Charles Ye-Jin Park

APPEARANCE: Asian, slanted brown eyes and short, spiky black hair. Medium-height (although very tall for an Asian man) and thin (growing muscles). Slightly tanned skin. He usually wears jeans and t-shirts or hoodies.

CHARLIE was born and raised in Bristol by his parents and grandparents, who came from South Korea twenty five years ago. He is a decent, but not bright student, and he’s yet unsure of what he wants to pursue as a career. By the end of his sophomore year, he dated Sam for around 4 months, but things didn’t work out for them. One year later, they started talking again (at first online, and then on the cellphone and finally they started going out together again, either alone or on the company of other friends) and developed a strong friendship. It’s also been around a year since Charles started practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - He’d tried other sports and martial arts before, but this was different, he loved it. BJJ helped him through his grandfather’s death and through a very conflicting and confusing phase of his life. While he does have a few friends at school (he mostly hangs with seniors Harry or Tom), he’d rather hang with the people from the gym (Robert, Mitch and Tina are the ones that usually go out with him, the latter two are a couple).

Madison Clark

MADISON is well aware that her body is her own - Albeit at young age, she has liberated herself from sexist constraints and found power in feminism. She's a centered, smart girl and her grades show - Her dream is to be a doctor after all. Gossip and rumors hardly affect her well being and she doesn't get intimidated by idle threats from conservative or jealous bitches; she knows it quite well that she's living life according to a decent code. She doesn't mess around with any taken boys, unless they do a good job at lying and hiding their girlfriends, and she doesn't use sex as any kind of weapon to get anywhere - It's just pleasure... Sometimes there's a sparkling intimacy or some latent feelings, but the main purpose is always pleasure. She's not interested in a relationship just yet, but she's no anti-romantic either.

Vincent Wright

VINCENT knows he’s a good musician - He’s been playing different instruments for as long as he can remember. His father has always been a die hard rock n’ roll fan and the man has even been to Woodstock back in the day, and he’s the one to be blamed for Vincent’s passion for music in general. The boy was put to sleep by the sound of Pink Floyd and woke up with the sweet screaming of Hendrix’s guitar. Vincent’s plan was to finish high school and get out there, maybe move to LA or NYC to try the life of a musician, but his parents refused to help him - Not because they didn’t endorse his desire to become a musician, but because they didn’t want him to move out just yet. The three of them sat down and agreed that Vincent was to study Music for now, and once he was finished with college, they’d sponsor his move to a bigger city so he could try it his way (if it failed, at least he had a degree and could teach Music in a conservatory). The Wrights own a real state company and a few real estates around Bristol, so that makes them fairly well-off. Vincent has a mild problem of drug abuse and his parents suspect it - Layla's the only one of his friends that is consciously aware of it.

Layla Andrews

AGE: 22 (2nd year at college)
APPEARANCE: Caucasian, blue eyes and boyish short, brown hair. Short and skinny. She’s got one piercing in each eyebrow, a small tunnel in each ear and a nose ring. She usually wears ripped jeans or leather pants, band t-shirts and leather jackets. Spiky necklaces, bracelets and chains are usually part of her outfit.

LAYLA is a tomboy - She’s always felt that sweetness and fragility didn’t suit well with her and she’d much rather swear and act like a boy. Her friends have always been guys and this naturally led her to the rock, punk and metal scenes. Music grew in her and she’s been playing the guitar for about ten years now - The drums for four. She would like to pursue a career in music, but things ain’t that easy for her. LAYLA doen’t have a sob story of an alcoholic mother or s**t, she is just the daughter of a single mom who had never been good with money. Her mom worked hard, but spent all she got on fancy clothes, fancy food and s**t that wasn’t really important, so while Layla’s never had to worry about what to wear nor the quality of her good, they were always in debt or scraping for money to pay the bills. It took quite a while for Layla to understand just how horrible her mother was with money and for her to finally take over that responsibility. Things got better and after a couple of years working and saving, Layla managed to enroll into college to study Business. It wasn’t her passion, but given the circumstances and her background, she knew had to do something more for herself. Maybe she’d be able to focus on music later on in her life, when she had a steady and decent income. Layla was studying during the day and working at Hey You Cafe at night and her life was going fine until they got the news that her grandfather, who owned the house, had died and he’d left the house where they lived to both his children, Layla’s mother and her sister - And the sister wanted her share. Through a lawyer, they agreed that Layla and her mom would pay for half of the house in monthly installments, but even if Layla tried her best to policy her mother’s compulsive shopping, their bills were still bigger than their income.

Welcome to Bristol, Gleb.
Gleb is an exchange student from southern Russia. One look at him is enough to make a girl clutch her purse a little tighter or make a boy stand a little taller. Gleb's actually petite for a healthy eighteen-year-old, but he's strong and fit, and anyway his pride helps him add a few inches. He keeps his dark hair cut short, out of the way. Yeah, Gleb's tough: you can see it in his harsh, dark eyes, the way the lines of his eyebrows and square chin form a shield over his face. That's just his “resting” expression, though. See what happens when you excite him. When he falls in love, when he feels like having a fight. Those eyes magnify and the color flushes his Tatar-tinted face whenever a passion comes over him, which is often. He thinks he's a Stoic. He doesn't even realize...
Gleb's been studying English since childhood. He's fluent, although colloquialisms usually escape him. As of yet he hasn't decided whether to get his undergraduate degree abroad, or to spend a year in Bristol and finish his studies back in Russia.
He's quiet, but confident; he's not at all shy. No matter who he's talking to, he tends to be abrasive, automatically using language that provokes people. That is, when he speaks up. Often he prefers to observe and privately enjoy his own commentary until something excites him.
Gleb isn't looking for a serious girlfriend, but like most other young men, he's always looking for some womanly company.

Smith McMacken works in Bristol University's Kennedy Library. His job consists of office work and telling students more than they ever wanted to know about the ins and outs of information technology. He's smart, but also thick; as a result, it takes him far too long to realize that he's making a situation awkward.
Thick describes him well. He's tall, sort of chubby, and strong from summers spent working on farms back home. (He grew up in a rural area hundreds of miles away and came to Bristol to get a degree at the university.) A short, curling beard crawls from his chin all the way up to his strawberry-blonde hair. He sports pierced ears and eyebrows, accompanied by a smattering of tattoos, marking him as a part of Bristol's (meager?) counterculture/art scene.
He spends a lot of time reading and writing and isn't half bad at either. However, his introverted hobbies combined with a natural social ineptitude leave him somewhat lonely-- but that's only when he takes a break from thinking and reading about deeper things to realize that he's got more basic needs. In essence, he's getting older and is starting to realize that he would like a friend, or even a steady girlfriend.


Luis Cala

Physical: short soft shiny black hair, narrow rectangle of a face, big bright brown eyes, long rectangular nose, wide mouth, pearly teeth, smiley, thin and short; dresses kinda like a hipster, usually stylishly pairing jackets, little boots, straight-leg pants, and well-fitted t-shirts; wears a small wooden medallion on a long, thin suede cord around his neck at all times

Luis Cala has something to teach the world about love. He emanates it like radiation; he is strange and fascinating. Kind of like a radioactive space rock from a comic book. Perhaps his spirit and gaiety are simply a part of his youth-- but those who get to know him can't help but feel that he is the real deal. He is Peter Pan, he is a “manic pixie dream girl”-- in a sense!
Luis grew up in the Hispanic part of Bristol, but he charmed his way through all of the ethnic neighborhoods and moves freely about them. He's virginal in many ways: naive, as of yet an unseasoned traveler, and still figuring out his sexuality. He's got all the pros and cons of mania: impulsiveness paired with creativity and boldness, confidence that is sometimes not tactful, lavish affection that is sometimes fleeting due to a short attention span...
What will become of Luis Cala? He is a dreamy, magical kid in a world that is neither dreamy nor magical.

Samantha Baron

Physical: average height & weight, long sandy hair, light brown eyes, full features (lips, hips, and the like) but not quite good-looking; wears a lot of black or else wears peculiar clothes, hot red paints or strangely-patterned skirts &etc.

Samantha Baron gained three pounds since the last time she weighed herself.
She spends a lot of time learning about nutrition, part of her never-ending battle against her hormones over the front at her waistline. She's only 5'3” and everybody says she's thin, but then, she knows she's got an abnormally round butt, and he clothes are starting to fit too snugly... And she's dying to cut her flat, straight, sandy hair, but when it falls halfway from her shoulders to her hips, it takes the attention off of her lost girlish figure and her newly-filled cheeks.
When she's not distracted by food and her body, Sam is pretty alright. She writes poetry and sings. She had terrible social skills as a child, so she's come a long way to the girl she is now: being the first brave dancer at a party, stepping up as the spokesman of any group, and embracing quirky awkwardness quite shamelessly. Sometimes the social anxiety kicks in, but she manages.
Sam is emotional and empathetic to a fault. She can go from fine to “emotionally compromised” (a common phrase of hers) in seconds, whether it's an explosion of joy or pain.
Sam is at an interesting place in life. Due to her studies and to the city life, she's constantly meeting vibrant new people and is, in fact, becoming a cool person, herself. She loves the adventure, but at the same time, she's getting ready to settle down. She worries that she won't meet someone who can stay in her life forever, whether that person is a boyfriend, girlfriend, or best friend. Sam is pansexual, meaning she falls in love with people based on their personalities, without the restriction of gender.

Sam grew up in what she considers a backwards town, full of racists, uneducated people, and ultra-conservatives. In her own mind, she's cut ties with her family, and sadly, she's lost touch with her high school friends. That's part of the reason she feels so lonely.
Sam has introverted hobbies, but she likes spending time with people doing things like taking walks, cooking, playing music... She shines when she's just talking to people one-on-one, but add just one extra person, and her personality gets kind of subdued. She studies Russian and Spanish in school and intends to work with translation.

Physical: average height, skinny, short and thick dirty-blonde hair, hazel eyes, tanned, often kind of grungy looking and smelling faintly of woodchips or dead leaves (depending on where she's been sleeping); wears clothes and shoes that she finds around or steals from thrift shops, most of which are too big or too snug; always carries a home-made satchel she fashioned out of a canvas sack, slung across her torso

Meet Satchel. Meet her and try not to stare. Meet her and feel awkward because you may have never met anyone quite like her.
No one can tell if Satchel is a little boy or a girl. They don't know her age, but in any case, she is far too young to be what she is: an apparent orphan on the streets of Bristol who's never gone to school. There may have been a time when authorities tried to rescue her and put her into a safe, stable home, but if they ever tried, she must have thwarted them. She can be seen ambling around the city, usually in the quietest parts, such as the old railroad tracks that skirt the edge of the city-- you know, by the river. One of her favorite past-times is people-watching, preferably undetected by those she watches. She's had a few fleeting friendships throughout her young life, but they have all met the same fate: one day, the friends stopped coming to meet her in their secret meeting places, and that was the end. Some she would see occasionally in town; others, she presumed had moved away.
Satchel is somewhat hardened and desensitized by city life. She's tough and prematurely wise; she doesn't ever cry and accepts whatever comes to her as natural and surviveable. However, she is still a child. Street life hasn't stamped out her empathy or her curiosity.


Ms. Andrea Simon.
Age: 45
Physical: a little short, full-figured and healthy, dark skin with freckles under her black eyes, dignified and angular face, black thick-plastic-framed glasses, very short and curly black hair; dresses very well though also simply, not showing much skin or wearing much jewelry, although she always wears dark lipstick and slightly-wedged shoes (for a little height boost)

"It's Andre," she says to anyone who calls her otherwise. Andre grew up in Bristol and had high hopes of being an actress. She nearly completed the Theatre Arts program at Bristol University, but dropped out near the end of her junior year. She doesn't like to talk about why. After that, she worked some menial jobs and, in her off-time, fully immersed herself in the music scene downtown. Through connections and hard work, she came to own a local cafe at the tender age of 38. That was seven years ago; since then, the cafe, called Hey You Cafe but nicknamed Heyya's, has since gained a reputation as one of the best place for open-mics, indie shows, and cool 18+ events (permitting alcohol).
Andre has a short-fuse and a commanding presence. She never dances at the events she hosts, just watches from the wings, sometimes inviting privileged people to her humble VIP table in the corner. She lives well, but is lonely. She'd like to get married, but hasn't found a decent man yet. Occasionally, the young regulars of her cafe will impress her and she'll take them under her wing, giving them free coffees and free life advice. She's always been much better at understanding and helping other people than taking care of herself.

Liam, a middle-aged coworker at the library. He thinks Smith is strange and kind of pathetic. They share a strange friendship, one that never reaches beyond the workplace.

He often talks to Andre Simon, the owner of the Hey You Cafe. He does open mics there as well as regularly attends their small concerts.

Many ex-girlfriends, including:
-Annie, a sweet and soft country girl from back home that he writes to occasionally. He hasn't seen her for a few years.
-Roxy, if that is her real name. Someone he met online. She tricked him into paying for a lot of stuff.
-Jamie, his most recent ex. A girl who lives in Bristol. A complicated girl, an artist. They don't talk, but he's not over her.


Luis
Cindy and Roberto Cala, affectionate (but divorced) parents. Luis lives with his mom.

Crystal Leiva, Luis's cousin (mom's side of the family) who lives with him. Her parents are absent, and Luis's mom adopted her. She and Luis are close, although they are foils and don't quite understand each other.

Camilla Rothschild, a rich and reckless college freshman in Bristol. She's been a fond acquaintance of Luis for a while, and lately she's been interested in corrupting him. He's just too innocent.


Sam
Charlie is her ex. She's not particularly close to anyone else right now.. but would like to be.


Satchel
If someone asks about her parents, she makes a game out of telling every new person she talks to a different story about who they were and what happened to them.

Sloop, a lost border terrier that often follows Satchel around. She feeds him.


Andre Simon
Her 75-year-old father, Simon. Yes, his name actually is Simon Simon. He lives alone, but Andre visits him a few times a week.

Ruth Jordan, Andre's best friend. They grew up together in Bristol. Ruth is a humble actress, like Andre wanted to be.

Andre knows Smith, as he frequents her cafe. She likes him and tries to help him sort himself out.
Of course she also knows Layla and Dennis, who work there.

She was having a hard time with it and being the older brother (and having a big brother complex) moved to help out as much as he could. He's hardworking and doesn't have much time to himself due to both jobs and his family responsibility. His big brother complex adds into his morals as he thinks he's doing the right thing to support his sister, but despite not having time and strict moral values, he's friendly and doesn't mind striking up a conversation with anyone. He's easy going when it comes to his free time when he has it.

tab tab Elias wasn't born in Bristol either, but rather a big city and thus, he has the big city personality. He doesn't attend to his responsibility and has no qualms with failing all his classes-after all he wasn't paying for them. His parents were. One could say that he's had everything handed to him on a silver platter and honestly, he may have. But his parents weren't ever around as they worked none stop. A lot of people who know him think that's where his alcoholic tendencies and attitude stem from, which Elias firmly denies. True be told, he's emotionally mixed and lashes out on anyone whether they take it or not and lash back. He's got a bad temper and can flip on the drop of a pen. He's essentially alone with little 'friends' around to party with him.

Okay! I'm officially moving the ooc chat & plotting chat & anything else to this thread. Yay!

I enjoy ooc chat as well. It's great to get to know the people behind the words.

As for character biographies, again I find it can be an optional thing. I suppose I'll probably have some succinct information I'd like to share about some of my characters' pasts, but mostly I'll create/develop/deepen my characters' as the game proceeds.

So, yeah, maybe we should come to an agreement on what should necessarily be included in our characters' profiles ? Preferentially things that can help us - if we get confused or forget something, we could check here instead of re-reading everything.

I'd say:

> Appearance or face-claim
> 3 adjectives that could describe his or her personality in a nutshell (? Or should this be more elaborate? Or should we make this optional?)

As for the optional fields: Biography, hometown, likes and dislikes, sexuality, etc...

Personally, I won't put secrets in a character's profile. For example, if he or she is gay but in the closet, it's a juicy thing to develop through the game and not to give out in the profile. wink Or maybe if the character is going through hard times due to something that happened and he or she is lashing out and being uncharacteristically aggressive, I'd leave that for the game also.
