It was the time of the month that he dreaded most. Once a month was the full moon, and it was the one time that Blair Oliver was forced into transforming into a werewolf. If that wasn’t bad enough, today was the first day of classes for the semester. Blair was a psychology professor at Oxbridge University. He taught a variety of psychology courses throughout the day. In the morning he led an Introduction to Psychology lecture, followed by Forensic Psychology, Psychology ll, Social Psychology, and ended the evening with General Psychology. Before heading to the university in the morning, he had to prepare for the night.

In the cellar of his house was his hideaway. Strong silver chains were attached to the walls, and a barred door was there so that he could lock himself in. When the moon was full, he would transform into a monster, and he wasn’t able to control his actions. His animalistic instincts took him over, and there was no telling what he would do if he was loose.

Blair was now thirty two years old, but he had been transforming since he was eighteen. It was how it worked for his family. Unfortunately, he had to go through it all alone. His parents both passed away when he was seventeen, and he had no siblings or other family. His parents warned him about his future, and did everything they could to prepare him, but he had to experience it on his own, all alone. And that was his life – a large void of solitude. He had no friends, and his love life was non-existence. After all, how do you explain to somebody that you are a supernatural creature? It was insane. His only social time was at the university where he interacted with the students. He wasn’t known as a ‘cool teacher’, nor did he want to be, but it was the only time where he really talked to other people. Even if it was only lecturing them. He was known to be quite a harsh grader, and pretty bitter person, but he just had to keep on going. Otherwise there would be nothing.

As the day went on, he kept a close eye on the clock. His final class General Psychology, and it was held from five through six p.m. The moon would be full by seven, so he needed to end class a half hour early in order to get back to the house and chain himself up in time.

The whole day he was acting up in anticipation. His body was preparing for the transformation, and affected his whole mood. His body would shiver about every thirty minutes, his eyes blinked twice as much as normal, and his body temperature raised. Although it was a cold August night, he stood in the classroom with only pants, tie, and a dark button up t-shirt – his tweed jacket was flung across the floor, and if it were up to him, he wouldn’t be wearing anything because he was so warm.

“You,” he told the first student who walked in. “Pass these out to each seat,” he ordered, and the boy nodded and took the papers. By the time the rest of the students filed in and took their seats, he began talking, “Hello. I’m Professor Oliver, and this is General Psychology. In this course we will learn about many experiments, different psychologists, and various studies. In front of you is the syllabus for this course. It has all of the information you are going to need throughout the semester. Study it. Know it. I do not want to hear any questions about late assignments or plagiarism policies. Tomorrow we will have a quiz on the information in this syllabus,” his dark blue eyes flickered to the clock. Five twenty. “Until then, you are dismissed. I will see you all tomorrow,” he bowed his head, grabbed his jacket and briefcase, and exited the room. He pulled his tie off as he hopped into his car. He needed to get home. Now.

So far for Holly College had turned out like nothing she’d ever expected it too. She absolutely loved every second that she’d gotten to spend in each of her classes. She was taking on a full semester with six classes. Biology, History, Psychology, Math, English, and an awesome Mythology class which so far Biology and Mythology had been her favorite two classes and she was sure that Psychology was going to be really great too. As strange as it might sound this was her first time in a real school setting with other . . . Normal people. She’d grown up being homeschooled by her mother and father and some of the things she’d learned weren’t really your run of the mill kind of classes.

No, growing up was absolutely crazy. She’d of course learned the basic’s reading, writing, math and some history but her history went a lot deeper most of the things growing up went deeper into the parts that no one really knew about. You know the stories about Dracula and werewolves and the boogey man . . . Those were the things that Holly had grown up on. Her family was very well known as Hunters. The people who ‘took care’ of the things that went bump in the night. She’d learned how to fight hand to hand and with weapons. She could carry a gun and knew how to take it apart and put it back together. She could also shot a bow and had spectacular aim with anything. Her parents usually went by Red, which was in their last name Redbird. You wouldn’t really realize it unless you knew about that part of the world and not many people did. Most of the time Holly wished she didn’t know.

Things for her were really complicated. The Redbirds had been around for a really long time and their children’s children always took over and what not but Holly . . . Holly didn’t really want to be a hunter. Unlike her father she could see the good in the supernatural. She’d had a run in with a demon once and she’d been on her own attacked by this demon when they figured out who she was, it had left her to die slowly and painfully in an alley way. She’d been on the brink of death with a shadow had appeared over her, a vampire who she thought was there to finish her off only he hadn’t been. He’d taken her home with him and sucked the poison right out of her veins and tended to her wounds. He’d probably been one of the nicest guys she’d ever met in her life and since he’d saved her life she’d given him a chance to show her the good side of supernatural and he had.

Holly had met families who were just trying to live, to make money and take care of their own kids. She’d seen met a couple of doctors who were vampires and witches and could save lives better than a human could. It was kind of a miracle and ever since then she’d wanted out of her father’s business of hunting. She wanted nothing to do with killing innocent lives, because that was what he did. He would kill any supernatural on sight good or bad and Holly hadn’t wanted that so she’d packed up her things and come to school where she wasn’t really sure what she wanted to do with her life. With her abilities and knowledge there wasn’t much out there for her to do really. She was hoping she could just take a bunch of classes and figure it out by the end of the semester.

This Psychology class was the last one of the day and by the time she walked through the doors she was exhausted and had about 8 missed calls on her cell phone from her father. She just wanted to get through this class and go home. Take a nice long hot bath and start on her homework. She took the syllabus from the guy passing them out and started to flip through it real quick. She flicked her eyes up when the teacher told them they would be quizzed next time and then class was over and he was out the door so quickly. She just kind of sat there for a second finding that to be very weird, but honestly kind of nice because she wanted to go home. Gathering her things she slipped her notebook into her bag and headed for the door with the rest of the group and then started the walk back to her apartment which was just on the edge of campus.

Even after all of these years, it never got any easier. The transformation was the most painful thing that Blair had ever experienced. His bones cracked and crunched to conform to his new body, hair profusely grew all over his body, and his teeth even rapidly grew. Damn it, it hurt. Then, it would all suddenly go away. All the pain was gone, and his mind went on a completely track. He wasn’t Blair anymore. He was an animal.

He was angry and hungry and wanted to hurt something. But he was chained up. He desperately tried to break free, but the chains wouldn’t budge. He growled and howled in frustration, but there was no use. He was imprisoned.

When he woke up the next morning, he was naked, cold, and still chained up. At least it was over. It wouldn’t happen again for another month. Of course, he could transform as often as he wished. If he wanted, he could be a wolf all of the time, but that wasn’t what he wanted. All he wanted was to be normal. He craved for a normal life with family and friends to care about, and to care about him.

After unchaining himself, and sliding the bar door, he trudged back upstairs to take a shower. By the time he reached the university, he was fully back to his ‘normal’ self. It was just another day.

It went by pretty slowly – none of his classes were particularly interesting since none of them started diving into the actual curriculum yet. There were no discussions or debates. He just sat as one by one, students would hand in their quizzes and leave. One girl struck him, though.

It wasn’t the girl, specifically. Sure, she was breathtakingly beautiful with her caramel skin and dark, sultry eyes, but it was the name she signed on her quiz. Holly Redbird. Redbird. Hunter.
He had only heard stories of the Redbird’s. They were supernatural hunters. They tracked down vampires, shape-shifters, demons, faeries...werewolves. But why were they here in Indiana? His parents said that they lived near the ocean, not in the middle of nowhere. This was impossible. Surely, Redbird was a common name. This was probably just another normal student.

Then again, maybe she wasn’t. She could be here because she was onto him. She could be here to kill him. As pathetic as his life was, Blair had no intention of dying. “Holly Redbird,” he spoke to her as she started turning to walk away. “Please stay after class, I need to have a word with you.”

As soon as the rest of the class filed out, he gestured for her to follow him into his office. He sat at his desk, and she sat across from him. “Miss Redbird, I’m sorry to keep you. Your last name just struck a chord with me. I think my uncle was good friends with your father,” he lied. “They live near the ocean right? How are they, did they move here? Please correct me if I’m mistaken,” he gave a nervous chuckle as he took his glasses off and placed them on the desk.

Holly spent all of the next day writing notes, taking quizzes and reading. It was kind of really dragging on and when she’d had her two hour lunch break she’d found a nice little cozy area where she’d planned on reading for her Bio class but instead she’d fallen asleep after eating her lunch. She woke up when her alarm went off for one of her classes and she had hurried off unable to get over the fact that it was only day two and she was exhausted. Life kind of did that to you when you became an adult and had to do all these adult things. She luckily didn’t have to work. She had money saved up in her savings account that would get her through for a while. Her father had cut her off after she moved away though because he was so mad at her, though he wouldn’t leave her alone.

Frank, her father so desperately wanted her to come home and take a spot on his team she had taken after her father. She could be great, make a name for herself and whoop a**, but that wasn’t what she wanted. Really all Holly wanted to do was live a normal life. Growing up learning about all the things that went bump in the night wasn’t really that fabulous. She was the weird kid that no one played with at the playground because she told them weird stories. The parents thought she was nuts and needed to be locked up and because she was a homeschooled she didn’t really date either. Sure her father’s fellow hunters had kids but they were all cruel and really weird. She hadn’t really hung out with any of them unless she had too and she made sure to let them know she wasn’t one to be messed with.

Right now, her father was threatening to come down and stay with her. She kept getting these emails about supernatural beings she should go and ‘check out’ while she was here but she wasn’t paying any attention to them and would delete the emails. Her father just couldn’t get it through his thick skull that she didn’t want to deal in the family business. She wanted to start her own life and live it as normal as she possibly could. At this rate she’d have to move across the world, change her name and have a ton of plastic surgery done.

She came out of her thoughts about her father and everything when her phone chirped letting her know that it was time for her last class of the day. Gathering her bag she headed towards the room and took a seat near the front. She was really eager to learn new things and liked sitting in the front so far, where she could see everything. Though this class hadn’t really started it was her favorite because of the professor. He was young and really attractive. It was pretty obvious that a lot of the girls in the class were really only there for him. While she’d been taking her quiz she’d found herself glancing towards him every so often. There was something about him that was really familiar but she couldn’t but her finger on it.

When it was time to go, like everyone else she’d gathered her things up and was ready to leave when he called out her name asking her to stay. She paused for a second hoping that she wasn’t in trouble. She’d done nothing yet, or at least she hadn’t thought she had. Holly followed him to his office and took a seat across from him. She was ready to explain anything until he brought up her father. That wasn’t a topic she was ready to talk to anyone about especially a man she didn’t even know. "Friends?" She asked him. "Professor that is not something my father has. I think you are thinking of the wrong Redbird and no he hasn’t moved here . . . yet." She grumbled the last part and rolled her eyes as she sat back in the chair defeated.

Blair carefully listened to the girl’s words, and while he believed that she was telling the truth, he wasn’t convinced that she was all she was cracked up to be. It was true, the Redbird’s weren’t known for being too friendly, even among the human community, so it was foolish of him to lie about his uncle being friends with the man. Still, the girl’s demeanor seemed…friendly.

He just needed to calm down. She was probably a normal college student – nothing out of the ordinary. He was probably just over analyzing everything. As a person so immersed in the world of psychology, he was known to pick details. This was probably nothing.

“My mistake,” he shrugged nonchalantly and put his glasses back on. “That is a lovely name, though. I may teach psychology, but I dabble in history as well. The name Redbird has a lot of culture behind it – it’s a family name, for sure. Wear it proudly,” he suggested.

Deciding it would be a good idea to change the topic he continued, “Tomorrow we’re going to start discussing dreams. Analyzing dreams, and such. It’s an easy study to do, you just keep a dream journal, and after a week or two, we go over symbolism and you write a paper about your dreams, and what they may represent. Sorry for holding you after class – to make it up to you, if you need any help analyzing your dreams, I’m a pro,” he joked. “Anyhow, if you need anything, feel free to ask. As you saw in the syllabus, my office hours are held from six to seven p.m. every night, but come anytime during the day, as long as I’m not lecturing, and I’d be happy to help.”

He stood up as a sign to dismiss her, and held out his hand for her to shake. “It’s been a pleasure, Miss Redbird. I’ll see you in class tomorrow evening.”

Before long Holly was on her way. She’d said good night to her professor and left heading straight back to her apartment. She found the whole visit with her professor to be kind of really weird. Not many people knew any kind of history behind her last name, kind of made her wonder. It was a very unique kind of name and you really only heard of it if you were part of that ‘other’ world. She didn’t dwell on it too much though, he was a professor couldn’t be anything totally crazy about him, right? Pushing those thoughts away she ordered dinner from a Chinese restaurant and started on her homework for the night hoping to get as much of it done as possible.

                                        {NEXT DAY}

The next morning Holly woke up sprawled out in bed with books scattered all around her. She’d been doing some extra reading and thinking about what dreams she could write down for her psych class. Usually the dreams she had weren’t really normal. Vampire and werewolves plagued her dreams and she highly doubted that people would take her seriously if she showed up to class and showed them a notebook with those kinds of dreams in them. She hadn’t come up with anything work while so she’d fallen asleep and of course hadn’t dreamed at all. Rolling her eyes she got up and headed into the bathroom to take a shower.

Forty minutes later she was heading out the front door ready to start the day off. She figured she could stop and get some coffee on her way to her first class. She’d also been looking for some kind of job to get while she was here, something that could help her save some more money. Her father had cut her off, thinking that she would come back without money but she wasn’t about to let that get her down. She had plenty left in her savings account, but it never hurt to get that extra going in there too.

For Holly the day kind of seemed to drag on. Since today was Tuesday she had two different classes, but the same Psych class, that one she had every day since it wasn’t really that long. She was kind of excited about having that one every day, she was hoping besides her Mythology class it was going to be her favorite. So, when the time rolled around for that class to start she was one of the first students in the class room taking a seat in the front row so she would be able to get a better view of the board.
