“Are you sure you want to do this?”
Kai’s mother watched her son step out the door. The redhead hesitated, although it was hard to see his hair under the hood that was worn up.

Kai slowly turned around to face his mother. He wore his father’s somber expression, earrings, frivolities he wouldn’t have had a few years ago.

”I’m sure.”

“I mean, this is your first time returning to school, and you’ll be older than your classmates-”

”It’s just a year mom. Eighteen isn’t too big of a deal.”

Kai’s mother recovered from the shock of being interrupted. She slowly nodded “You stay out of trouble, okay?” She said

Kai nodded, before continuing his exit out the door.

It had been so long since Kai had walked any sort of school hallway, having left middle school and joined his father’s monastary. The school had decided that he would fit nicely into the third year students, due to the time he spent away from school to live a life in seclusion.

God, he had so many regrets. Kai shook them out of his head and continued walking.

And down your streets I've walked alone,
As if my feet were not my own
Such is the path I chose, doors I have opened and closed
I'm tired of living this life,
Fooling myself, believing we're right, when...
I've never given love
With any Conviction of the Heart

Anatoli Berezovsky

┏━━━━━━━━━┓

"Do not let any one tell you what you can and can not do. Only you can set your own limits." Those words tend to echo trough his mind from time to time. Anatoli's mother was the only parent who truly believed in him despite the fact he could see nothing but darkness. However, he did not believe his father was wrong in not making him the family heir. there was only so much a blind seventeen year old boy can do.

Anatoli Berezovsky comes from a big wealthy family, being the only son, and the youngest among three older sisters. Their family have moved to Japan from Russia around the time he was in middle school. Being the only son, the family business would belong to him. However, there was also the fact that their only son was born blind, and the men working there might not be comfortable working for someone like him. Well, he didn't mind, there was a chance he might like being the head of a big business.

The lad could hear the sound of the brakes as the limousine had stopped in front of his high school. The chauffer opened the door for him and helped him out of the vehicle. Knowing the area, he didn't need an escort nor a guiding stick to get him through the school. Most of the students tend to avoid Anatoli because of the fact he couldn't see, not to mention he was a bit of the odd type. He didn't mind, he liked the solitude. it didn't take him long to find the room and sit himself down on his usual spot.

Kai sat down at his desk, and immediately whispers started amongst his classmates. Most of them were probably about his appearance. He shrugged them off, as class started.

One of the first assignments that the teacher had them do was introduce themselves to each other and learn five facts about each other. Kai sighed amongst the chatter and swivelled around in his chair, stomping both feet at the same time as he stopped.

”Kai Akane, I’m eighteen-” He began counting off five facts on his fingers, not realizing the boy behind him was blind. ”I like sweet food, this is dyed hair, I like cats and, uhh... lived in a monastary.”

Kai’s bluntness ended as his response was silence. ”You want me to repeat those?” He scoffed at the white haired kid. Kai didn’t mean to pass himself off as a delinquent, he was just tense about the last fact about himself. Broken vows, shame, his father’s last words to him.

Kai wasn’t used to life outside a secluded place, and he did sort of feel out of place, but he ignored it. He waited for the other kid to respond to him and give his five facts before they would present them. What did this have to do with mathematics anyways?

Kai listened in to what the boy said, he would forget what the boy said to him soon enough, although not by choice, but by the sudden transition of not getting used to memorizing facts about people that weren’t passersby or tourists in the monastery.

OOC:I can help if need be, but for now, it works.

Anatoli Berezovsky

┏━━━━━━━━━┓

From all the whispers he could hear, they were going to have a new student in their class. One who was a bit older than the rest. Quite strange, he thought to himself, but the idea didn't bother him. he was once the new student, the new foreign exchange student. All he could do was listen to what the new male had to say since his pale opaque blue eyes didn't work.

Anatoli couldn't help but raise an eyebrow as he heard the sound of a scoff. No doubt he thought that he wasn't paying attention. Blind people didn't need to look at another person to know what was going on. The teacher noticed that and said something to Kai "Oh, I see you've noticed Anatoli. he's not ignoring you, he's just blind." The Russian boy sighed, he hated when people had to explain things to people. "I am not mute. I could have told him that myself." he said, his accent was an indicator that he was not a native of Japan.

well, from what he could hear, the guy's been through many things. Nothing like the life Anatoli had, being part of a wealthy family he didn't have to do a lot of work, everything to him was handed to him on a silver platter. He had a life no one in this entire school would ever understand.

Kai raised an eyebrow. So, the kid was blind, huh… ”Well you heard the teach,” he said casually. ”What are your five things?”

Kai listened in on what the boy had to say, but eventually tuned out after the second thing. Not that Kai was ignorant, his mind just zoned out, a product of his previous meditation training.

If one could see Kai a few years ago, you would have seen a bald boy, tranquil, quiet, not like the delinquency that had brewed today. He would have been wearing his monk robes, chanting prayers on beads.

Kai slipped back into consciousness. He nodded his head to make it look like he was listening, even though the boy couldn’t see him. ”Interesting.” He said, shooting out the word to make it seem convincing that Kai had been listening to the boy and his accent.

“Aand… time’s up.”

Kai sat back in the proper position when the teacher called their attention back. Kai blinked a few times, and the teacher called his name, asking him what Anatoli’s name was. ”Uhh… An… Bere… Kai pondered it, before turning back to the boy, ”What’s your name again?” He whispered.

The teacher was obviously not impressed. ”Anatoli Berezovsky.” She reminded Kai, a flat tone in her voice. ”Bere…. bear. Kuma. Got it.” Kai said, speaking the second word in English.

Wait, so it was his turn to talk? he thought this was the sort of thing the new kids would have to do. but maybe they now do it in order for the new students to know their fellow classmates. "I am Anatoli Berezovsky. I was born in Moscow, Russia. I am the youngest among four children. I am the only son. I own a Siberian husky. My favorite Japanese food is sashimi." Well, that was all he said for now, and that was all they should know.

Once that was said, he sat himself down. When the new student had trouble saying his name, he didn't look surprised, this wasn't the first time this has happened."Just call me Anatoli. That should not be too hard to say." There have been a few students who have given him a rather feminine nickname, but he'd rather not be called that, it irritated him. "And the one speaking, behind me, is Kai, da?" he said.

”Kuma.” Kai said, turning back to his desk. Bears lived in Russia, right? It was only because the first bit of his last name sounded like the English word Bear. The three syllables of the kid’s name wouldn’t be easy for Kai, who preferred nicknames.

The other students introduced themselves, and Kai of course, zoned out. He couldn’t help it, but managed to zone back in when it came to the rest of the day.

~~~
When school ended, Kai got up from his seat. ”See you Kuma.” He called, casually walking out, going to Junes for some shopping he had to do. Kai didn’t really care that he may have offended Anatoli, he was sort of the type to not care, be it a facade or not.
At any rate, he still had to get a heater from Junes. Now that he actually lived in a place that had air conditioning (and not stone cold walls), he may as well go buy a heater, regardless of the season. For once, he could own material possesions.
Anatoli wondered if the new student was talking to him, clearly that wasn't his name. Living in a proper home, he's never really used nicknames, except for his sisters, they were the only ones who can call him whatever they wanted.
----
Once class has ended, the Russian lad had gathered his things. When Kai called him Kuma, Anatoli's left eye twitched. That was not his name, if he was to address him, it should be by his name, the one given to him by his parents. Once he got his things, he got up and left the classroom. he didn't exit through the school front, but to the side. He was a bit tired of having people escort him around like he were a child. He was blind, not stupid, after living in this town for years, he memorized the area. Feeling a bit hungry, he stopped by one of the street eateries and ordered himself a steak skewer. The Russian was quite a sucker for meat.
Kai made his way down to Junes. The catchy theme song was starting to get on his nerves. He made his way over to the heating section, looking at all the heaters. His room got cold quite frequently, but now he had a chance to do something about it. Back at the monastary, all he could do was curl up in a ball with a threadbare blanket.
It sometimes felt weird to Kai that he was back here in the real world. Amongst people, who were materialists, when he had lived a life of solitarity and free from material possessions. He had to get used to it now though.
But that life of loneliness, it got him in trouble. Offered companionship, a few stray hands… Kai shuddered visibly at the memories when they walked him down those dark lines. He knew he had broken his vows, and he knew that it was wrong, but it felt so good.
He had gotten lucky. He had offered to leave, the other one was to be die… His father…
Kai sighed, not knowing what his feelings were now. If it had been a different situation, would that have made it okay?
it didn't take his bodyguards long before they spotted Anatoli at his usual eating spot. He really hated being followed around. His mother ordered them to make sure nothing bad happens to him, but when will she learn he can handle himself on his own. Just because he can't see, doesn't mean he can't do anything.
In his limo, he was soon taken back to his mansion which was a bit far from Inaba. it was fine with him, Anatoli didn't really have a social life, especially since people feel a bit awkward around him. All the company he had was with his servants and his parents. His two older sisters were married, and the other sister was in the university in the big city. After doing his homework, he would go to his room and read a book written in Braille. Not needing any light, he could read with no trouble using only his fingertips as he could feel the small bumps. has he wondered what it would be like to have friends? maybe, but he knew it would only be because they felt sorry for him in his condition, or for his money, not for him.
Kai walked home, having no money to actually buy a heater. He sighed. At least he could scrounge enough money for one, or put on an extra pair of pants, or even eat something warm before bed besides slop.
Life would be better, it would be perfectly fine. He looked up at the sky, before walking home.
When he did get there, his mother offered to take him to counselling. She said the teachers had noticed him spacing out in class today. Kai rolled his eyes and declined. He could deal with this on his own. It would be no problem.
He went up to his room. His room. No more sharing with 20 other silent men in a large stone room. Least he could have some privacy.
His mother had found the gaming console he had when he was little. Kai picked up the controller, examining it. Some better memories flooded back. Best to replace those with the ones before he had no hair. Kai shrugged and hooked it up to the TV, and began playing until night fell.
Even at home, Anatoli would spend his time alone. When you're blind, you can't really do stuff normal teenagers would do like play games or chat online, not that he was into that sort of thing. All he liked to do was read classic stories. Most of the modern writings were either clichéd or he finds them trashy. he heard a knock on the door, he recognized his maid's voice, telling him it was time for dinner. The Russian boy ordered her to bring his dinner over to his room, he planned to eat before bed.
Soon enough, his traditional Russian dinner was brought over to him. Couldn't it hurt them to make him something Japanese? They are living in a different country, so why can't they get into their culture? Well, food was food, so he might as well take it. After he finished his dinner, he removed his shirt and climbed into bed, resting himself for tomorrow. he had a bit trouble sleeping though, he didn't know why. Maybe it was still a bit early? it was a bit hard to keep track of time when you're reading.
Kai played his gamed until it was late. He couldn’t help but feel nostalgia at these games, especially after a few years of complete and utter silence.
Not to mention, he could stay up as late as he want, so long as he didn’t disturb his mother. Before, everyone was expected to be asleep by a certain time.
Kai turned off his gaming console, stretching. That poor woman, to have her family leave for a monastery, then a few years later having her son come back and her husband gone. She had been so strong during the grieving process.
Kai went to bed, in his multiple layers of blankets and soft mattress. Immediately he fell asleep, like he did every night, the sheer comfort of it overwhelming him.
~~~

The next morning was the same. Kai’s mother asked him if he wanted to take a break, and Kai refused. He needed something to take his mind off the past, even if it was spacing out in class. Besides, he was of age to graduate, and having a high school degree was useful.

Kai went to class as usual. 3-2 was starting to get used more to his presence, only a few whispers. ”Hey Kuma.” He remarked to Anatoli, before sitting down at his desk.

Anatoli Berezovsky

┏━━━━━━━━━┓

It seemed the blind Russian lad didn't get a lot of sleep last night, one could tell by the bags under his eyes. However, that didn't stop him from going to school, even though he was told to stay at home for the day. He was not the type who would skip school, even if sick. The limo stopped in front of the school, the door opened for him and he stepped himself out. it was quite a dull routine, but it's not like he could make things exciting.

Knowing the way to go, he arrived at his classroom and took his seat at the same spot he always sat on. He took out his books, ready for today's lecture. While he did that, his eye twitched as he heard the dreaded nickname given to him by the new student. "If you must address me, please call me by my name. Anatoli Berezovsky. I do not like such childish nicknames." He also heard a couple of snickers from the guys, saying he was too scrawny to be called a bear. Such nicknames are given to strong guys.
