" So competitive;" Lire sighed, entering the hideout leading all three males battered and bruised. Lupa rolled her eyes and returned to focusing on her bowl of rice. On either side of her there were two empty cushions; she lire moira and hasira formed a nice square, Cal took one side, Luka chose directly across fro her. She kept her eyes down and finished her first bowl, dishing up another one.
" Eat before it gets cold." Lire nodded and dug in voraciously.
" So much testosterone;" Moira and Hasira laughed at this. It was true; males were always physically competing to determine who was the head of their own social packs, whereas females were far more hierarchical in theirs, and right now the heiarchy went Lupa Hasira Moira Lire. It was that simple and not prone too changes.

Jake sighed sitting down. He finished quickly and stood up. "Thanks for the meal." He said leaving. He was to tired from today's events to do anything else. He made it to his room and flopped down on his bed. In a few minutes he was out like a light.

As the sun rose so did Lupa and the rest of the group. It was a nice day, and they could spend it outdoors now that the Knucker was gone. All the girls had gotten into their swimsuits and were taking a swim in the river now that it wasn't toxic. Even Lupa was laughing and playing Chase with her group and watching Cal and Luka competing for their attention, wrestling, but not in the deadly way it had been last night. Lire was egging them on, their own tiny cheerleader, while the older girls relaxed.
" Hasira?"
" yeah, Moira?"
" you think Thrash and Kyre'll make it?" She said, referring to the male and female pair that had gone on the mission.
" Of course they will; they have each other's backs." Lupa snorted; " Remember how hard he thrashed the other males to win her over?" She grinned, " They'll be fine." She looked up and let the sun warm her face, wondering just how much Jack knew about his demon side.

Jake sat away from the group but still watched Luka and Cal fight for the girls attention. He stood up and began walking beside the river. Darn that Lupa! Why did she make me come along too? He thought to himself. She knew he wasn't friends with either of the guys or any of the girls so what was the point in him coming? He looked up from his thoughts noticing how far he had come. I bet if I leave nobody will even notice! He thought. He then sighed again remembering his promise. He then stopped as the river swooped down into a waterfall. He sat on the edge of the cliff thinking to himself.

Lupa noted Jack walking away as Lire did. She immediately ceased her chearing and skipped after him like the child she was.

" If you want any of their respect you gotta fight for it;" She chirpped, eyes big. " Thats the way t works in a Cluster of demons. your supposed to be the alpha, but you gotta ACT like it. I guess all demons are more like wolves in the social thing; its REALLY complicated." Lire prattled; " The females have their own little social system; i'm on the bottom, but the leader's always male but the females kind of pick the leader. We make lotsa the decisions coz we're smarter." She puffed up proudly, then kept going. " But the leaders gotta show whos boss; males fight for the female's attention, the male's social structures based on strength, but they're really fickle. Their attentions change like DAILY. I think Luka kind of respects you after you beat them up; Cal does too. But when the other males come you gotta show THEM too. Being the leader of a Cluster has gotta be hard, but at least its a small cluster. Some clusters back in history were HUNDREDS of demons! The alpha had to fight males like a million times a day!" Lire frowned and scratched her wing. " You should go home soon; It isnt safe to be alone." She rocked on her heels.
Lupa and Moira kept chatting, but froze as they heard the sounds of footsteps.
" They''re home!" hasira grinned; the hunting party was back! The groups hurried over, relieved to see the other half of the cluster show up. Now the group was whole; and everyone was back. Lupa grinned as she saw Noir and Luka chatting; it was good for Noir to find something to do. She was always bored. Cal, as always, was hitting on Ghostie, who rejected him. As always. Life was normal again.

Jake was surprised to hear a voice behind him. He turned around looking at Lire. Jake sighed listening to her. "Your right, except I could care less about getting their attention. Lupa was right when she said the males in the group where hot headed. It's because there always fighting for attention. I don't want to be be bunched up with those idiots." He said standing up and stretching. "But I guess I'll have to if I want to try out this Alpha thing right?" He asked smiling. He then walked over and rubbed her head. "Thanks for making me get up off my lazy butt Lire." He said smiling. "Well come on, we don't want anybody worried." He said leading her back to the others. Who had seemed to have multiplied while he was gone. There was more people now. He looked at them all guessing this was a small group compared to a group of hundreds.

Lupa glanced back at Jake and Lire as they returned; " Well, there's our new Leader." Thrash accepted the fact, as well as Luka,though Coran and Cal still growled. The girls just glanced at him; indifferent either way. " Hey, Lire, let's go take care of the provisions." Lupa and Lire gathered up the supplies that were at everyone's feet and hauled them into the storeroom. Lire organized everything, while Lupa hacked up the deer and dried the meat in salt to preserve it, while keeping some fresh for supper tonight.
" Lupa! Look, Jujubees! I love Jujubees!" Lire bounced u and down as Moira came in; " Really?" The green-haired girl grinned; " We got a feast tonight, eh girls?" She clapped her hands and rubbed them; " I dibs sitting near Cal!" She winked; Moira was almost as loose as he was. Lupa just rolled her eyes; it was amazing how such different demons could live together so peacefully in a cluster.

Jake looked at Cal and Coran as if to say bring it on. He had made up his mind that if he was going to be Alpha he was going to do it right. He then smiled and walked up beside Lupa. "You guys sure are a lively bunch." He said looking around at everyone. "But anyway, I think our first mission should take place in two days. I want to take down the base I worked at since they pose the most threat to us. What do you think?" He asked. Lire said the girls made most of the decisions and Lupa was on top so he thought it whould be easier to just ask her.

" Hmm? Well i'll have to ask Kyre. Now that she's back she's on top. You could even talk to her." She strung up some herbs; " Now that the older girls are back t goes Kyre, Noir, Me, Hasira, Ghostie, Moira, then Lire." She recited the list off easily. " Kyre's the oldest, and I'm only above Hasira coz she doesn't like the males much. Sounds like a good idea though; bring it up at dinner." She smiled briefly at him before heading to sweep out the base. Lire followed her; it was the little girl's turn to do the laundry downstream, leaving Jake alone with Moira. The bird demon's eyes glanced him up and down, than she smiled and winked before leaving to go start making lunch. This would be interesting.
Lupa waved to Kyre as she passed towards the room; " Hey, Kyre. Jake wants to attack the base; I think its a good idea. the men there have some of my blood from when I was caught...?" he waited as the tall, willowy woman was quiet, than she nodded.
" In two days. They should be eliminated, especially if they did that to you." She looked sadly at the scar; " Its truly a shame. You have such lovely green eyes; I promised your mother I'd watch out for you, but look at the job i'm doing." She smiled mirthlessly and continued to the girls' room,, leaving Lupa alone to finish her chores. She even had to tidy up the boys' room; it was honestly one of her least favorite chores. She used a stick to push their clothes and rags to the side before she scrubbed the stains fromt he wall and floor, finishing by sweeping it out. " ugh, piggies." She rolled her eyes and went outside to get some fresh air. " Next time i'll just leaveit for a month; then they'll clean up after themselves!"

Jake looked at Moira and shook his head. "Probably my imagination." He said. He then started walking over to Cal and Coran. Instead of the usally fight, he challenged them to a race instead. They agreed of course not knowing Jake's plan behind this. They soon started and Jake was in the lead. He looked behind him seeing Cal and Coran. "Come on guys! Your going to have to do better then that if you want to catch me!" He said landing on a tree branch and hearing a slight crack. Perfect! He jumped forward and Cal landed on the branch except it broke and he fell. Which only left him and Coran.

He had trained out here many times before so he knew this area well. But he was thrown off guard as Coran kicked him in the back. He almost touched the ground but grabbed a branch quickly and started swinging like a monkey. Coran looked back and grinned. "Looks like I win! Just wait till I tell Hasira! I'm sure she'll like me then!" He said surprised as Jake sprung up in front of him. He tried to punch him but Jake kept going up and he ran straight dab into a tree trunk. Jake laughed as he went and crossed the finish line back near the tree with Cal close behind and finally Coran. Cal was also laughing while Coran glared at the two. "Running into a tree isn't that funny!" He said. "Are you kidding I couldn't find anything ,more hilarious!" Cal said. Coran growled and pounced on him. Jake grinned having fun now. "Hey I want in on this too!" He said jumping in.

Lupa had initially gone outside to tell the boys off for messing their room so much, but she stoped. They were all wrestling; She couldn't help but grin. Looks like Jake'd fit in after all. She turned and headed back inside to help make lunch.

As the boy's where fighting they stopped all of a sudden hearing something like a roar. "What was that?" Coran asked. Jake shrugged standing up. "I don't know. But I want you to go check and see where everybody is. Cal you come with me." Both nodded and Coran went inside the tree. Meanwhile Jake and Cal went towards the noise. Both of their eyes went wide as they saw a huge machine eating trees and leveling the ground. "What the heck is that?" He asked. Suddenly a giant claw came up behind them and grabbed Cal."Cal!" Jake said trying to grab him back. But it brought him back to the monster and put him inside it somehow. He really wished he had his sword right now. He turned around and started heading home.

Kyre had initilly heard the noise first with her bat hearing, better even than Hasira or Lupa's. As soon as she ran out of the tree, the females all followed loyally, and were glad they did as they passed Jake and saw the thing.
" What the hell IS it?" Lupa's eyes were wide, but no one heard her over the roar. Kyre was already at work, forcing her way up to the cockpit and riping out the being inside; a human. She threw him down and let the girls finish the work as the machine, without an operator, ground to a halt.
Lupa watched, grinning like, well, a wolf. Kyre always knew what to do; she was like a mother to all the females here. Ghostie disposed of the human's body well away from the big tree while the others freed Cal with the help of Jake, then sat down to talk.
" What'll we do if more come?"
" Exactly what we did now. We'll have to have the males do patrols." Kyre said calmly, then sent the girls back tot he tree while she looked around some more.
Lupa went back to cleaning, humming quietly. Lire joined in; she could hear Moira walking around outside. She had a feeling she knew who the loose female was looking for, and smiled.

Jake quickly stopped and turned around heading after them. He jumped in the cockpit after the human was removed and looked at the controls. He pressed a button opening up all the doors on it. He jumped up and ran to the part Cal had been pulled into. He looked in disbelief as a magic circle was there. "They took Cal back to their base." He said walking over to them. "I want you guys to find a way to get rid of this thing. I'll be back with Cal in a few hours." He said stepping on the magic circle and activating it.

He opened his eyes as he was in a hallway. He knew this one. This lead to the demon holding cells. He ran down them looking at all the demons in the cages. How had they caught so many so quickly? It looked like they whould have to destroy this base sooner then he thought. He soon grinned smelling Cal. He stopped at his cage and looked in horror. They had cut off his horns! He pulled the bars off and this made the other demons start to whine and beg for his help. "Cal wake up." He said helping him up. Cal slowly looked up and frowned. "What are you doing here? What happens if you die or something trying to rescue me? What are the others going to do?" Jake shrugged. "Kind of new at this leader thing so I didn't really think of what the others whould do. Guess i should start hu?" He said laughing. Cal shook his head and then his eyes went wide. "Jake!" Jake spun around as someone jabbed him in the gut with a tazer. They did the same to Cal and both boys laid on the ground passed out.

Lupa could smell something was wrong; the wind had shifted bringing the scent of Cal and Jake down from the humans encampment. The wolf demon growled softly before she alerted the others.
Only Thrash, Kyre, and Noir chose to come while the rest held down camp. The four demons made their way to the human camp and attacked.
Lupa woke up hours later, stuffed into a tiny cage along row of other demons. She could barely make out Kyre and Thrash in the same cage a ways down, unmoving, but where was Noir? Memories hit like artillery fire; they had been sprung from behind by the puppet, by humans. They had been beaten; she'd seen Cal without his horns and Jake... She jumped up and peered out, green eyes glowing in the dark; " Cal! Jake!" She whispered to the two demons in the cage beside her.
