[Paniculus Farctus]

Mist covered the tiny little village, settled at the bottom of the great mountain. It drifted amongst the huts, even though the sun was at its hottest. The villagers were used to this abnormality, and carried about their daily work, going to the fields where they grew rice and other grains to eat.

A young woman sat on the step leading into one of the houses towards the front of the village, keeping her nephew pre-occupied. Like the rest of her village, she wore grey robes that wrapped tightly around her body, and her long dark hair was pinned back, except for the shag that fell around her eyes, the same shade as her hair.

"Reiko," her nephew said, and she looked up at him and smiled a bit.

Kayden Yamamoto

Kayden stumbled in a daze through the thick and misty forest. His legs would give out any minute, his eyes could no longer stay open. The cuts on his chest and limbs were deep, some of them poorly patched, and still bleeding. Coming to a bend in the forests edge he overlooked a village. "Finally..." he muttered weakly, however his feet could no longer carry him, and he collapsed to the ground, his limp body tumbling down the side of the hill and into a grassy knoll below near the foot of the village. His body lay limp in the tall grass, but his fingers did not leave the hilt of his sword, even while unconscious.

Reiko saw a figure collapse in the near distance, and she stood up quickly, shading her eyes to see it clearer. Once she had distinguished it as a human, she began to run, picking up the bottom of her robe in order to run faster.

Nearing the collapsed figure, she saw that it was a man. Kneeling by him, she touched his shoulder. "Sir? Sir, what is wrong?" she asked gently. "Are you hurt?"

Kayden Yamamoto

As she touched his shoulder, a small pool of blood began to form below his stomach. His long dark red hair was soaking in the blood and his body was beyond self-repair. The grass quickly became red with his blood, and the small puddles began soaking into the ground. However, using all that was left of his strength Kayden let out a small grunt, and released the hilt of his sword. His hand was covered in blisters, most likely from holding his sword for too long, or fighting for days on end. Even what little bandaging covered his body, was in tatters and ruins, his cloths were barely hanging from his body and his once black sheath was now covered in blood stains. He was but a shell of a man, lying in the dirt.

"HELP!" Reiko screamed, looking around to see men from the village running up. "Help this man! Get the healer!"

The healer, a cousin of Reiko's, appeared, arriving at top speed with her apprentice. The two of them bent over the stranger, discussing among themselves. Reiko watched with apprehension until the young boy stood up and looked at her.

"Where can we keep him while he is tended to? Our hut is too full with others."

"In my home," she replied. The two houses were close by, so it wouldn't be far of a stretch for the healer.

Kayden Yamamoto

Kayden's vision blurred in and out over the next several days, waking only for moments to see glimpses of a beautiful girl watching over him. His thoughts raced, wondering if he was alive or dead, in heaven or in hell. After 7 days of sleep and healing, Kayden awoke for the first time. His eyes wandered around the small room he was in, the bed he was laying in. Trying to sit up he heard a crack and Kayden gasped in pain falling back down to his bed and clasping his ribs. Apparently his ribs were still broken, but he was still able to turn his head, and he looked around frantically for his sword, finding it leaning up against the wall. Reaching out as far as he could his fingers only inches away from it before he heard noises outside and closed his eyes and pretended to be asleep.

Reiko pushed her way into the room, sighing and pushing away her hair as she did so. She had cared dutifully for the man for the past week, and he seemed to be getting better. It had taken much of her energy and time, but she had not complained.

Reiko blinked, stopping a little. She had been sure that there had been a gasp from the bed earlier, but now he lay still. Moving over by his bed, she arranged a small bunch of flowers in a vase for when he awoke.

Kayden Yamamoto

Kayden opened one eye slowly, noticing a familiar face. Was this the girl that had been caring for him while he was sick? She seemed awfully familiar, and she was quite beautiful. Slowly he turned his head to see if there were any people at the door, but it was just her, turning his head back slowly he whispered to her "Are those for me?" his voice soft and kind, his eyes opening only slightly to gaze upon her.

"Y...yes," Reiko said, her eyes widening in shock as she jumped, startled. He was already awake. She watched his face, curious.

"You've been badly hurt, sir," she said. "Please don't move, at least for now. The healer will tell you when you are fully healed."

Kayden Yamamoto

Kayden smiled and closed his eyes again. "Can you do me a favor?" Kayden said softly. "Don't tell them I am awake yet." he said smiling at her as he turned his head softly to the side and gazed into her eyes. He couldn't move his body just yet, but he wanted to keep his presence here as much of a secret as he could, if the army were to ever find out, they would kill everyone in the village looking for him.

"The healer I must tell," Reiko said, "but I promise that none other will know." His statement worried her. Usually it was good that an injured man could open his eyes; however, she would not press him for information while he was still in this state.

Kayden Yamamoto

Kayden smiled softly, "If you must, please only her." he said trying to lean forward only to fall back on the bed again wrenching in pain. His injuries were far worse than he suspected, it may be some time before he got up out of this bed. Kayden hoped that as few people as possible could know he was here, and if he could, let nobody know his name.

"Please don't move," Reiko gasped, almost lunging forward to keep the man from injuring himself more. She leaned over him, checking bandages. "I will go get the healer now, so please just relax and don't try to reopen your wounds." Standing up, she moved from the bed towards the door.

Kayden simply winced at her as he lay back down. Kayden could move but only barely, once he was fully rested and back to full strength, he would leave the village at night, and never return here again. As much as he was grateful to the villagers for healing him, he would endanger them by staying.
