouldn’t mind sleeping on the floor. ”Bedroom first; that way, we can use it quicker.”

They would need to clean the bathroom, too. A good scrub down would be needed in the tub before either of them showered, and they would need to replace the toilet seat. Lord knows who last lived here and what they did. He stood from the box he sat on, raising his arms into the air and stretching. His back made a popping sound as his bones shifted and he let out a tired groan. ”Chinese food sounds good. It would probably be best if we figure out where the best food is; does your phone have any reviews for the places around here?”

Forrest hadn’t been looking when his sister snapped the photo, too busy counting all the boxes that they will have to go through, and to make sure none of them were missing. It didn’t look like it, but he was sure they would find out when they started to go through things. He nodded, looking back over at her. ”We should do the bathroom, too. I could probably do it while you start on the living room.” He frowned when she mentioned the helpers, and then shook his head. ”No. I don’t like the way they looked at you,” he said, scowling. He recalled their comments, too. Ivy was very beautiful, and he knew that more than anyone, but he wasn’t going to allow anyone to look at her the way he did. ”We’ll be fine doing it ourselves.” Even if it would take forever.

He felt better when she wrapped her arms around him, and he automatically did the same to her. He rested his head against her shoulder, closing his eyes and smiling slightly at her concern. She smelled like home, and it was more comforting then the blank walls of their apartment right now. ”Mm that sounds good,” he said into her ear before pressing his lips against her skin. ”Just the two of us, and the city lights.” He pulled away, but his hands stayed on her thin waist. ”I’m just… tired. Moving took a lot of energy out of me. I’ll be fine,” he said. He raised a hand to her chin, brushing his thumb against her chin gently. ”Did you want to do anything? Is there anyone from your job you have to notify or whatever? Or has mom called?”

He never looked happy. Even standing in the middle of their new home, Forrest was practically glowering. Ivy heaved a sigh as she unbalanced a few boxes, turning them this way and that to check the labels. Everything had been organized meticulously to make this as easy as possible on the both of them. All the bedroom boxes were sealed up with purple tape, and labeled for whichever twin’s bedroom it belonged in. The kitchen was blue, living room was green, and miscellaneous knick-knacks and things were put in boxes held shut with black tape. It had been their father’s idea, truthfully. He knew the stress the whole move was putting on Ivy, and how she’d have to be the chipper one for the both of the twins through the whole trip. The man looked out for her often, and helped her out when he could. If it weren’t for him talking their mother down off the edge, they’d probably still be living at home, cramped up in their house on the island while she doted over them like they were children. The Schwartz family had always been close, but their mother had a hard time letting go. The woman was born to be a matron, practically raising their father, and then their own children. It had been hard for her to say goodbye last night. Ivy was almost certain her arms and back would be bruised from the crushing hugs the woman had squeezed her into.

This was good for them, though, especially Ivy. She was picked up by a modeling agency to do magazine shoots, and other little things. It was a dream come true for her, and it was all happening so fast. All it took was a couple pictures getting noticed from that bumbling authors travel website and brochures. Certainly she never thought Elijah’s work would be read…well, at all, but before they knew it the phone lines at the bar were buzzing, asking questions about the tourism, and the people, and if anyone knew who she was. Ivy’s mother had been cautious at first, ignoring the calls, and feigning innocence to it all. It wasn’t until people started showing up on the island and asking that Ivy was given away. They sent letters, and contract, and negotiators until finally the woman cracked. It was time for her daughter to fly the nest, and find her own way.

Ivy prided herself at never being camera shy. She didn’t think she had bad angles, and she looked good in most colors. People fed her compliments and stroked her ego almost everywhere she went. It was natural for her to leave people gawking in her wake, and she loved it. Forrest didn’t, however. Perhaps that was one of the reasons her mother insisted they both go. Certainly Ivy knew that Forrest wouldn’t let anyone trouble her, at least not while they were together. As long as she was collecting paychecks, though, they’d have enough to live pretty comfortably in the small apartment here, and he wouldn’t have to struggle to find work very quickly. Whatever he wanted to do, there was time, and certainly opportunity.

Forrest piped up finally, answering her questions about food. ”Yeah, I don’t wanna unpack the kitchen stuff and then immediately dirty it. We should buy a filter for the sink, too, before we get into the habit of washing dishes and drinking it. We don’t know how good the water is out here, or the pipes in this building.” She pulled up a notepad on her phone and started making a list of things they’d need. Their parents sent them with a set of dishes and such, but Ivy wanted to buy some new ones. Dish set, light bulbs, faucet filter, new shower heads, floor lamps, bar stools… It was already a pretty extensive list, but the shopping would probably make her feel a little better. She’d end up draining away her signing bonus before she got paid for her first job, but that was no big issue. They’d be fine for a while, and if things got rough they could call home for help once in a while. Their parents made sure they were well prepared for the inevitable torrent of phone calls about home repair and other emergencies. ”Alright. Should we start with my room, or yours? I think I have more boxes, but that stuff doesn’t really need to be all unpacked….” The room she had decided she wanted from the pictures online was a little bigger, and had a big picture window that looked out over the shorter building next door. Their apartment was a little cheaper, because as a corner model, it only had one bathroom, but from that window she could see clear down the busy street that ran past the front of their building, all the way to where it curved around the big park about 10 blocks down. Curtains, you can’t forget curtains…

Forrest stretched his arms up and his spine revolted, popping and cracking back into place. Ivy grimaced as she searched through her phone, looking at restaurants and reviews online. ”Sounds good. Uhm… yeah, there’s stars on these. The closest one only has 3 stars, but there’s a five star one that delivers, and it’s pretty close. Oh, and we can order online, sweet. I hate talking to people on the phone…” Ivy snaked her way through the boxes as she punched in her order, handing the phone over to her brother. ”Get whatever you want. If we have leftovers we can just eat later, too.” Chinese food never filled her up. She’d be going back for more after a few hours of unpacking, anyway. Her usual order was a bunch of steamed dumplings, and a big box of lo mein noodles, which she keyed in dutifully before handing the phone over. ”Should we maybe have them bring some soda or something, too? I don’t think we have anything to drink, aside from the water that was in the front of the truck with us. And I’m pretty sure it’s hot by now….” Driving the moving truck had been….and experience. Ivy was a decent driver, but she hadn’t driven in the city before. The truck had been big, and people hadn’t been very kind about letting her change lanes, or merge into traffic, but they made it in one piece with no incidents. That was all she could have asked for.

Ivy fished through her wallet for some cash, setting it out on the counter for when the buzzer sounded and their food arrived. She had forgotten almost entirely about the bathroom. Their mother had been meticulous about cleaning, always harping on them for tracking dirt in, and keeping their bathroom neat and tidy. ”You’re right. That completely slipped my mind….I’m pretty sure all the cleaning stuff is in a ‘kitchen’ box…it should be labeled, too, with cleaning products or something like that. And if not, we can run out and buy whatever we need for that. There’s plenty of places open late around here.” Back home, the only place that stayed open past 10pm was their mother’s bar, and the hotel lobby. If you needed something from one of the stores, you had to wait until morning, and best hope it wasn’t their day off the next day. Sometimes if you were lucky, you could call the stores whose owners had young children, and they’d deliver on the off days if their kids were around. Otherwise you were out of luck most of the time. While she was daydreaming about home, Forrest’s expression shifted again, his temper flaring up a tick. ”Aw, come on, no need to get so bothered~ There’s nothing wrong with asking for a little help sometimes. I liked the way they looked at me~” Ivy’s biggest fault was her pride, definitely. She depended a lot on everyone around her to feed her ego. She loved noticing people leering, being able to feel their gaze traveling along her body, trailing down her legs and drinking her in. She was toxic to men and women who fell victim to her spell, and she loved it.

She felt his arms close around her as his head perched itself in the crook of her shoulder. He had always been a little taller than her, but that was to be expected. Their mother was tiny, compared to their father at least. He was a giant, having at least 6 or 7 inches on her. Luckily, Ivy grew to a comfortable 2-3 inches above her mom, and Forrest a little more than that. Ivy couldn’t actually recall that if he was taller than their father or not. Forrest slouched a lot, and was more…gaunt, than their father. Mr. Schwartz had been built. He was all muscle from years of carpentry and logging. His shoulders were broad and filled, and his muscles showed through most of his clothing. Ivy followed her father to work often as a child, and even through her teenage years to watch him work, glistening with effort on the hot summer days. She kept a lot of old pictures of her father in boxes, pictures of him at the beach with their mother, or dancing at the bar. Ivy would admit to the jealousy, and maybe the longing if you prodded her enough. She pined after him for most of her teenage years, snuggling her father on the couch to watch movies, always calling him “daddy”. She’d never admit it was a problem….it’d be a problem if she acted on it, certainly. She just assumed she had a thing for men with a lot of muscle, and no one could fault her for that.

Forrest pressed a kiss to the side of her cheek beside her ear before releasing her a little. He kept a firm hold on her waist, tipping her chin up with his thumb. ”I get that. I’m tired too. But the more we do today, the later we can sleep tomorrow. Gotta give to get sometimes~” She teased quietly, adding a wink to her words before calming, another sigh passing through her. ”Uhm….I’ll call in to work in the morning, and let them know we got all settled. That’s no biggie. I sent mom a picture of the place, and the boxes. She knows we’re busy. I think I’m fine, the best we can do is maybe get one of the rooms done, and clear out some of these boxes. I’ll feel better when we’re out of the cardboard jungle.”

”We can do that stuff tomorrow,” he mumbled, rubbing his right eye. He didn’t like shopping. It took forever, and right now they needed a lot of stuff. They had enough money for whatever they would mean, but it would only reflect the need for him to get a job. Being under the care of their parents, neither of the twins ever really needed to work. He didn’t know the first thing about working, nor was he very social to begin with. He probably wouldn’t even get hired, not that he was worried about it. Ivy was promised a high style life to go with her good looks. They need not worry about filling their stomachs – not that she did much of that to begin with. ”We can start with yours. If we don’t finish in time to start mine by tonight, I could sleep on the floor or share your bed with you.” Wouldn’t be the first time. He had always slept better when the two of them shared; perhaps the new apartment will keep him crawling into her bed more often, especially now that they weren’t under the scrutinizing gaze of their parents.

Forrest ran his fingers through his hair lazily. He needed to get a trim, but he was too lazy, and liked his hair a little longer too – more for people to grab. ”Definitely the five star one,” he said, his stomach growling lightly with anticipation. Chinese was a rarity back on the island. Though their little home was a mix of all sorts of races, there wasn’t many spots to eat. Both of them would no doubt gain a bit the first couple of weeks here; much to his sister’s dismay. He let go of his hair when his sister came over, and took the outstretched phone. Glancing at what she ordered, he leaned back and glanced over the menu. What did he even want? Well, white rice, for one, and maybe some eggrolls and those little thin crispy noodle things. After a while, he decided on orange chicken, and punched that in. When he finished that, she spoke of ordering something to drink, and scrolled over to their choices. ”Is ginger ale good, or should I order something else?” he asked, looking over at her. He waited for her reply before acting on it and sending in their order before handing her the phone back.

”It’s alright, I got it,” he said, getting up and heading over to find the box. There were a lot of them, but thankfully, his sister planned ahead and labeled everything. Otherwise, he would probably spend more time looking for everything, than actually cleaning things up. Pulling one of his knives from his pocket, he use it to ease open the tape on one of the kitchen boxes. Pulling open the flaps, he glanced inside, moving it around until he came across what he was looking for. ”Looks like it’s all here,” he explained. Good. He didn’t feel like leaving right now, anyway. Maybe Ivy didn’t have to move anything, but he certainly did. It was quite frustrating sometimes, living with her. Loving her when the rest of the world did, too. There was a lot to sit through – people flirting with her, people looking at her, people touching her. He would be lying if he said he never sought out any of them and made sure they knew where they stood. With a roll of the eyes, he huffed. ”Yeah, whatever.” She would probably never understand.

The corner of his lips turned down in a frown at her words. ”Yeah, you’re right.” He pulled away, going back to the box, where he began pulling out the scrubber and the other items he would need to clean the bathroom. ”We should probably start now before the Chinese gets here. I think the app said something like forty minutes,” he explained. Hopefully the food didn’t put him to sleep; then they would really get nothing done. Slouching, he headed down the hallway to the bathroom, where he opened the door and turned on the light.

There was nothing in it, yet, which gave it a bit of an eerie look. He felt uncomfortable looking at it. It certainly wasn’t as magnificent as the one their father had made back at home, but it would… do, he supposed. Sighing, he placed the spray and brush on the toilet seat and got on his knees. Though everything looked relatively clean, he knew otherwise. Who knew what went on in this bathroom? Turning his head, he picked up the bleach and started to pour it over the tub part of their shower.

Ivy nodded. She knew forcing Forrest to leave the house more than necessary would make her life more difficult. He’d get cranky if she made him go too many places in one day. She was a bad shopper, the kind who liked to wander even after she had found all of the things she needed. She liked having things, little bobbles and knick-knacks that displayed her personality and such. Cost never really mattered before, but now she’d have to count her pennies and make sure they were surviving alright, at least until she started getting paid. The responsible thing to do would be to save a lot of the money she earned so they’d never have any trouble, and so they could take care of their parents….but that wasn’t likely to happen.

Tomorrow would be better anyway. She wouldn’t admit to being tired out loud, but the trip had exhausted her. Being around Forrest this long had exhausted her, and now, it was just going to be the two of them….she wouldn’t have their mother to pick up his spirits when he was down, and she couldn’t just walk out of the house and know he’d find something else or someone else to pick on in her absence. This city was foreign to them. He’d have no reason to even leave the apartment if he didn’t want to…. ”Yeah, that’s probably for the best. We’ve got a lot we should take care of here before we start heading off to buy things. Make as few trips as possible while we’re still settling in.” They’d be busy enough without having to run to the store every five minutes. Ivy had work starting up soon, and hopefully her brother would find something to do to keep himself entertained while she was off at work. Maybe she’d buy him a book or something….. ””Oh, cool. Yeah, you can just crash with me if we don’t get through everything in time. You know I don’t mind~”

They had spent the majority of their childhood sharing a room, until it became indecent of them to do so. And even then, there were nights the twins snuck into the other’s room, curling into the warm curve of the other’s body, sharing the space. They had been bad kids, really, constantly disobeying mad defying nature and nurture both. Attention was toxic and addicting to Ivy, and Forrest was an unending source of it. She returned the favor often with touches and teases, indulging in the taboo of all their acts, and of course, she enjoyed the fun. Ivy was full of cheap tricks and unquenchable lust; a horrible combination in her teenage years. She had raised hell on their small island with Forrest at her side.

The mere thought of food made Ivy’s stomach growl quietly. They had been so busy all day, she hadn’t really even thought of it. Certainly the guilt would settle in later, but until then, she could dream about the greasy fast food in peace. They had worked enough today for her to think she deserved something after all. ”Ginger ale is fine, yeah. Whatever you want.” At this point, she didn’t care what it was, as long as they got food soon. Something to eat and drink would make her feel a million times better, at least for a little while.

Forrest always took everything she said too personally. Immediately, the air in the room shifted with his face. He was put off by her joking around, as usual. She had enjoyed overhearing the comments on her shorts, her legs, and how when she picked up a box or lifted things, her shirt rode up to settle on her hips. People noticed her, and watched her. It was like a private show. She was intoxicated by the attention, losing control of herself, giggling, and working the room to get what she wanted. She craved the limelight, and this new start would give that to her…but first she had to fix her fuddy-duddy little brother so he’d let her have some fun.

The two parted in the living room to start tackling their respective tasks. Ivy sorted out all the boxes for her room, moving them in there one by one and unpacking things. She managed to put together her bed and slide the bigger pieces of furniture into place. The closet was smaller than at their old house, but she managed to fit all the things she needed to hang in there, collapsing a few of the boxes and tossing them aside under the large window. With all of her clothes put away, and the furniture dragged into place, she only needed to really put up some bookshelves and put all her useless stuff away. She dumped out her makeup bag onto her vanity, and positioned some lamps here and there to brighten things up. She almost didn’t hear the buzzer for the door, hurrying quickly to pay the man and settle back in to eat and finish unpacking.

”Keep the change. Thank you!” Ivy gripped the bags tightly in her hands, careful not to fumble anything or trip over the minefield of boxes and bobbles through the house. ”Forrest!! The food is here, stop huffing bleach and come sit with me~” She toed a bunch of boxes into some newly formed spaces from her own things, and hollowed out a big space for them to sprawl out in on the floor. ”When we’re done eating, can you help me drag my boxspring and mattress to the bedframe? Then I can make my bed, and finish up with my room. I’ll start moving your stuff into your room, too.”
