My book When I was little, I loved playing long and hard, and I didn't mind if my girl friends were playing house inside. I just ran outside and played tag with the boys. When my brother was small, I had to take him fishing and help him learn to swing a bat and such, because my dad is such a wimp. As I grew up, I didn't change, and I still rather go out to play soccer than stay inside and text my girlfriends asking to hang out at the mall. Now that I'm in highschool, it isn't view highly. I'm shoved around school all day, and rumors fly around about me being bi or lesbian or whatever, and there isn't anything I can do to stop it, since I can't change who I am. I just grin and bear it. Lucky me that I've got my iPod, full of JB's songs to inspire me to keep my head up.
People say I'm Spunky, sarcastic, intelligent, brave, strong-willed, clever
In an argument I rather stand my ground. Don't underestimate me.
Glass half empty or half full? I'm just at the half-mark. There is no half-empty or half-full. In other words, it depends on the situation.
My dream is to open my own skate shop.

::======>>❛I'm your Tomboy❜
❝I keep doing my own т н ι ɴ ɢ . . . ❞

✗
I slammed my locker shut and held my books to my chest as I stormed out of the school building. "I hate them, I hate them, I hate them," I seethed under my breath. Melissa and Jaquie, those bitches, they just get a kick out of humiliating me. Today, the two of them got their usual preppy-girl gang together and cornered me during class on my way to the office and shoved me into the guy's restroom and locked me in with the janitor's key (which they no doubtedly stole from him while giving him a blow-job or something. Of all the immature pranks they could think of, locking me into the guy's bathroom and telling me that it's where I belonged was the worst. It was degrading and humiliating, so they got twice the props for it around school. I had to sit on the disgusting floors for three hours before someone finally had to go bad enough to run to the office and unlock the door. Of course, I ignored Melissa and Jaquie on my way out, but while I was opening my locker my vision was blurred by stupid tears and it took twice as long to open the retarded thing. Now I had to force myself to hold my head up high and not run out of the building. Lucky me the office saved me before school ended, or I'd have been there all night. Literally. So, when I finally make it outside, instead of heading to the student parkinglot where my friend Lizzi waited in her beat-up truck to drive me home, I turned and headed around the back of the school and walked down the familiar path through some trees. I had told Lizzi earlier that I wouldn't need a ride today, so she wouldn't be freaking out and calling the cops when I didn't show up.
✗
I walked through the trees a bit of a ways until they parted again and I was in the city park. I used to come here all the time as a kid, feeding thee geese bread by the little pond or climbing upside-down on the monkey bars. I found the short-cut from my school only a little while ago, and I started coming here regularly again. I marched passed the playgrounds, where cute little three year olds stumbled around in the mulch or their parents pushed them in the swings. I passed that pond where there were hand-made wooden benches that teenagers carved their initials surrounded by hearts with pocketknives. I even passed the vending machines under the shade of the awning. I always passed these whenever I came here now, and always headed straight for my cherry tree. My cherry tree is the only cherry tree in the entire park, and it was hidden from the eyes of any park-goers or old couples on a walk. The only reason I knew were it was is because I got lost in the woods once, trying to find the same shortcut from school I used earlier. I finally came out of the trees and there it was, standing magestically. There was even a little bench to sit in front of it if you wanted to stay a while. Eventually I found out it wasn't that far away from the pond, but it was hidden because the woods sort of curved around it, so if you were to run straight through the woods directly behind the pond, you'd find it, so I started coming here almost everyday.
✗
I normally came here to think and just chill, listen to my iPod or whatever. Most importantly, I can avoid Melissa and Jaquie. I finally made it to the little path through the trees I found to my tree, so I pulled my iPod out of my pocket and popped my earphones in, hitting play without checking the screen. I sighed wearily and headed onto the worn-out trail. The path isn't long, only a few feet through the trees, and I could already see the gorgeous pink blossoms of my cherry tree from where I stood. I grinned and lightly jogged through, quickly emerging through the other side. It looked beautiful. The tree looked beautiful, standing up straight despite the cold weather. The blossoms were beginning to fall off, they littered the grass around the tree and covered the old wooden bench in pink snow. I paused to admire it before walking up to the tree as I usually did, ignoring the bench and gripping a limb and hauling myself onto it. I swung my legs to the beat of the music playing. As usual, it was a Justin Bieber song. I don't know why I like his songs so much, maybe because they make me feel... girly? Normally I have people joking about me being a lesbian and how I have no sex appeal because I don't wear slutty tight shirts but comfy t-shirts and jeans. Oh, and I'm such a brute because I like eating pizza and I play videogames with my brother while babysitting him. Right, because I so care what those stupid whores think. While I listened to JB's songs, I felt like someone might speak like that to me one day... Yeah, right. Wishful thinking. I readjusted my beanie, I forgot I had it on. Then I pulled my legs up and leaned back, laying out and staring up through the mass of pink like I was a part of the tree. "Ah... Peace..."

- Thwump, thwump, thwump was the only sound I could hear, other than my thoughts. Another hollow thwump sound was made as I once again threw my basket ball against the wall, flinching slightly as it came flying back towards me; before I caught it.”JUSTIN!” I heard my mom call. With a sigh I sat up and looked at my door, expecting her to come crashing through it like a crazed, dyed blonde tornado. ”Yeah?” I called my timidly when she didn’t come busting through the door. ”Stop with the basket ball. It’s driving me mad” She said. I rolled my eyes and threw the basket ball across the room, smiling with satisfaction when it made a loud noises, then a few quiet ones before it finally stopped bouncing off the floor. With a sigh I fell back against my pillows and closed my eyes. I was so. Freaking. Bored. Part of me loved not having to go to public school. The other part of me detested the fact that after my home-school teacher left, I had nothing to do. I had no real friends because well… Mom wouldn’t let me go to school. I had beaten all my video games, the computer no longer held my interest, and my mom wouldn’t let me go out unless it was into the backyard. At least not until the afterschool crowd cleared out of the streets. I sighed and sat up, looked around my room, then fell back again. I did that a few times before I finally let out a loud groan and scooted to the end of my bed, before I jumped off it and paced around. ”MOM!” I called, knowing that I probably sounded like some spoiled brat rich kid asking his mom to find him something to do. ”Yes Justin?” She said, coming into my bedroom. I frowned at her and shook out my hair. ”What is it, do you want a haircut? What is it?” She asked. I rolled my eyes and threw out my arms. ”I’m so bored” I said. She frowned at me and made the face she always made when she was about to give me the ‘you know you can’t go outside yet, or else you’ll get mobbed’ lecture, which was a cross between constipation, and the face someone made when they tasted something yucky. I put my hand up before she could even start, causing her to huff. ”I’m going to the park. End of story” I said, then pulled on a black sweater, brushed my hair quickly, and walked past my mom who was still standing in the middle of my room, now looking like she was about to pee her pants. Oh, the faces my mom makes.
♪
- Humming One Time to myself, I walked down the stairs and through the hallway of our large house. I could hear my mom scrambling around like a chicken with its head cut off upstairs, probably trying to figure out what to do with her ‘wild rebelling son, who refuses to listen to her’. I smirked to myself and opened the front door a crack. When I saw no girls camping out on my front lawn, I opened the door all the way and took a deep breath. Then I stepped out, and closed the door behind me. I quickly put on a pair of Ray Bans, and pulled my hood up. With a happy sigh, I put my hands in my pockets and hopped down the front steps of my house, then began walking towards the park. It was a nice day, despite the slight chill in the air, and although shitty—my disguise seemed to be working. With a smile, I walked down the street, a little bit of a hop in my step, as I made my way towards the park I always went to whenever I was allowed out. It seemed so stupid to me, that my mom locked me up in the house, because she was afraid of me being mobbed, robbed, or raped. Honestly? Anyway, wasn’t going out like… Good PR, or something? I shook my head slightly and passed a group of girls on the street who were giggling about something stupid. They gave me a suspicious look, but shrugged and continued walking. I walked a little longer, walking in step with the hum that I continued in my head, and immediately felt happier when I saw the park up ahead. Maybe I’d sit by the cute little pond on one of the benches, and work on my set list for a wedding I was playing at. It was kind of weird to me… That I was playing a wedding, but the people that called my manager said that there were a bunch of younger, and teen girls that ‘loved’ me, and would be happier going if I were playing. Either way, I couldn’t play only my songs, so I needed to come up with a good set list, with wedding-y songs, so that I could work on them, and get the arrangement for the band done. When I made it to the edge of the park, I was relieved that no one had called me out on my disguise yet. I quickly crossed the park, and sat on an empty bench beside another bench, which had an elderly couple holding hands. I smiled at them, and nodded, then pulled a folded up piece of paper and a pen out of my pocket, and began scribbling down songs I could play at the wedding.
♫
- At one point, during my set list work, my hood blew off. I, of course, ignored it, seeing as only the elderly couple was nearby, and it didn’t seem like they’d be squealing and chasing after me anytime soon. I also pulled off my sunglasses, shoving them into my pocket quickly, before I went back to my work. I must have been working for about 20 minutes, just recreating the list as I thought of songs that would work better than the ones I currently had. I sighed, and put my pen in my mouth. Then I stretched out my cramped fingers… And that’s when I heard it. One lone, crazed, girlish squeal. My eyes widened, as I saw the girl staring at me… then her friend… Then a bunch of other girls around her all began to notice, and my brain was sending my legs frantic messages, telling them to go, go, go. Quickly, I folded the paper back up, and shoved it into my pocket, then the pen, then ran like hell. I could hear them all giggling and squealing as they chased after me. Some of them were calling my name, others were crying… One was frantically yelping that she loved me. I squinted my eyes closed and continued running though the large, open part of the park. I opened my eyes and could feel myself beginning to get tired, but I couldn’t stop. As I ran, more girls began to notice me, and I would most definitely lose something if I slowed down even a little bit. I desperately prayed that it wouldn’t be my pants that I lost… How would I explain that one to mom? I let out a huge puff of air, and brushed my hair out my eyes. I could see the line of a small forest-y area of trees ahead, and ran blindly into them, hoping I could lose them somewhere in there. Of course, they had their sights set on me, and would not let me get away from them. Luckily, the forestness made it harder for them to be as fast, so I continued to stumble blindly through the trees, until I was suddenly no longer surrounded by trees. I stopped running, panting like crazy, to look around. The whole area looked like the scene of a fairy tale. It was all pink, and snowy-looking. In the middle of the area, kind of hidden by other trees, there was a cherry blossom tree, which was my favourite kind of tree. Although, I couldn’t enjoy it too long. I soon heard giggles amongst the trees as the girls got closer and closer to the area, so once again I began sprinting, until I wasn’t even on the ground anymore. I let out a little yelp of surprise, but the minute my bum hit something solid, I began taking big heaving breaths. I looked below me to see the girls all standing around confused, then turned to see the guy… Girl? Guy girl?... Guy-Girl that had pulled me off the ground. I just closed my eyes and secured myself on the branch I was seated on, letting out more heaving breathes, unaware of the unattractive redness on my face at the current time.

I probably got the chance to listen to a few songs, my favorites being 'According to You' and 'Favorite Girl,' but the peace I'd found in my cherry tree didn't last long. I heard a loud crashing and roaring coming from the trees, and I pulled my ear phones out and gaped at the tree line, wondering what in the world was coming out of there. Couldn't be some wild animal, Toronto was an urbanized city. Not wild cats or boars roaming around here. Hopefully no bears, either. Then, I saw someone dash out of the trees frantically, looking over his shoulder every three seconds like he was running for his life. He was still running even as he drew closer to the tree, and I, assuming it was an animal still, started flipping out. I couldn't just let this guy, woah, excuse me- this uber hott stranger guy-- be skewered by whatever was chasing him. It wasn't human! So I quickly hooked my feet between two branches in the tree and leaned over by the ground, where he was running and before he could stop me, I looped my arms through his and hauled him up onto the branch with me. The stranger did manage a yelp, but other than that, he just gripped the tree limb tightly and closed his eyes, breathing heavily. Tomato-red colored his face, which threw me for a bit. He ran so hard he was flushed? What sorta thing was chasing him, exactly?! Then I turned to the trees as a hord of squealing girls ran out from the path the guy had just come from. They were shouting things like 'I love you,' and 'Oooooomigosh.' They looked like... groupies. My eyes grew wide as I watched the crowd below us look around, goofy smiles fading as the twirled around looking for their object of obsession. Ok, so there are wild animals roaming around Toronto. I recognized a few girls from my school in the group, and when I moved over to another branch, away from the guy they were chasing, one of them looked up and noticed me in the tree. Ah, s**t...
✗
And what do you know? It was just my luck that the girl who noticed me up in this tree was none other than Melissa. With a sneer, Melissa gazed up at me and put her hands on her hips. "Oh. Hey, Pat. Havin' fun playing zoo in your little tree, ape?" I gritted my teeth and returned a fake smile, securing my beanie before flipping up-side down like I had before and facing Melissa on her own level. "Why, yes. Yes I am. Why don't you join me? I know this reeeeally cute gorilla you've just got to meet." She blanched, then stuck out her tongue at me. Oh, wow. That's so mature."Whatever, Pat. I don't have time for this. Did you see any uber hot pop star boys run through here? Oops, I forgot, you play for the other team. Or is it that you're straight after all? Since you're such a guy. Either way, there's no way you'd notice the boy we're looking for." I flinched, but just glared at her after that. "Oh, really? Well, then I guess it doesn't matter that I happened to see a pretty frantic looking guy run through here a second ago..." Melissa's eyes flashed, and her sneer tuned into an open gape. "Oh, please please please tell me where he went!" I rolled my eyes and pointed off in the direction that would lead them back to the pond. Melissa and her group didn't even say thanks, not like I expected them to, but just ran off in the direction I'd pointed, squealing and shouting once more like a pack of wild animals. Damn... this guy sure is popular. I'm proud to say I don't do the whole teenage girl obsession-with-rock-stars thing, actually, I don't even know what half of the artists on my iPod look like, so it's kinda hard for me to understand why anyone could act in such a demeaning way and like it. I mean, nobody, no matter how sexy, is going to make me act like an idiot and drool over myself like those girls do. Sure, I think it'd be cool to meet someone, say, Josh Ramsay, or Justin Bieber, but I love their music. Those crazy fans say they love Justin or whatever, but that's not possible. They don't even know the guy, how can they love him if they've never met him? If I did get to meet Justin, I'd probably ask him stuff about his career, like what got him into music, what song is he going to write next, stuff like that. The norm. I'd definitely die from embarrassment if I even watched some fangirl throw herself at him during a CD signing or something. Fangirls are an embarrassment to the feminine gender.
✗
When they disappeared from sight, I pulled myself back upright onto the branch, but my hat fell off, letting my tanlged hair fall around my face annoyingly. I looked to the ground and saw my black and blue striped beanie, it stood out laying there amongst the pinky blossoms. I thought about jumping down there and getting it to put it back on, but just ended up shrugging and leaving it there. My hair wasn't in the way that much really. I finally turned to look at the strange guy I'd left over on the other branch. I couldn't understand why he was still there, sitting on the perch in the tree, when he should be running back to wherever it is he came from before that horde figured out my trick and came back for him. "Um... they're gone now," I said lamely. Maybe he was stuck in the tree? He still hadn't moved... Oh well. Nothing I could do that wouldn't damage his guy pride or whatever. I mean, being helped into and out of a tree by a girl? Unbelievable.

- I continued sucking air into my system like crazy, not realizing how dizzy, or tired you could get from sprinting across… A large… park. Okay, it made sense that I was having trouble breathing. But to this person, who had even less of an idea of where I came from, then I had about their gender; I probably looked really, really out of shape. I opened my eyes after a minute, and looked down to see the dopey group of girls all standing around looking… Dopey, confused and of course, excited. My breathing began to slow, and I pressed my cold hands against my face, hoping that my face would un-redden a bit. I sighed and closed my eyes again, allowing my hands to cool my face a little more, before I removed them from my cheeks, and went back to clutching the tree branch for dear life. I opened my eyes again as I heard, and felt movement. I was slightly confused, and ready to flail around yelping for someone to call an ambulance, when I no longer saw the guy-girl in front of me; but calmed down when I saw they were hanging from the branch, looking at some snotty looking girl. I only heard bits of the conversation. Snob numero uno called my savoir ‘Pat’ and an Ape. Pat could be either gender, which didn’t help me at all, and ape… I didn’t even want to get into the complications of figuring out that insult. I then heard ‘Pat’s’ reply. At first their reply just seemed sarcastic, when the guy-girl said something about a cute gorilla up there with him-her, that the snob just had to meet. Okay, so I already thought it was uncool of him-her to call me a gorilla, but calling me cute? Now, I was really hoping this guy-girl was a girl-girl, because… Otherwise I’d be really, really uncomfortable. (Not that I have a problem with gays or anything… I just don’t feel so comfy-womfy sitting in a tree with a guy-girl that called me cute). Was he-she even talking about me? So… Instead of worrying about it, I decided to sing a song in my head, until I could actually figure out what was going on, and until I could get out of this tree. You've got me crazy in love, but I swear it's not enough. I'm in way over my head, but it's you I'm dreamin' of...
♪
- At some point, my constantly babbling mind shut up, and I tuned into the conversation between the two. My eyes instantly widened as I heard the snobby looking bobble-head girl asking about ‘uber hot pop star boys’. I swear my heart started beating so hard that even the people in China could hear it. Did I really want crazed fan girls chasing me up a tree that I honestly could not get out of without help? No… No I did not. So, I listened very, very carefully praying the guy-girl wouldn’t say anything about me being in the tree. I also felt my eyes widen as the b***h said something that I couldn’t quite understand, but was definitely mean, from her tone. Ugh, I hated her, and I didn’t even know my name. When the guy-girl opened it’s mouth, I was seriously afraid that he-she was going to say ‘Well, he just so happens to be in this tree…’ but instantly felt myself calm down when I heard the him-her point the crazed girls in the almost opposite direction of where I was… Seeing as, the opposite of where I was, was well… Down. When the she-it-he-guy-girl sat back up, I couldn’t help but stare at… her-it-he-him. Maybe it was because something was different? I just couldn’t put my finger on it. Then I noticed him-her looking at something on the ground, and being my nosey self, I followed her-his eyes downwards, where I saw her-his hat on the ground, standing out like blood stood out on snow. I looked back up at the guy-girl, and realized what was different. The guy-girl was definitely a girl-girl, and without the hat, she was definitely beautiful. Not in the way most guys would find attractive, but she was different. She had character. Her hair was the cross between straight and curly, and was this pretty light reddish brown colour. I gave her a small smile, and brushed my hair out of my no longer red face. But what she said next, definitely made my smile fade.
♫
- Okay, she either was really bad at talking to guys, or she really wanted me out of that tree. I sighed, and looked down. Trees were not my thing… No way could I get down without breaking something… Or everything. I looked back up and her and grimaced, noticing that her hazel eyes had a bit of brown in them. Then I gave her a sheepish smile and rubbed the back of my head. ”Yeah… I see that… But… Y’see… I um… Am hopeless?” I said, wondering just how stupid I sounded. I wouldn’t be surprised if she pushed out of the tree right then, just to be rid of me. Then I sighed and shook out my hair. ”Uh.. You know what… Nevermind, I can tell you’d rather be alone… Mind helping me out, before you go back to your business?” I asked, hoping I didn’t sound like a total… well… A total douche. After a few seconds I waved my hand around. ”Never mind, I’ll figure it out” I said, then looked to both sides of me, and frowned in frustration. I really was hopeless… I needed to get out more. With a frustrated groan, I looked back at the girl, who the other girl had called Pat. ”Um… Yeah, I’m hopeless with trees. However, I do love it up here… So… Mind if I just hang here… Y’know… Til I figure out a way of getting down without breaking myself, and without bothering you?... Although… I’m already doing that. s**t, sorry. Jeez, I need to stop babbling” I said, then blushed as I realized how absolutely insane I probably looked. I smiled sheepishly at her, again, then slid back a little farther onto the branch. I held out my hands in a manner that told her I meant no harm, then looked through the thick branches of light pink blossums, pulling one off, and spinning it between my fingers, as I waited for some genius way of getting down came to me. Not that I really wanted to. It didn’t look like the Pat girl planned on jumping me anytime soon… It was kind of refreshing to be near a girl who didn’t foam from the mouth at the sight of me.

I must've sounded like a real jerk, because the guy suddenly started babbling on and on about bothering me and wanting out of the tree and being hopeless. I wanted to butt in and say he wasn't really bothering me, but that if he didn't get outta here soon, Melissa would come back and she'd be out for blood. I opened my mouth to speak a few times, but gave up after a second. I just stared at him until he was done. When he finally quieted, I raised a brow. "Ok, first off, you're not exactly bothering me, since you haven't done anything to annoy me or make me mad. Second, if you really need help getting down, all you have to do is slowly slid backwards down that branch, your weight will bend the branch because its weak and you can slide right off. But by all means, hang out up here if you want," I replied, leaning back against the limb I was resting on. "Oh, and thirdly, yeah, I did come here to be alone, but is it really for you to assume that I'd rather be alone?" I looked at him as I said this last part, wondering about his reaction. He might get pissed and just jump down, or he could go quiet, like I'd hurt his feelings or something. But he did neither of those. Instead, he had this look on his face that said, 'Huh?'
✗
I laughed. That expression was just too much. I mean, this strange guy is chased around by hordes of screaming girls, yelps when I pull him up into the tree (like a girl!), and starts clinging to the branch for dear life. Ok, those were pretty funny, but this, now this is comedy. I covered my mouth with a hand, muffling my chuckles, but my grin is a mile wide. Ok, if this guy doesn't get pissed at that, then he is officially the strangest person I've had the pleasure to meet. I finally got around to stop laughing, so I put up a hand in apology, "Ah, sorry. That was rude. But you... you're like a babe in the woods, and, no offense, but that confused face is hilarious!" Although I'd just apologized for laughing, I couldn't help but to chuckle again. "Ok, for starters, you need out of this tree. Now. I know how stupid Melissa is, but my decoy was really lame, so even she will figure it out and that crowd of girls will come back after you. If you're stuck up in this tree, you're a goner." I flipped off of my branch, easily landing on the soft cherry blossoms on the ground, noiselessly. I stooped and picked up my hat again, putting it back on my head firmly before striding over to the branch where the guy was stuck. Luckily this branch was a weaker one. "Remember what I said earlier? About sliding backwards? Go ahead and do that now, and your feet will touch the ground after a minute." I watched him carefully as he slowly slid down the branch and finally onto solid ground. "There. Wipe yourself off, you're covered in cherry blossoms," I said, picking one out of his hair.
✗
I thought I could already hear angry shouting coming from the direction of the front kiosk near the other side of the pond. Already? That was quick... With a heavy sigh, I turned to the strange guy. "Well, looks like we're just in time. If you don't start bookin' it now, you're toast. But if you just run for you life through those trees," I pointed to the hidden pathway where he'd run through only about five minutes ago,"Then you'll reach the gates out of the park and you'll be safe. Use a disguise or whatever next time you go outside." I smiled and lowered my arm. I nodded to the stranger and waved a bit. "Well, I'm going out on the front lines, see if I can stall a bit. But you better run now. Or it'll all be for nothing." I turned my back from him and lightly jogged off to the tree line where I'd sent Melissa and the other girls. I knew I'd be getting hell for this, I wouldn't just be locked in the guy's room tomorrow... Oh well. I felt good, randomly helping out a stranger. It made me feel like a good person. Then, the angry snarls of the fangirls became louder, and louder, and louder, until finally Melissa and the others were stepping out of the trees and into the clearing. "Paaaaaaaaaaaat! You creep! You're going to pay for that! You think I'm some retard or something? How dare you." I stood me ground, looking bored. Melissa, although she said some pretty horrible things, was only a front. She hid behind those words. Now, had this been Jaquie... I would've taken the threats more seriously. Jaquie was plain scary. Well, at least I know what to expect from them. If I had no idea what I was doing, I'd think a bit more before helping poor innocent uber-hot-stranger-guys-who-can't-climb run away from mobs of girls. Oh well. Live and learn.

- I listened to the Pat chick talk, and felt fear instantly rise within me. The branch was weak… Was she crazy? Wouldn’t I like… snap it or something. I was going to say something, or ask if she could carry me down (although embarrassing, it was less frightening), but she just continued to talk. So, being polite, I shut my mind babble up, and listened. But as she spoke more, she got more and more confusing. Okay… So it was obvious that this girl was smart. It was also obvious that she was ten zillion times better at human interaction than I was… Seeing as I was terrible at human interaction. So, as I listened I tried to think of something witty and cute to say back, but when she finished, the only thing I could manage was a ‘huh?’ face, with a hint of ‘what the ********?’ in there something. She must have caught on to my lack of understanding, because just then she burst out into a huge fit of laughter. Of course, I just sat there watching her laugh her a** off. At me… Yup, and I couldn’t say anything about it, because anything I said would make me look more stupid. Gosh, she must think I’m so dense… I sighed, and shifted my position as she continued to laugh, looking up when I heard her talking. I was about to shrug off her apology. It wasn’t really that rude, considering the fact that I probably would have done the same thing if the rles had been reversed, but what she said then threw me off. Babe in the woods? I raised my eyebrow, but sighed and nodded when she told me to get out of the tree. I watched in silence as she got down herself, envious of how good she was at all this nature stuff, when the only thing I could do was throw a basket ball, kick a soccer ball, or roll across the front hall on a skateboard. Being me blows.
♪
- I knew I had to get out of the tree, because Pat was right. The girls were coming back, and I preferred my clothes not ripped to shreds. So, I took a deep breath, and slowly pushed myself backwards, closing my eyes tightly as I felt the branch beginning to lower. As it got closer to the ground, I began to slide by myself, and opened my eyes just in time to see the ground. I put my feet down firmly, the slowly stepped away from the branch, just in time to gasp as it went flying back to its original position. I frowned when Pat told me I was covered in cherry blossoms, but I was definitely happy to be on solid ground, so I just shrugged and began brushing the little pink flowers off myself, blushing slightly when she pulled one out of my hair. Pat was talking again as I pulled the last of the little blossoms off myself, and was giving me a small wave before turning. ”Wait!” I called, then jogged the couple steps she’d managed to get before I called to her. I smiled, and twirled the cherry blossom that was still in my hand between my fingers. Then I reaches up and tucked some of her thick hair behind her ear, before weaving the flower into it, so that it peaked out just above her ear. Then I gave her a small bow, and flipped my hair out of my eyes. ”Thanks for saving me from a pack of rabid girls” I said, then winked at her and put my sun glasses on, before I took a deep breath. I hopped off the ground, and then pushed myself into a full on sprint, racing as quietly as I could through the trees, still trying to hear what was happening between Pat and the girls. Even though I couldn’t hear any distinct words, I definitely heard some whining which made me smile, until I realized that I’d never even told Pat my name. It seemed weird to me that a stranger would help me out the way she was… If I ever saw her again, I’d give her more thanks then a little flower (that she just so happened to be surrounded in) and a slight bow.
♫
- I think at one point as I was flailing across the park, I heard people yell ‘there he is!’ and ‘geddim!’ but I never turned around to see if they were chasing me. I just ran, and ran. As I ran through the streets, I could feel my lungs burning in my chest, and I knew I was probably making some very unattractive noises, and faces, but I just wanted to get home. Home was safe. When I finally got on my street, I allowed myself to slow down, once again pressing my cold hands to my face so I could cool down before I went inside. I don’t think I could’ve sat through one of moms ‘I told you so’ lectures. I took huge gulping breathes and opened the gate to my backyard, closing it and locking it once I was in. Then I pressed my face against the cool siding of my house, and allowed myself to calm down a bit before I ventured inside. When my face finally un-reddened, and my breathing returned to normal, I took a deep breath and opened the gate again, before closing it behind me, and making my way to the front porch. I skipped up the stairs, and pushed the door to the house open. My mom was sitting on the couch, nibbling on one of her expensive fake nails. I smiled at her, and took off my sunglasses. ”Everything is fine mom. No one attacked me. Calm down. The outside world really isn’t such a scary place” I said, then went up the stairs and into my room, where I threw my sunglasses to the side, and went into the bathroom to take a hot shower. When I was done, I pulled on some jeans, a t-shirt and some random skate shoes that were laying beside my bed. I quickly put them on, then pulled on a sweater that smelt clean, and walked back out of my room. I made my way through the house, ignoring my mom when I passed her, and went straight to the back door. I shook out my damp hair, then opened the door and stepped out into the spacious backyard, making my way straight to the huge tree at the back of the yard. With a deep breath, I put my hand on the lowest branch, then put my other hand, and made sure they were secure before pulling myself up onto the branch. I stood unsteadily on the branch for a few minutes, then pulled myself up another few branches, until they were too small for me to sit on. I sat down, and smiled as I looked over my backyard, and a few other peoples yards, that I could easily see at the height I was at. Next time I saw Pat, I wouldn’t be so hopeless with trees. I’d get up and down by myself… That was, if I ever saw Pat again.

I managed to hold the mob off for a minute or two, but eventually Melissa and the others got tired of me and persisted in dodging past me onto the path back to the pond, where stranger-guy ran off. Well, he ran off, but not after leaving me with a cherry blossom tucked in my hair and bowing like a prince to me. I was still a bit red, nobody had ever done anything like that to me before. I mean, how do you respond to a handsome stranger bowing before you, anyway? Melissa shouted back some empty threats before disappearing into the trees with her mob, tailing strange-guy-that-looks-and-acts-like-a-prince. When they were out of sight and hearing range, there was a silence. I was alone now, back to the peace from before, but I wasn't in the mood for more blossom-gazing. Maybe tomorrow. I smiled as I walked back over to the cherry tree and looked around for my iPod. It probably fell out of my pocket when I leaned down to pull up stranger-guy. Yup, it did, because it was lying, still playing music, on the trampled pink petals beneath my original seat in the tree. I bent down and picked it up again, popping the buds into my ears and hummed along to "According to You" as I turned and made my way home.
✗
Of course, like the secret pathway to and from school and the park, I'd found a shortcut home. But this one I'd known about since forever. I followed the path from my cherry tree to the pond, then made a left when I passed the playground. There was a well-worn path there, and it lead right to the dead-end on my street. As I approached the end of the path, the familiar bent-up and rusty gate came into view. Lucky me, I'd already gotten my tetnis shot, so if I cut myself while climbing up the rusted chains I wouldn't have to be taken to the hospital and I wouldn't get busted for sneaking out to the park through private property (Yeah, apparently someone owns the land the path runs through and it isn't part of the park, so it's illegal for me to 'trespass'). I heaved myself over the fence as quietly as I could, sneakers landing on the hard pavement on the other side with a slap. Then I jogged down the street until I reached number 3241. I slowed to a walk and went up the steps to the front door, swinging open the old screen and entering. My mom heard me come in, and she called from the kitchen, "Patrice? That you? How's Lizzi today?" Whenever I don't get home immediately, my mom automatically assumes I'm at Lizzi's hanging out. "Yeah, it's me. Liz is fine, just like yesterday. Oh, can you do something for me, mom?" My mom shouted again,"Sure, hon." "Please don't call me Patrice." Ignoring the urge to investigate what my mom is cooking (smells so good...), I head upstairs to my room.
✗
I threw my iPod onto the bed and pulled off my hat. I needed a shower, because I was going over to Lizzi's (my mom didn't know why I was going again since I just 'came from there') to sleep over. We always did that. We only slept in our own rooms half of the year, literally. On certain days, I'd go to Lizzi's and on the other days, Lizzi'd come to mine. Things just worked out that way. I then go into my bathroom and start looking for the towels when I pause to look in the mirror. Haha, I told that one guy to wipe himself off, yet I'm covered in blossoms, too. I began plucking them off my clothes and out of my hair, but I paused at the beautiful pink blossom tucked by my ear. I didn't pulled it out, but just stared at it. I have to find a way to preserve this, I'm never going to get flowers from a guy ever again, so I need this as a memoir. I stepped back from the mirror and pulled it open from its hinge, revealing the medicine cabinet. In there were some toothpicks, floss, a travel case for a toothbrush, mouth rinse, tylenol, tiny plastic cups, and my mom's pair of silver star earrings. Perfect, I thought as I reached in and grabbed the cups and shut the cabinet closed. I unsheathed one cup, filled it almost to the top with lukewarm water, then gently picked the pink blossom from my hair and placed it in my palm. I stared at it for a moment longer, admiring it. The blossom was in perfect shape, had four creamy-pink petals, and smelled wonderful. I never wore make-up or perfume, but if someone could bottle the smell of cherry blossoms, I'd wear the sweet perfume anytime. I then carefully placed the flower delicately into the water-filled cup, allowing it to float on top. It wouldn't really preserve it, but the flower would last longer at least while in water. Then I continued getting ready for a shower.
✗
A hour later, I was pulling into Lizzi's drive. I didn't have to bother packing things whenever I slept over at her house, I came over so often all the things I needed were already here. I even had a regular seat at the dinner table. As I turned off the ignition and stepped out of my new-to-me toyota, I looked at Lizzi's large two-story suburbian-dream like house. There were small gardens in front of the windows, a nice and freshly mowed green lawn, and a stone pathway leading to the front door. It was so perfect it was disturbing, but I loved it. It was where Lizzi was, and without Lizzi at my side these past ten years, I have no idea how I would've survived bullies, creepy teachers, girl-stuff, and gross cafeteria food. If I hadn't had Lizzi, I think I might've killed myself at one point. But thank God I did have her, because not only would I be dead, I'd be very lonely. Lizzi doesn't mind my kick-a**/smart-a** attitude, or the fact that I can bring the school's quarter back to his knees, or the fact that I'd rather climb cherry trees than hang out at the mall. Actually, Lizzi did some stuff with me. Like, climb trees. Or belch the alphabet (Ok, I was reeeeeeally bored, and I'd just drank a coke. I don't normally do stuff like that. It's a one-time deal, I swear!). I headed up the stone pathway and knocked once on the pretty burgundy door to the perfect suburban home before letting myself in. I was welcome here not just by Lizzi, but everyone in her family as well. I was like the other daughter that lived around the corner instead of in their house. Lizzi was at the top of the stairs, about to answer the door, and she smiled at me. "Hey! You're back from the tree already? Normally you stay out until dark," she said, meeting me at the door. I smiled a bit, zoning out a bit as I remembered that strange guy again. He hadn't even left me his name. Oh, well. I'd probably never see him again anyway. "Well, something interesting happened at the park today..."

- II spent a few good hours in the trees, climbing each of them over and over again. I started on the smaller, easier trees first, then moved on to the harder ones. I was sitting in our huge oak tree when my dad came outside and raised an eyebrow at me. ”Come on Monkey Boy. Dinner is ready, and then we need to spend some time going over your list for the Wedding you’re playing on Friday” He said. I sighed and nodded, then waited until he went back inside before I shifted my position and swung down from the branch, landing swiftly on the ground. ”Sure is easier getting down, than it is getting up” I muttered to myself as I brushed myself off and crossed the yard. I opened the backdoor quietly and stepped into the house, welcoming the smell of whatever mom had made for dinner to enter my nose. With a smile, I walked into the kitchen and washed my hands thoroughly. Then I went into the dining room and took my usual spot at the table. Only seconds after I’d lifted my fork, mom started talking. ”Justin, I uh…” She started, then paused to sip her water. ”We realized that we’ve been very hard on you, by restricting you from doing normal teenage things. I understand that it’s hard for you, but you also have to understand that we do it for your safety” She said, once she had her thoughts together. ”I understand mom” I said quietly between bites. She smiled and patted my head. My dad just sighed and looked at me in a ‘let’s talk business’ way. ”Justin, can I ask you a question?” He said. I nodded and chewed my dinner slowly, before taking a long drink from my iced tea. ”Is it driving you mad to be locked up all day?” He asked me. I stared right into his brown eyes, which were a lot like mine, only his were wiser than mine. I could feel my lip start to tremble as I nodded, and refused to look at my mom. My dad sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. ”I’ve been thinking… Maybe we should enroll you in regular school. I was going to wait until I talked to your mother about it to tell you, but I think that it’s time we let you go a bit. Just because you’ve become successful, doesn’t mean we have to lock you up. You’re old enough to handle yourself” He said. I looked down at my plate, unable to say anything, although I could feel him looking at me, waiting for an answer. I could also feel my mom gaping at me, sending me silent messages not to listen to dad.
♪
- I took a few more bites before I finished my drink and looked up. ”I’ll think about it. May I be excused?” I asked quietly. My dad nodded, and my mom sighed. I stood up and walked from the room, wiping my hand across my cheek as I felt a tear roll down it. I knew my mom didn’t want me going to public school, but I really needed out of being stuck at home. I sighed and closed my eyes before walking up the stairs. But instead of going to my room, I continued going up, until I was in the attic, which had been converted into a music room. I walked straight to the piano, and sat down, resting my fingers on the keys for a bit. Then I pressed down and flinched as the small space was suddenly filled with the sound of the piano. I took a deep breath and positioned my fingers on the right spot, then played part of a song, that I wanted to work on, and repeated just the melody, before I finally sang along with it. ”So it’s up to you, and it’s up to me. And we meet in the middle, on our way back down to Earth…” I stopped when I heard footsteps coming up, and gave my dad a half smile when he walking in and sat on a little bench near the piano. ”Is mom mad?” I asked softly. My dad chuckled and nodded. ”Naturally. You’re her baby, and it’s hard for her to let you go. But she has to learn how to. Anyway, mind if I hide up here with you?” dad asked. I smiled and shook my head, then sighed and spun around so that I was facing him. ”Dad, although I love the idea, I don’t know if it’s such a good one. I mean… I don’t know how people will react and stuff, or how long it’ll take for them to get used to me. That kinda thing” I said. My dad grimaced and placed his hand on my shoulder. ”I know that Justin. But you can’t stay locked up in the house like a mole person. I found a really nice private, all boys school. You wont get attacked my screaming girls there. And since you’re out of district of the school, a school bus’ll pick you up, so you don’t even have to worry about getting mobbed to and from school” He said. I just laughed sadly and shook out my hair. ”But dad, what’s the point of going to school if there’s no girls?” I asked. My dad stared at me for a long time, waiting for me to say I was joking, and just shook his head when he realized I wasn’t.
♫
- For a while, neither of us said anything. Then my dad sighed and pulled a piece of paper from his pocket. ”Look, just let me know before 8, so that I can call the school. Since school only started a month ago, they’re willing to let you start a little late. But they need to know, so that we can go in and get you all applied and everything.” He said, then handed me the paper, which I looked over, and raised an eyebrow when I saw that it really had nothing to do with the school talk. It was just a list of songs. ”What is this?” I asked, gesturing to the paper. My dad sighed and took it back, looking it over a few times before he gave it back. ”List of songs the bride and groom want you to sing at the wedding. Along with some of your own songs, and some covers of your choice.” He explained. I nodded, and looked them over, my frown growing as I read through them again. ”What the s**t is Sugar Sugar?” I asked my dad, who just roared with laughter. I just stared at him, waiting for him to explain to me what was so funny. ”You know? sugar nah nah nah nah nah nah ah honey, honey nah nah nah nah nah nah you are my candy girl, and you got me wanting youuuuu!” My dad sang. Then he frowned and sighed. ”Sorry, I know you’re too hip to know that song” He said. ”That is so lame” ”No it’s not” he countered. ”Yes… Yes dad it is. I should write a song about cake. Even that would be a trillion times less stupid than that song” I said sarcastically. ”Give it a chance, Justin” Dad said. ”Don’t count on it. “ I said. ”Justin, you have to. Whatever they want you to play, you have to play. Be happy they aren’t asking you to sing ‘Sexy Back’, or something” He said. I laughed at this and leaned against the piano, ignoring the little blinging sounds it made when my back pressed against the keys. ”I’d rather sing that, than Sugar Sugar. Archie should’ve stuck to hooking up with Betty behind Veronicas back. Song writing didn’t seem to work out too well for him” I said, rolling my eyes as my dad began to laugh. ”Good one. Just work on these, then add some things you want to play onto it, and show me the list. The bride also said that she wanted you to play a few songs before the couple dance, just so that people can get rid of some of their energy from sitting during the service. She suggested you play One Time first” he said. I nodded and looked over the list once more, before I leaned over the piano keys to my laptop. I quickly googled the Lyrics, chords and sheet music for all the songs on the list, then printed them out and began working on getting them good enough to perform.

Time spent at Lizzi's house was always fun. We never ran out of things to talk about. So even though I didn't want to bring up the subject of me getting locked into the restroom earlier in the day we still had fun. I told her about my encounter with that strange guy, and how Melissa threw a fit like a two year old about my trick. I laughed as I remembered her bunched up face. Melissa looks so ugly when she's mad, which is often. Lizzi and I sometimes have contests to see who can imitate her the best. Lizzi wins, every time. When I told her about the flower the stranger had put in my hair, her eyes grew wide. "Aw! That's so sweet of him! Did you get his name or anything? Maybe his number?" I gave her a funny look. "Uh- no. Nobody would want to give me their name or number after seeing those monkey antics in the tree. Oh, and he's up to his neck in girls. One tomboy isn't going to lure him from that swarm. Besides, I probably won't see him again, anyway." I fiddled with the sleeve of the jacket as I spoke, because I didn't like facing this harsh reality every day. "Hey, you don't know that. Don't rule yourself out of the running when the race has just started!" she said with a huff, placing a firm and encouraging hand on my shoulder. I'd love to actually believe what she said, but I just couldn't. If I let myself hope for anything, anything at all, I'd eventually be crushed. Because things like that, they just don't happen to me. They happened to Melissa, Jaqui, Lizzi even. Lizzi is hands-down no-buts-about-it the belle of our school. She's got this calming and soothing air about her, and she's beautiful in a gentle way. Although she isn't the first to be spotted in a crowd, or the kind of girl who is scouted on the street by modeling agencies, she's beautiful in her own way. The kind of way where she doesn't need makeup to look stunning. And Lizzi is the coolest friend anyone could ever dream of having, so I at least knew she wasn't lying to me for courtesy about it. What would I do without her?

Lizzi didn't bug me about it for the rest of the night except to tell me to expect that she'd go snooping around my house sometime and look for the blossom. She'd probably find it, too. Sometimes I think I know her house better than she does and she knows mine better than I do, because when we were little and we'd play hide-and-seek, we could never find each other when we were at our own houses. Lizzi would find my flower in the little nook behind the laundry room door where I'd hidden it in about four hours maybe. She is that good. Afterwards, we just hung out, played video games, watched a movie (Alvin and the Chipmunks- I have to admit, I thought it was kinda cool). The usual. Sometimes we'd go outside and do some stargazing, but it had rained a few days ago and her lawn was still wet. Lizzi's dad, Mr. Monroe, came home late that day, so we had dinner about thirty minutes later than usual. The mashed potatoes were kinda cold by then, but it didn't matter. Mrs. Monroe (I can call her Mrs. Kelly) made the best mashed potatoes in the world, so they were like heaven even when cold. As Mrs. Kelly was setting the table, Mr. Monroe took his usual seat at the head. Lizzi and I filed in after him, smelling the wonderful scent of the fried chicken that was finally resting on the special serving dish in the center of the table. After we took our seats, we still had to wait for Lizzi's younger brother, Tim, to join before digging in (some weird tradition. I never asked.) When we finally heard him rumbling down the stairs, we looked to the door and in Tim burst, half dressed in a tux and a little black bowtie that needed to be adjusted was hanging around his neck. We stared at him for a second, unsure how to respond. "Um, Tim? Why exactly are you wearing a tux to the dinner table?" Tm glanced to me and gave me a blank look. "Well, I need to make sure it fits. I have to wear it on Friday to Sandy's wedding. Duh." It was really quiet for a moment as I took that time to process what he'd said. "Sandy's getting married?"

Tim made this chagrined face, like he'd just said something he shouldn't have. "Wait, for real? The wedding is on Friday? Why haven't I heard about this?" I asked turning to each member of my family-by-heart. They were all horrible secret-keepers, so I'm surprised I hadn't found out something was up sooner. "W-well, Sandy wants you to wear a dress, and... you don't like dresses so... They wanted to tell you at the last minute so you couldn't back out of it," Mr. Monroe replied gruffly, staring at the chicken instead of looking at me. My sister Sandra, or Sandy, is like my exact opposite. She loves all things girlish and cute, and is so adorable at times I think she'd be a better younger sister than an older one. She's also extremely beautiful, so its no wonder she's getting married at only twenty one. I knew Sandy was getting married, but I wasn't told any info as to the wheres and whens. I had no idea it would be this soon, either! My mom and I had only just been told about her engagement to Jason a month ago. So, this was waaaaaaaaay too soon to even be worrying about the wedding. But, as usual, my sis threw my a loop, and was exploiting her privileges as bride to force me into a gorgeous dress that would be ruined because I look horrible in them and because I'd probably rip it by accident or get it dirty. But Sandra is the bride, and its her wedding, so... Ugh. I have to sacrifice for her happiness sometimes. Who knows? One day I may need a favor from her as well.

After dinner (which was very quiet, probably because the entire family was feeling awkward and guilty for hiding something from me), Lizzi and I ran upstairs to her bedroom to hang out for the rest of the night. Of course, Lizzi ran into her closet and pulled out her outfit she'd had already picked out for Sandy's wedding."Hey, why do you have to show me now? Won't I see it at the wedding on Friday?" Lizzi appeared from behind her closet door with a frown. "Well, I've had this outfit for a while, and I've been waiting to show it to you, so you just be a good girl and sit there and look at it." I rolled my eyes and flopped onto her bed, staring at the space where she'd disappeared again. She came out a minute later, looking absolutely stunning in this gorgeous light purple halter dress. She also wore these killer heels, making her normally short stature look more lady-like. I gasped. "What? Is it weird?" she figdetted nervously. I was taken aback for a second,"Weird? No! You look fabulous! Like a model, Lizzi!" Lizzi smiled in her gentle way and laughed. God, I envy her sometimes. I wish I could pull off stunning outfits like she could, or have a laugh that rang in your ears like bells, or act cute and mature like she could. You know, like a girl should be. But I couldn't really change myself, I was already comfy in my down-to-earth rugged shorts and worn-out skating shoes. No way was I trading them in for fancy dresses and killer heels, no matter how badly I wanted to be girly. It just wasn't going to happen. Lizzi went back into the closet to change into pjs, and I pulled out something from her drawer and changed as well. We sat down beside each other on her bed and watched her tv until we fell asleep.
