Wheatley couldn't help but smile at Christine's reaction. He absolutely loved making her happy and more so when she kissed him as she did just then. He couldn't help but putting his arms around her as she kissed him. The passionate kiss was enough to make his heart race much the same way it always did. It was an amazing feeling him and Christine were so close together. From being a robot, to being a human, things were definitely amazing right now. Wheatley smiled as she pulled away knowing she was happy with the gift he got her.

He turned to Angela who was now leaving the house. He had been given help by Angela picking out the necklace for her but he didn't know she was going to leave. He turned to Christine at the question.

"Oh! Don't you worry about it. I've just come into some... money..." Wheatley wanted to remain secretive about his methods of obtaining enough money for said gift. He looked at Christine feeling his heart race a little faster. For the past few weeks now, he had felt different. A good different. His feelings for Christine somehow grew and grew by the day and now that he finally understood what he was feeling, he felt the time was then to tell her.

He looked into her eyes and couldn't help but notice how beautiful he saw her and smiled before he kissed her on the lips one more time.

"Christine... I um... I have something... I'd like to say..." clearly nervous, Wheatley held her a bit closer to him now feeling the moment get more and more intense by the second. He had wanted to say this now for quite a while but never quite found the correct words nor the right time.

"I uhm... Christine... I uhm..." he hesitated for a while wonder how she would react. Then, a sudden confidence came over him. He shook off his fears.

"Christine, I love you." his words brought about a relieved feeling knowing his true feelings were now out in the open for Christine to know and hear.
Christine decided to let the manner of money go for the moment, all to happy to just enjoy him and his wonderful, thoughtful gift. Of course, it wasn't the gift itself that mattered to her. It was the sentiment, the fact that, whatever he'd had to do to get the money together, he'd probably put a lot of effort forth. Just for her. She'd have to remember to celebrate his 'birthday' in particular style when it rolled around. For a moment she contentedly rested in his arms, too happy to try to pull away.

When he started to speak, she tilted her head up to look at him, wondering what he was having so much trouble getting out. Normally Wheatley had no trouble with words. However, the mystery quickly fell into place in her mind, and she'd worked it out just as those weighty words fell from his lips. Christine felt her heart hitch in her chest, and she somehow managed to press herself even closer to him in their embrace before making her happy reply. "I love you too, Wheatley. I have for a long time." she admitted, nuzzling her face into the front of his chest. Hell, she'd loved him when he was a robot. Maybe she hadn't been in love with him, but still. As difficult as it had been, and as confused as those feelings were, she'd truly loved the core who often lit up her days. To think, if she hadn't have been laid off...

"You know, I'm glad I got fired." she said, leaning back to smile at him, affectionately brushing his ginger bangs back from his forehead. "Otherwise I would have been stuck with weird feelings for a robot the rest of my life." she realized with a brief grimace. That would have been strange. "This is so much better. It just feels..." she paused to search for the best word. "It just feels right. I've never been happier, Wheatley." she stretched up and kissed him on the cheek.
A wave of relief came over Wheatley. Along with that wave came emotions of joy and a sort of happiness he had never felt before. Sure as a personality core he felt emotion, but never on the scale he had just then. Nothing before could compare to that moment. Being a robot sent off to do arbitrary tasks never brought him the joy that he felt at that moment. Christine had filled a gigantic void inside of Wheatley. Having known each other for quite some time, he couldn't and wouldn't imagine life without Christine, it was amazing how things escalated. Wonderful to say the least.

"You know, even if I was still a core, I think I'd still love you. I loved you even before I was turned into who I am now." He put his arms around her giving her an embrace like never before. An embrace that just poured out all his feelings. Wheatley kissed Christine on the forehead before speaking "Things feel so right. Perfect, muffin. Things are perfect." Wheatley looked down at Christine "I never wanna let you go" and with that, Wheatley's feelings were successfully out in the open.

Everything was perfect that night; the candle-lit dinner they shared, the house all to themselves, downright, it was the time they spent together that made the night so special. It wasn't everyday they planned special nights like that one. But having it be Christine's birthday, Wheatley wanted her to have something special. She deserved it after all. Who knew, maybe she would get a surprise from the employment gods or other employment deity.

"Did you like your birthday, muffin?" Wheatley said on his side as the two rested in their bed.
Christine couldn't have enjoyed her day more. Spending time with Wheatley at any time was great, but he'd gone all out to make sure she would be happy. And happy she was. Relaxing with Wheatley on her bed, she played with his hair, teasing her fingers through it and smiling softly. Of all of Wheatley's human features, his hair might have been her favorite. That, or his vivid blue eyes. Although he always seemed to give her something new to love.

At his question, Christine managed to smile even more brightly, and kissed him on the cheek. "Of course I did, Wheats. I got to spend it with you. What more could I ask for?" she said, nuzzling contentedly into his neck. Just as she did so, the phone began to ring. She ignored it for a few moments before groaning frustratedly. "Might be Angie. I'll be right back." she said with a sigh, and slipped out of the bed, hurrying to the living room to snatch the phone out of it's cradle just in time. "Hello? she answered, trying to hold back her impatience.

        "Christine, hello, how are you?"

"Robert? Hey, I'm good, yeah...how are you doing?" she asked, surprised. Robert was one of her coworkers from Aperture. He'd been at the party she and Wheatley had attended a few weeks ago. He was a good guy, friendly.

"Great. Listen, I've been meaning to call you for a couple of days. You remember that robot Allonso designed, the one that, uh...took your job?" He sounded embarrassed. Christine scowled, and didn't respond, not enjoying being reminded of that. "Well, I have good news. The bot went insane. Tried to kill the entire accounting wing."

"Thats...that's the good news?" she replied weakly.

"No no! The good news is, Allonso got fired, they shut off the bot, and now I'm in charge of engineering. I'm calling to ask if you want to come back to work for us." he said excitedly. Christine was stunned speechless. "Christine? You still there?" Robert sounded concerned.

"Yes, sorry!" she apologized, and composed herself, not wanting to sound too eager. "I'll...I don't know, Rob, I've got a new job now...I quite like it." she sniffed nonchalantly.

"I can offer you a 10 percent pay raise." he said without hesitation. Christine stifled a gasp.

"I'll have to think about it." she said, her voice almost wheezy, her chest tight with excitement.

"Great, see you Monday?" Robert said cheekily, knowingly.

"You know it." Christine replied, and hung up. She stood over the phone for a moment before doing a little half-jump into the air, literally squealing with delight. She dashed back into the bedroom. "Wheatley! Wheatley! Oh my god, I got my old job back! I got my old job back!" she jumped onto the bed and pounced on him in a hug, giggling happily, feeling like a delirious schoolgirl.
Wheatley couldn't help but smile and cuddle up closer to Christine before giving her a kiss on the forehead. The day had been a great one and he was very happy to know that Christine had a day as good as his own. It made him happy to know that his actions had made a big impact as they did. Not only his actions but his plasma. Lots and lots of his own plasma. Fortunately for him, he had plenty... or so he presumed.

The phone was a bit of a nuisance, it ended their moment and made Wheatley roll over to his side of the bed where he sat up expecting to have to drive out to some party to pick Angie up. Maybe she had gotten so drunk she couldn't drive herself home let alone stand up and walk to the door. Wheatley slipped his feet into the fuzzy slippers at the side of the bed.

The day had turned into night and the pair planned on going to bed soon but the phone had disturbed those plans. Hopefully the call wasn't urgent. From the sound of it, it sounded a tad urgent which peaked Wheatley's interest as he never once heard Christine speak of Angie. Thankfully, Angela wasn't the caller and they wouldn't be leaving to pick her up at a house filled with drunken college students.

He couldn't help but smile at the news. Christine was finally offered a position back where she belonged to work; at Aperture. Wheatley put his arms around her giving her a loving hug before giving her a kiss on the cheek. "That's absolutely wonderful!" clearly excited, Wheatley couldn't help but hide his excitement for Christine who now was able to work where she loved to work.

That same Monday had made its way to the present and both Wheatley and Christine seemed to be excited. Wheatley had woken up extra early to start Christine's coffee and to catch the morning news and stock information. Things were strange, only months ago, he was trying to figure out how to get dressed and how to eat, now he was keeping track of stocks and planning out which ones would be prime purchases. Maybe he would ask Christine to buy him a few shares of a company to see if his calculations were correct.

The tall Wheatley took a seat at the sofa as the TV started up. Angie was still asleep in her room which was closer to the living room than his shared bedroom with Christine, making watching TV a bit of a task while Angie slept. Normally, if Wheatley turned the TV up a little bit too loud for Angie's liking, she'd wake up and turn the TV down herself, fortunately for him, she appeared to be way to asleep to even care.
Wheatley had been up before Christine, insisting that he take care of coffee before she got up, as usual, letting her maximize her night's rest. She loved how he took care of her all the time. It was like having a househusband. She took a nice long shower, got dressed in her best work clothes, and made sure her hair and makeup were done extra nicely before heading out to the kitchen to get her coffee. She would skip breakfast, knowing that Aperture would have donuts available in the lounge, as usual. It made her so happy to be back at the place she loved so much. Life really was perfect in that moment. She glanced at the clock and winced.

"I'd love to sit down and spend a bit of time with you before work, Wheats, but I have to go. Need to get there early to settle into my new office." she said, pouring her coffee into a thermos rather than a mug, and bending down to kiss him on the forehead. "Make sure Angie gets her laundry done, I'll see you tonight. Love you." And with that, she was out the door.

Arriving back at Aperture, Christine felt as if she were back at home after a particularly long vacation. After stuffing her face with what she was sure were the best donuts in the entire galaxy, she was taken back through the halls and briefly explained that she would be working on the Dual Portal Device.

"I thought we'd given up on that for more practical products." Christine said in confusion to the intern who was leading her to her new office.

"We found some of the original blueprints, back when it was still the Quantum Tunneling Device, and we think they might lead us to a breakthrough on it's design. They're in your desk...I think the office you're in was the lead designer of the QTD's at one point." the excited intern gushed. Christine was excited too. To think, she had been hand picked of all the engineers to work on the QTD, Aperture's pride and joy. She practically glowed as she walked into the office, flicking on the light. She frowned slightly, noting the thick layer of dust settled on the various office furniture. She spent a bit of time dusting it off and getting settled in. Once the dust was cleared, she finally sat down and pulled out the drawer. A tightly rolled up paper rolled to the front, and Christine picked it up, unfurling it and looking it over.

The design was absolutely brilliant. It was beyond genius. Christine, her interest even further renewed in her passion for engineering, smoothed the paper out across the desk, her eyes hungrily devouring every detail of the schematic. Her fingers traced some of the finer details, squinting to follow the small, cramped handwriting. She glanced around the schematic for a signature, wanting to know who was behind the design. Finally she found a signature in the corner, and focused hard on it.

Wheatley Pendleton. Christine had to read it again. She got it right the first time. Wheatley Pendleton. Her heart skipped a beat. Okay, Christine, don't overreact. Wheatley isn't THAT uncommon of a name she thought in shock. After a moment of collecting her scattered thoughts, she rolled the paper up and placed it back in it's spot, deciding to ask Robert what he knew. She found his office, in Allonso's old office. Finding it open, she knocked on the door to announce her presence. "Hey, Rob, I was just wondering what you could tell me about the designer of the QTD. Just out of curiosity." she said as nonchalantly as she could manage, which wasn't very nonchalantly at all.
The lazy Wheatley, clearly still a bit asleep and groggy decided to start the daily chores which included things like... washing the dishes, starting up the laundry, and most importantly of all, keep an eye on the news for anything important that happened. Normally, Wheatley tuned into a British channel where three middle age men argued about a car one seemed to like but the rest seemed to loathe. Having a British accent, he followed along amazingly. He even laughed at the humor they used. Strange.

He sat on the sofa, folding both his and Christine's clean clothes. Angie had come to the agreement to do her own laundry. Wheatley wouldn't be doing her laundry for sure. The only laundry he'd care for was his and his lover's laundry. Eventually though, Angie rose from the dead and stepped out into the living room where Wheatley had just finished folding the clothing and kept it well stacked in the laundry basket that he expected to put away once his shows ended. "Mornin'. Christine set off to work, kiddo. Seein' all her mates and such down at the facility." he reminded Angie of Christine's location to make sure she didn't go out looking for her in a frantic rush.

Robert sat in his office signing off on a stack of paperwork that had been handed to him. Most of which was for department funding. For instance... a big thing on the list was fire blankets. Even after Christine left, the combustion problem was still a big problem that plagued all wings of science. Fortunately for the rest of the engineering department, Robert signed off on extra fire blankets and extinguishers.

He stayed stumped for a second at the sound of the name... Wheatley Pendleton... The name was so familiar. He knew where it came from. It slowly started hitting him like a ton of bricks. Suddenly, his memory was clear as day. "Ah! I remember the name now!" he stood up from his desk and walked over to a filing cabinet near his desk for another form he needed. "Ah right right! Wheatley Pendleton. Back in the 50's, he use to be the lead engineer here. Johnson really kept him close. Pendleton is the actual creator of the QTD. Without those original blueprints and initial testing conducted by him, we wouldn't be working on it today. Word is, he came here from one of those British places. Dunno what it's called. Bristol? Dunno. Point being... the guy was brilliant. Shame what happened though." Robert ended at that. He didn't go too in depth as to what happened to the doctor. The story got pretty... violent after that.
Raptly, Christine listened to Robert explain to her what she had already figured; Wheatley Pendleton was the creator of the Quantum Tunneling Device. What piqued her curiosity further, though, was when Robert mentioned where the good doctor was from. "He was British, too?" Christine gasped at this fact, tried to cover it with a hand to her mouth, which she then tried to play off as a cough. She was acting suspicious, probably. She didn't want to tip her hand about Wheatley--her Wheatley, not the engineer...though they could be one and the same. But, if she did end up revealing what had happened the day she quit, she trusted Robert more than anyone with that information. He was a good man, a friend. Still, she would save her further questioning for another day, if she decided she needed to pursue the subject.

"All righty, Roberto." she gave him a friendly pat on the shoulder. "I'll leave you to your work." she said, and with that, returned to her office. She scanned over the blueprints, rifling through the several sheets of them, each signed with that same name, sometimes prefixed with "Doctor," sometimes not. All were just as revolutionary and brilliant as the first. Christine spent the workday poring over them, checking over work that was more than fifty years old, work that she knew was right, but still had to be certain of. Before she knew it, her shift had ended. She got up to leave, preparing to lock up her office, but hesitated. She grabbed the schematics, rolled them up, and carefully placed them in her bag.

I must be crazy... she thought as she drove home, the schematics and this mysterious Doctor Pendleton weighing heavily in her brain. There was no way that...they could be the same person. Wheatley was a robot. A personality core turned human. Sure, using a brain scan as the basis for one of those personalities was feasible, but...

Actually, once she thought about it, even as a robot Wheatley had been special, different from the others. Was it possible that he could be the brain scan of this Doctor Wheatley Pendleton? Well, she would know soon enough if it was feasible, after showing him the schematics. If he was, or once had been, Doctor Pendleton, then maybe he would know something about the schematics.

"Hey Wheats." Christine said as she came in the door, kicking off her shoes and taking a seat on the sofa. She kissed him on the cheek. "Today was great. It's so exciting to be back at Aperture again." she said, with genuine enthusiasm. She fished the schematics carefully out of her bag and unfurled them. "Look at what they have me working on: the dual portal device!" she said excitedly. Angie wandered her way over and leaned across the back of the couch.

"That isn't English, is it?" she snorted, tilting her head this way and that as she tried to read it.
Wheatley was laid out on the sofa when Christine arrived home. He reached up to return Christine's kiss on her cheek before sitting up so she could sit next to him. Wheatley was really happy to know that Christine was finally where she wanted to be. Life was great for the couple and it seemed to only get better and better as time went by. Almost like compensation for his years as a mistreated personality core that underwent loads of abuse.

"Afternoon, muffin. What yeh got?" he curiously asked as Christine reached into her bag for a set of rolled up blueprints. Wheatley had no idea what they were until...

She opened them. Suddenly... thoughts. Thoughts. Intelligent ones. Pi. Trigonometry on a massive scale. Math. Engineering. Circuitry.

"My god, muffin... You might as well find the holy grail of circuitry, love..." His eyes were fixed on the papers as he looked through them. The beaming look on his face clearly showed interest in the blueprints which he had no idea what they corresponded for. Wheatley ran his finger through a few notes and some of the design of the decide in question. He looked over it and started mumbling a bit of math under his breath.

"Now I know why they handed you this project, love. The massive scale of recursive functions would be like threading a Bentley through a door. You sure have a lot on your hands, muffin... let's see here... square root... function of... sixty-seven point eight one six three... sixteenth root of the... right right... I understand what's happening here... Wow... It's going to take a noodle like yours to solve this one, honey." Wheatley put the schematics on the coffee table before looking over to Christine, putting his arm over her, pulling her closer to him.

"You've got some quantum stuff there, love. They made the right choice putting you on the job." he turned her way giving her a quick peck on the lips before turning to Angie.

"It's not that hard actually. Once you calculate the ratios in the functions, you're off to the races. It's quite simple really." it was coming to him like a ton of bricks falling from the sky. Wheatley was remembering every little bit of engineering he knew. But why? Was he turned human with an extensive knowledge of engineering? He was a personality core. Not an engineering core.
