Life is about trusting your feelings and taking chances, losing and finding happiness

Emma smiled at him. “You’ll have time to prepare yourself then.” She shook her head. She looked outside again. “The weather sure changes fast here, doesn’t it.” A comment on the weather, rather predictable train to go to when trying to entertain conversation. She glanced back at him, wondering if the ride back would be as boring as the ride to the town. She pulled her coat tighter around her, for not only had the clouds come in, but a chill with it. It was after all late November now.

“Do you think we shall have snow soon?” She pondered aloud. Or would it just rain here, like it normally did back at Fairfax. Dreary winters there, gloom and rain and cold all the time, Emma hated this time of the year most because of that. Reminded her of death. She shivered at the thought. “You do get snow here, yes?” She decided to ask.

He was slightly glad for the change in topic, though he was sure that he'd fret over it some more once they returned home. "Snow? Yes, it snows. Last year was lighter though; I would say we're due for a storm." Burton hoped that it wouldn't be too soon. He needed a few more good lightning storms before the cold fully arrived, or else he would need to halt his experiments until the summer. He wish he'd started earlier in the year.

“Hmmm…” She starred out the window, letting the carriage fall into silence. A large snow storm wouldn’t be bad, in fact it would wonderful! She smiled. So far this job was working out okay. Living in such a large house, even if the head of the house was rather reserved, the others were kind and friendly. A promise of snow and balls, this place was far better than living at Cross Academy.

“A Christmas Ball would be delightful…” she mused, returning to the latter subject. “Wouldn’t you say Mr. DeTamble. It’d really be the perfect setting.” She cocked her head to look at him without turning her body. Already she could see her breath in the air.

Burton drew a deep breath in and let it out slowly. He imagined that the girl would waste no time getting the others excited for the possibility of such an event. Once Ms. Weatherbee got wind of it she likely wouldn't let it go. She had thoroughly enjoyed the days of his parents' annual balls. He knew she wouldn't pressure him into consenting but she would certainly make a deal of pouting if he didn't.

"I will consider it," he responded, though he knew it was probably inevitable.

Emma snorted softly, with an undertone of a giggle in it, shrugging. This man really did not give her much in the ways of small talk. She decided to let it go, drop the subject of the ball. Well, for that matter, forget talking for the rest of the ride. Emma returned to watching the scenery outside, trying not to feel awkward in the silence that fell between the two of them. The rabbits made soft little noises, the creak of the carriage as it crossed over roots and stones, the sound of the horses hooves, that was all that filled the noiselessness. The trees that lead up to the mansion filled her window, going by serenely, beginning to wave in the breeze that was picking up momentum. Emma’s fingers were beginning to feel the cold and complained, as she pressed them into tight balls to protect them.

He glanced sideways at her when he thought he heard her scoff, but shrugged it off. They fell into a silence for a while and finally arrived at the manor. Mr. Harpshire greeted them where the carriage stopped and helped carry some of their things. They trekked up the short walkway and made it into the house as it started to sprinkle freezing rain. As it fell it looked slightly like snow but melted immediately upon landing.

Once they were inside and his outerwear was hung up with his hat, Burton began stacking his books on top of the cage in a way that would be easy to carry up the stairs. Ms. Weatherbee found him in the foyer and commented on the rabbits. He responded that he'd taken an interest in biology and genetics and intended to breed them. It was partly true.

He stood carefully with the load. "Thank you for your assistance today Miss Emma," he said and turned to head upstairs.

Emma waited patiently as Mr. DeTamble got out of the carriage, reaching to hand the days wares to Mr. Harpshire but Mr. DeTamble began to take them himself. Emma came out of the carriage as it started to rain, or snow. She held out her bare hand to catch a small, mushy flake, which melting upon touching her warm skin. Emma smiled, looking up at the sky, before regaining composure and followed the group in.

She took her bonnet off, letting it fall behind her, the strings holding it loosely around her neck. Ms. Weatherbee came in, fussing in her motherly way. Emma folded her hands, hoping Mr. DeTamble would mention the ball. To her slight disappointment he began to head up the stairs before stopping and turning to her. "Thank you for your assistance today Miss Emma," he extended his gratitude while balancing his load.

“It was a pleasure.” She dipped her head respectfully to his back as he was already on the move. She wistfully watched him till he disappeared in the darkness of the house.

“Come into the kitchen, it’s much warmer there.” Ms. Weatherbee took Emma’s hands, leading her away. “Oh! Your hands are icicles!” She exclaimed, “Go and warm them up and then help me finish up here.” She let her go. “Mean while, tell me how the town was.” Emma smiled at the elderly ladies obvious desire of news and gossip.

“There’s not much to say.” Emma disappointed the hungry woman. She began to take off her coat, stretching her fingers in an attempt to regain blood flow. “I did meet a Mr. and Mrs. Etheridge.”

Ms. Weatherbee had turned to pour a cup of hot tea for the young woman but she paused. "Etheridge, hmm?" she remarked. Her expression was wary. "How were they? Did they have much to say?" she asked. She finished pouring the cup and gave it to Emma, gesturing for her to sit in a nearby chair

“No, not much.” Emma answered, taking off her coat. She placed it on the pegs that were found along the wall towards the back door, placing with it her bonnet. “They remarked on how long it had been since they had news of Mr. DeTamble. And suggested he host a ball… Thank you.” She took the cup of tea from Ms. Weatherbee, taking a tentive sip before setting it down on the counter. It’s heat was blistering to her cold fingers.

"A ball?" Ms. Weatherbee repeated, thin eyebrows rising. "Hmmmm..." She turned to a wash basin and started setting dishes on a towel to be dried, making intrigued noises. "I see I see I see....And how did Master DeTamble respond to this idea?" she asked Emma.

Emma shrugged, taking another sip of her tea before answering. “He did not say. Or rather he said he’d think it over.” She moved to leaned Ms. Weatherbee a hand. “When was the last time this place seen any festivity and life any way?” She asked, drying a plant before setting it down on the counter.

Ms. Weatherbee let out a slow sigh and lifted her eyes in a contemplative way. "I believe that the last time we had a real celebration....was Master Burton's engagement party, just before his father passed. It was a smaller event just for closer friends, but before that was a spring ball we put on for the whole valley. It was quite a night!" she recalled with cheerful longing. "Oh I would so love to have another but I think that it would take quite the effort to convince Master Burton to approve it."

“The whole valley?” Emma was astonished, trying to imagine the house so filled. From what she had seen of the house, she couldn’t fathom it, not really. This house was so drained of life, even light and sun had no effect. She shook her head, taking another plate and drying it before stacking it on the other. She frowned. There had to be a way to convince Mr. DeTamble. “What about a Christmas ball?” Emma thought aloud.

"A Christmas ball sounds like a marvelous idea," Ms. Weatherbee replied, wiping down the last dish.

"A ball?" Behind them came two voices exclaiming in unison. Mary and Lizzy had just entered the room and were now grinning excitedly.

"I must tell Josiah!" Mary exclaimed and ran for the stables.

"Mary-" Ms. Weatherbee called, but the girl was already gone. She shook her head.

"Are we really having a ball?" Lizzy asked.

"It was an idea," she responded simply.

Emma smiled. Mission achieved... Mr. DeTamble possibly couldn't say no now... unless he did.... She wiped away the thought as she cleaned the counter top. It didn't really matter either way. It would just be all for fun.

Ms. Weatherbee had dinner all ready, a pot of stew warm over the happy fire and delicious bread covered by a towel filled the room with smells of good cooking. The busy woman even had cleaned the kitchen up, Emma was not needed here. "Is there any other work that needs tending?" Emma asked, wringing out the cloth she had been using.

"Hmm.... there is some dusting in the main room I have not yet gotten to today." Ms. Weatherbee suggested. "And when you are done with that how about tea and you can tell me everything about town." Emma couldn't refuse the kindly lady, though as she had told her before, there wasn't much to tell.
