"Make a wish... it'll be your last"

"I'm sure we can find some sort of use for you, if you wanted to stick around. If you charm me enough I might even put in a good word for you." Nick just had to get another tease in while he could. He turned to look over his shoulder as he pulled out of the park, and soon they were back on the main road again. A few of the streets look familiar but soon he was turning down streets she might not have known. Nick himself almost went this way for business. A quick glance at the time could have told them they were not late to their meeting but Nick decided to speed anyways. "Are any of your men checking out the goods today or did they just send you out?" he asked. Most people didn't like to go alone in deals like this. Being a lone girl in a room full of thugs could make anyone a bit nervous. After driving for a bit longer Nicholas pilled into the warehouse where the deal was going to happen.

A few cars already dotted the parking lot. While they weren't the first people here they likely would not to be the last either. Perfect timing, he thought as he brought the car to a stop. His cell phone ran just as the hum of the engine stopped. Nicholas let this phone play its tune while he looked at the caller a bit curiously. The name Vince was up on the screen. Hmm, he thought as he decided not to answer it right way. Vince must have wanted to talk to him before the deal happened.

don't you owe that to me?"

Maria smiled and laughed softly, she wondered wither Nick was like with all the women who walked into his life. Her thoughts would guess that he was, he was a lady man, but yet a man's man, the one who would get down to business when it was time. Soon she would see more of the business side of Nick, she wondered how much it would change. "Actually it's just me... a little strange, but the meeting date came so fast, and the other boys had previous engagements," Maria explained she shrugged a little a slight frown. The idea of going in on her own wasn't always the smartest but it was hers, if for some reason something went wrong it would only be her in there no one else.

She watched the streets he turned down, making mental notes on how far away they were heading and where abouts they were going. When they drove in to the parking lot she noted how many cars were there, a few, but more were to come she was sure. The wasn't even shut off before Nick's phone started to ring, the way he had looked at it she guessed business... maybe Vince himself? "I think I noticed Bruno's car," Maria said with a smile, "I'll leave you for some privacy to answer that. Thanks again for the lift and the afternoon in the park."

Maria got up out of the car taking her purse with her and started to walk over to one of the black cars, and for sure enough out came Bruno from the back carrying the black suit case. "How was your afternoon?" Bruno asked as he met up with her so the two could talk. "Fine," she said taking in a deep breath looking over at the warehouse, she had seen pictures of it, seen floor plans, and knew half of the stuff that typically happened in it... most of it illegal of course. "You ready for this?" Bruno asked a raised eyebrow, it was apparent that he was no longer nervous about the situation at all and was back in his grove. "I can't wait till I'm back in the hotel room on that big bed with fluffy sheets so I can get a good nights sleep," she joked with him giving a laugh lightening her mood. Bruno himself gave a bit of a laugh and nodded, "That indeed sounds good. Come on, I'll walk you inside."

"It was my pleasure," Nick said as he watched the girl leave his car curiously. Nickolas felt something strange when she left his car and headed towards Bruno. Was that a hint of not wanting to share? He wanted to keep eye on her longer but his phone keep on playing its song reminding me that someone wanted to talk.

"Hey, I'm right outside. Do you want me to come in?" Nick ran his fingers along the steering wheel cover until a lose thread came free. He played with the small string for a moment as he listened to the Vince on the other end.

"Where you are is fine. I wanted to know what your feel was on that girl new. You know how I dislike new people and I want to make sure this deal with solid. The weapons are not here yet and I will call this whole deal off if she is a fake. Capisce?"

"Absolutely Sir. To be perfectly honest with you I can not read her true goals. You might want to get into her past more if we do more deals with her. If she is going to go sideways it is not going to be on this deal," Nickolas replied pulled that lose string. He then looked over to Bruno and Maria almost in thought. Vince continued to talk for a moment longer and then they both hung up. "What are you intentions.." he said to an empty car.

Bruno lead the way as the two of them entered the building, the front of the building more of a place where some officers were, and places for people to check in, Maria would notice the two men standing by the big double doors which lead to the big open space room where things were actually stored. As they made their way to the doors, one of the men would push his jacked back and rest his hands on his hips, just far enough to allow Maria to see the gun, she would only politely smile. All it was, was a scare tacit, a way to show that she was no longer the boss as she entered the room... it was something she did all the time when leading a suspect to the bull pen for interrogation, yet it still had the same chilling effect on her.

Entering the large area her heels would start to click on the cement flooring as the walked to the back of the room where another few men stood around a table. The room was high ceilings, and had high windows to allow natural light in, to try and blend with the big lights hanging high over their heads. Crates would be found in almost everywhere in the room, it was really a mystery on what was actually in it, everything from household products to drugs were Maria's guess.

"Bruno... when did you start hanging out with the younger ladies?" One of the men joked as the two neared the table. Bruno laughed as Maria smiled politely, "This is Maria Romano, she's a friend of the family from New York." Bruno would explain, she was certain the men already knew the information... maybe they were trying to catch Bruno in a lie? It didn't matter because Bruno pulled it off flawlessly. "Where's Vince?" Bruno would ask as they stopped in front of the table. Maria took a closer look at the gentlemen that stood before her, they looked familiar, most likely from photo's taken of Vince and his men, yet names were sometimes hard to come by. "Should be here soon," he said with a shrug, not worried like he had all the time in the world.

Nick’s hunter eyes watched as Bruno and Maria walked into the building. He was fairly comfortable with the meeting to take place here. It was a simi-common play to do business. After wasting of what he felt was enough time he got out of the car and walked into the building as well. Then stopped at the counter where people generally checked in. There was a girl who had half way through her twenties at the receptionist desk. The blonde haired girl sat there looking down at the news paper as she twirled her golden hair. “Now what did I tell you about paying attention,” Nick said once he was leaning over the counter. The women jumped at least two inches out of her seat. “Oh my god, Nicholas! You scared me!” she exclaimed with her hand over her heart. Nick smiled a bit then reached down to tap on her news paper. “At least you half listened to me and got rid of those magazines,” he replied before turning to lean his back to the counter. Eyes fixed on the glass doors that lead outside. It was not long before Vince pulled up in his car. Equally as nice as his own car except in a different way. Vince’s car was more classic and came with his own driver. Another car pulled up next Vince a van to be exact. Nick waited until Bruno walked inside the building. The men in the van stood outside waiting like guards. With very little words being exchanged Nick and the mod boss wanted into the room that Bruno, Maria and other workers were waiting. “Afternoon everyone,” Vince said the common greeting in a tough voice. Nickolas followed Vince around the room a bit like a faith loyal member who almost looked like part of the family. “Let us get down to business shall we?” Vince asked as Nicholas stayed silent.

Maria stood silent there in the room of men, it was obviuse that if she were to step out of line things could go very wrong. Burno would stay just as quite but more of a relaxed manner till one of the bulker men asked Bruno about a baseball game. The atmospher felt ever so slightly lighter as the two men continued there chat but it was suddenly dropped as soon as the door behind Maria opened. Looking softly over her shoulder she would only comfirm what she already knew, Vince was coming in with Nick right behind him. It was obviuse in this position that Nick was right hand man, one who Vince trusted very much.

Maria would stay silent. She didn't need to be inturpting the man, or trying to push her way in, in fact she would allow Bruno to let her in to talk. It was a simple way to show her respect, outsiders werent looked high upon. "Afternoon Vince," Bruno finally broke the silence, making the daring move to open up the subject. "This is mainly Miss Romano deal... Maria?" Bruno asked looking over, giving her way in. "Afternoon," she said giving her head a slight tip in the direction of Vince. "I don't wish to waste anyones time here," she simply put wearing the soft polite smile, "I'm sure you know where were here, I have fifty thousand dollars here today in cash I'm willing to give you for some of your finiest wepondry, delivered to a port in New York." Maria simply put, "Money is not a factor, our last suplier screwed us and well... we would be better with toy water guns if truth be known, so we need the wepons."

Her voice had managed to stay even, her body relaxed, it could even be argued that Maria looked as she belonged. It was on the inside she felt like jello, wondering if she said too much, not enough. Wondering if he was going to shut her down cold, or notice something wasn't right about her. It didn't matter what was done was done and now she had to wait, pray that he would accept, pray that she would walk out of the building instead of being carried away in a body bag.

It was Nick’s job to study everyone carefully and to basically smell a lie on someone. He looked almost harshly at Maria trying to figure out the situation. As Maria spoke about water guns he couldn’t help but picture a hit team running around with water pistols and super soakers like they were real. The comment amused him but he didn’t let it show. He did not want Maria being here to be a ruse. They really would do horrible things to do if she went against Vince. Even though he did not want to see harm fall upon the girl he also had his own agenda and his own life to protect. Just because Nick was slightly fond of her did that mean that feeling went both ways. None of the men in this room where innocent, they all had blood on their hands and there was plenty of people out there that wanted to see them pay.
Bruno looked Maria square in the eyes as if to scare her down. Maria was not a child but she was fairly young in comparison to the experienced boss. He turned his head to Nick as if to get his feel of things. Nicholas simply nodded once. This seemed to satisfy Vince and he turned back to speak. “All right, we can deal,” he waved to fingers at one of his men who left the room.
That man walked outside to the van to meet with the others. “He’s ready. Let’s bring one of the crates in.” Even through everyone in the building couldn’t see this all taking place if they could have it would have been obvious that everyone was traded to do a specific job. The original man and another mobster each took a side of a crate and walked it back into the building. They set the heavy crate on the ground, it clearly wasn’t fifty thousand dollars worth but it still a pretty big sample. Nicholas walked over to the crate and couched down to the locks of the box. He flipped the lid open to reveal assault rifles. Vince spoke up again, “So Miss Bradford let us see some of that money. We don’t want to be
          screwed either.”

The few seconds of silence seamed to continue to drag on, and on. Maria's eyes would stay focuse on Vince though, it was him she was dealing with. It was him who her main focus was on. However she could feel all the other eyes in the room watching her, judging her, getting a reading off of her. It was only when Vince turned to look at Nick would her eyes fallow, seeing Nick give a nod was what then set everyone in motion. It automatic made her curious on what made Nick so important, it seamed the Vince trusted him with his life.

None of it mattered at that point because within moments a crate was being brought in where Nick himself went and opened the top revieling a fair sample size of the materials. "Of course," Maria would softly say looking over at Bruno where he wasted no time in lifting the briefcase and opening it up for them to see the bills with a vinela envelope laying ontop. "Fifty thousand cash as I promised, with even instuctions on what to deliever," Maria explained as she walked over to the crate and looked down inside of it. Slowly she reached down and picked up one of the heavier duty guns, and started to inspect it, first checking to ensure the chamber was indeed empty. Her skills with the larger guns were not top notch but she did know enough on how they were assembled and used. Slowly she started to work at the gun desembling parts of it to do a through inspection of the new 'toy' before putting it back together. They were good. Very well made, even she couldn't hid how empressed she was with them.

"I do believe these would do very nicely," Maria finally told him, verbaly agreeing to the deal in her own way. "What kind of deal could you give me for amunition?" Maria asked in a light tone, it wasn't something that she really needed but it would show her intrest in continuing to do business with him, almost saying 'hey if your guns are this good, what else do you have?'. Reaching down she place the gun back in it's spot allowing for the box to be closed again, securing the contants.

"Haha!" Vince said as he broke into a laugh, "One thing at a time my dear." That wasn't a yes but it wasn't a no either. "Are you planning a war that you are going to need a lot of ammo for? Wouldn't want these weapons to-- what is the saying," Vince went on and leaned into another one of his men like he was unsure, "be used for evil." Making a good deal always made Vince feel better. He knew this wasn't a string at least it wasn't yet because the coppers were not pulling up. His men were constantly watching this area. Plus, technically he permits on all the guns he had showed the girl. Mobsters are make clean money too. Of course the whole deal wasn't on the deal but so far he was safe. "We can meet again if you need ammo. I'm sure we can work something out. As for these crates I'll have my men deliver them to wherever you want."

A few of Vince's men started to get restless they were not the type who liked to stand around much. Nicholas and Vince seemed the most at ease. Nick however did grow a little bit tiresome of the gun that was still in his hands. The gun had been gun the most danger it could have done was make a dent in the floor. The man played around with the gun a little, twirling it around slightly before placing it carefully make it its crate. Even through it wasn't loaded Nicholas still treated it with the amount of respect it deserved. Nick has stayed follow of most of the exchange and to be honest he often didn't like to be a main figure in these types of things. He perfered to be the type of antrhopoist who simply watched instead of being a part of the group. He moved around to another one of Vince's workers and started to chit chat a little. The two were talking hushed and out of the line of slight so it was hard to figure out what exactly they were going on about.

"So what are you and Bruno's plans now?" Vince asked continuing the conversation.

Maria smiled and gave even a soft laugh to his question, taking it in light humour. “No, no war, just standing our grounds… why make trouble when it’s not needed?” Maria asked her tone was still light. It was now more or less just pleasantries, the main deal of business was done and he only intention now was to make sure things were kept light and airy, showing she was friend not foe. “But you are right, another day,” Maria brushed off, it once again wasn’t something she actually needed, but it was to throw out a bone, to show she would be interested in more business.

Soft chit chat would start to come into the room from a few of them, she couldn’t help but notice one of them was Nick. For some reason it slightly worried her… Nick seemed to be a man who had a bit of power behind him, and not being able to hear the conversation that was happening near her made her wonder what it was about. Yet it didn’t really matter at that moment she guessed, Vince had once again returned his attention to her, back to more pleasantries of asking what was next. “To be honest a relaxing evening I hope,” Maria continued smiling, clearly feeling better now the main bit of business had gone down. “It’s been a long day for me with the travel, you would think for how much you pay for a plane ticket you would get more out of it,” She continued on a smile on her face.

Bruno stepped in with a slight chuckle as he closed up the briefcase and passed it over to one of Vince’s men who had been bouncing around as if begging for something to do. “I’ve actually going to suggest drinks, you should go out see some of the city while you’re here,” Bruno continued taking a step close to Maria and Vince to ensure he was part of the conversation. “That is unless you’re too tired?” Bruno asked shrugging his shoulder slightly. “Oh… I suppose one wouldn’t hurt,” Maria answered and in all honesty she could have used one, “Would you like to join us Mr. Rizzo?” Maria asked once again for pleasantries she highly doubted that he would accepted, but she was sure she could swing it either way.

Nicholas laughed a bit the type of chuckle that one generally heard a pool halls and bars. “Oh you know it!” he said his voice going louder. The man he was talking to seemed just as amused. “You know his real tell don’t ya?” Nick continued while his follower mobster shook his head and waited for an answer like a school child. “His tell is-“mid-sentence he stopped and turned his attention to Maria’s question. He has only been paying half attention to their conversation so it keep him a moment to figure out what he was invited to join them for. In company of such men as himself one should be careful what you include yourself in. The night could end up killing you, resulting in you being handcuffed or having a great night out. Nick only liked two of those three options. “Drinks sound nice,” he said putting some empathize on the word “drinks” just in case. Nick wondered if the offer was because she enjoyed their time at the park or if she was just being former. Either way, Nick never minded feeding what might become alcoholism. The man who has originally been talking to him tried to get his attention again like a puppy who had stopped being played with. “So what’s the trick?” he asked. Nick turned his head around and smiled enjoying keeping his little secret to himself.

Maria would only smile, listening to Nick, the way he was talking it a appeared he had some type of boyish charm to him. A man’s man with the other fellow he was talking to yet… there was playfulness to it. “Sounds good,” Bruno would step in, “We’ll meet up with you down at Lakeviews.” Bruno continued as he gestured for Maria that it was time to get out, getting out while the atmosphere was high sounded like an excellent plan for her. “It was a pleasure to do business with you,” Maria would say reaching out her hand to Vince for the two of them to shake, once again all in the name of pleasures. It was only after the hand shake would Bruno escort her out of the room, leaving the light chit-chat of men and some orders being barked around on what to do next with the shipment.

As the excited out of the building Bruno gave his good nights to a pretty blond sitting behind the counter which Maria had only half noticed coming in. It was apparent now that she was overly more than just a little worried about the deal. Now it was alright, the hardest one was the first one and she had done her part better yet, she was walking out alive rather than in a body bag. Stepping out into the cooling air Maria’s shoulders managed to drop slightly and she released a breath she hadn’t noticed she was holding, Bruno chuckled ever so slightly. “I thought you said you’ve done this before,” Bruno question obviously a little amused with the situation, it was even ironic on how a few hours earlier it was him who’s stomach was in knots. “I have,” Maria defended, “Just never done it this isolated before… I usually have at least one partner outside.”

“I suppose that’s a good enough reason,” Bruno shrugged as they reached the car, him opening the door for her to slid into then closing it for her. Once again, the royal treatment was forgin to her but something she could get use to. Quickly she got out her cell and started to type ‘Looks like I’ll be staying in Chicago for a few more days… hoping more. Call tonight.’ And in a few second the text was sent to her co-worker Richard who would be sitting in an office working late as usual. “So… Lakeviews?” Maria asked as Bruno finally took set in the back with her, it was only minutes later that Bruno’s driver would start the car and start to drive. “Nice place,” Bruno finally answered checking his own cell phone as well, checking for missed calls maybe. “We’ll take the long way to get there… allow you to see more of the city… let’s hope Vince gives the go for more business… maybe he’ll take an interest in your style and approach. Takes guts for someone to do a solo run… especially a women.”

“That was the plan,” Maria admitted, brushing back her hair with her hand. Bruno sat there for a moment and thought before he continued, “What if he doesn’t? Where does that leave me?” “Same place as before,” Maria answered looking over at him, “You’ll get what I promised… I’ll be going back home in a few days if he doesn’t offer anything more… and I’ll contact you after that holding up my end.” Maria sat back and looked out the window, she didn’t wish to say any more than that. Bruno had promised his driver was a good man, but if too much was said and the driver was able to piece things together both Bruno and her were dead. Maria had promised Bruno relocation services for his paperwork dealing with the organized crime, his testimony, and a way for her in. It was considered a fair trade as far as she was concern compared to what Bruno had done in his life time, normally jail time was always served. “Alright… I find that fair,” Bruno said, both of them knowing that was an understatement.

"Make a wish... it'll be your last"

The crowd quickly broke up soon after Maria and Bruno left. There was no business left to be had so everyone decided to move one with their day. Nickolas got caught up talking to someone while Vince and his followers went out the front door. The receptionist sat quietly has they left. Nick noticed that Vince had managed to leave before he got the chance to talk to him. Looked like he was going to be a bit late on those that offer for drinks. Nicholas excused himself the conversation. It was not as important as the one he needed to have with Vince. As he walked out he winked to the receptionist. A rose color appeared on her face as she bashfully looked down at some papers. Nick wondered what did she did most of her day.

The mob bosses car was already gone but that wasn’t much of a concern. Nicholas got into his car and drove to what could be almost considered as their head quarters. He pulled into the parking lot and lingered in the car a moment even after it had been turned off. Nick dug into his pocket and found his wallet. He opened the billfold and stared at something in one of its sleeves. A sigh escaped his mouth and he suddenly and hastily went inside.

You would think a building like this would have been filled with men that were wanted by the police. To be honest very few of them had warrants. Almost all of them had a record of some sort. Nick walked with ease though this den of thieves. The front rooms did not make this place look shady. Most people were hanging out and drinking. Nick has a look of determination on his face as he strolled right up to the boss’s office.

“Ahh, Nicholas,” Vince said looking up from his desk, “Close the door.”

He did as directed and closed the door by backing up into it. Vince never had the conversation with a door open, well a serious one that is. There were two chairs in front of Vince’s desk but Nicholas didn’t take a seat. “I think that sale went pretty well,” Nicholas commented.

“Yes I do too,” Vince said and looking back down at paperwork. He was not really paying all the much attention to the man.

“So are you done with my services then?”

Vince looked up at Nicholas with a puzzled look on his face. “Of course not. Our business with Ms. Bradford is not done yet. You yourself said that she might go sideways later.”

“But you said-,” Nick’s voice seemed a bit low at first but then grew in strength, “One more job and you will tell me what I need to know.”

“You are right and this job is not over,” Vince said his voice hard as stone. The two stared at his other for a moment. Vince sat there with fierceness that years of being a leader gives you. On the other hand Nick’s anger seemed to boil from some more emotional spot.

“This is bullshit!!” he said and pulled at one of the chairs causing it tumble about three feet. Nicholas left in a huff knowing there was nothing he could do. He got back in his car and drove to meet people and have drinks. Which is something he very much wanted at this point.

                      FBI Special Agent
                      Maria Bradford
"How about a strong shot of honest,
don't you owe that to me?"

Maria sat back sat back in the sophisticated bar, she had taken a seat in one of the smaller tables, her leg would cross over the other has her hand swirled around the hard liquor she had in her glass. Bruno did as he said and took a long way to this Lakeview place, allowing her to view the city in a detailed eye, as she had a change to relax. Yet now as she sat there in the atmosphere oh high society chitchat and the sound of classically music it was now allowing herself to slip into some deep thinking. It was actually amazing to see where she was at that moment, to see how far she had managed and how hard she had worked for it. Yet it was bitter sweet, for it was only she who could be proud of her achievements for her mother knew of none of them and her father would only see some. Yes as she sat there at the table with the glass of liquor in hand sitting across from a complete stranger it was only a true realisation of how lonely she got. Bruno saw the sad look that was cast upon the girls face as he himself picked up his drink and took a sip of it. “Something the mater my dear?” Bruno would finally ask as he placed down his glass.

The simple comment made Maria stop turning her glass to look over at him and blink slightly out of it, trying to piece together what Bruno had just said to her. Bruno raised an eyebrow as she gave a polite smile and shook her head, “Sorry… just tiered,” Maria pushed off her excuse as. Slowly she brought the drink up to her lips and took sip. Drinking wasn’t recommended when going undercover but a single drink wouldn’t hurt, she could handle a bit of liquor before she did some crazy things. Yet her mind would drift off again as the music played on, wondering what was happening at home. She missed her partners and wished they could be closer, being out in the field without anyone to rely on completely was an odd feeling for her. Bruno was the closest thing she had to a partner out there in Chicago. Trying to create a deep cover had its disadvantages to a person’s life, it was true Maria could be considered someone who was married to the job.

“Hmm… well I can take you back to your hotel if you wish,” Bruno suggested shrugging it off as if it was no big deal.

Maria smiled and shook her head, “Nah… I’d just do paperwork and then go to bed… might as well get some kind of a drink in.” Just because Bruno was what could consider her only partner in this situation didn’t mean she needed to open up, didn’t mean she had to express what was really going on in her mind. Even with that truth thought what Maria did say was the truth, yes, it didn’t matter what she did the night appeared to be an exciting one. It wasn’t long after when Maria caught the sight of Nick walking into the door and scanned the place where Bruno would wave him over.

As much as Maria’s mind was back to reality it was something addicting to the atmosphere that made her want to continue to go back to her thinking. The depressing thoughts of her life still Maria would snap out of it long enough to raise her glass to the sitting Nick and give him a soft smile. “Good evening Nick, night to see you,” She greeted him before taking another sip of her drink.
