Passion of the Christ was low grade torture porn, based on a play that only existed for the purpose of inciting hatred of the Jewish people. Rather than making a plea for people to love Christ, to love God, it cheapshots people for sympathy.
Know what?
I've ******** had it with this bullshit about "The Passion".
No, it does not portray the Jews nicely, because the Jews in the bible weren't ******** nice.
Jews WERE the ones who wanted Jesus dead, the Romans carried out a punishment levied upon Jesus by Jewish elders. Pontius Pilates explicitly didn't want anything to do with it.
Okay?
Okay.

The Bible was also written hundreds of years after Christ when certain kings could put their opinions forth and force them as beliefs on the people.

Anyway here are some movies involving faith that I enjoyed.
Saved, Dogma, Signs, The Mist, The Green Mile, Carrie, Life of Brian, Prince of Egypt.

The gospels were written mere decades after the purported death of Christ,
The latest one, Lucas, still wasn't written later than about 100 AD at a time where the Roman empire had no more animosity towards Jews than they did Egyptians, or Northern Italians.

The Passion isn't anti Semitic, unless the gospels are.

Fireproof was good, I hear there is another movie just like that made recently. It's called Courageous. Except it involves a cop instead of a firefighter.

We watched both of those in a faith group I attend. Honestly, neither were really my cup of tea. I liked Fireproof a little better I suppose.

I liked Doubt and The Matrix Trilogy and ....does Dogma count? I think yes.

A walk to remember. It has brought me to tears every time I have watched it and when I read the book.

Yes. How dare I criticize a movie for being anti semetic by showing the actions of a people while negating the historical context in which it took place in.

Especially when the Biblical Pilate and the Historical Pilate are not exactly compatible, considering he was such a horrible human being he was actually RECALLED to Rome for his bitter persecution of the Jewish people. So, the man who was so horrible even the Romans though he was treating the people poorly just ONCE had a conscience?

Besides, the film itself completely disregards the Biblical message. The point is that Christ lived, not that he died.

Every single gospel agrees on the fact that Pontius Pilate wanted nothing to do with the slaying of Jesus Christ.

As for being recalled to Rome for his "Bitter persecution of the Jewish people":
HAH
You don't seem to understand the Romans:
The story of the founding of the city of Rome involves mass scale cuckolding and ethnic cleansing.
The Romans fought elephants with swords and burning pigs.
They destroyed tribes of people so utterly that the basically only evidence we have of them is what amounts to a Roman checklist of "s**t we killed".
WOMEN WERE RAPED BY ANIMALS ON STAGE AS ENTERTAINMENT.

He was recalled to answer for the accusations levied against him, that of making the Samaritans disobey Roman rule (Because, according to them, they revolted to escape Pilate and not Roman rule). The only source for this is Josephus, and bear in mind that Josephus is a... dubious source. Even then he was never tried.
Putting down rebellions violently was not in and of itself seen as a net negative either, after all Titus and Tiberius were commended for their little escapade in Jerusalem.

And as for the movie:
Thinking about it, I can't see what historical context it's supposed to show.
The Jewish elders wanted Jesus dead because he disagreed with them to a degree they considered blasphemous, and caused trouble because of it.
That's the long and short of it.

And history says your wrong. You know, that thing that trumps Scripture? Actual recorded facts and such?

Which means Pilate must have been pretty screwed up to have made even the Romans think he went too far.

He didn't didn't make Samaritans disobey Roman Rule. He massacred them. Brutally. Historically, he was one of the most violent, brutal people to come out of Rome. And the Bible takes responsibility off of him, and on to the Jews.

This thread was supposed to be about movies! Not about a religious debate! I would really appreciate it if people stopped debating and avoided using coarse language, please. It has gotten a bit out of hand.

Unfortunately I haven't cared for most "faith-based" movies I've seen, except for maybe Prince of Egypt.

Recently my friends and I went to a free showing of October Baby, which is a pro-life movie and was ... rather unrealistic (more so in the characters' behaviors than even the plot itself) and at times ridiculous. But, one of the actresses shared her own (true) story in the credits, and honestly, her small but key scene in the film combined with that little segment was miles better than the rest of the film. I wish the film had given more time to her character. A lot of people at the showing seemed to like it, though.

I wish there were more well-done "Bible story" movies out there. I had high hopes for One Night with the King (about Queen Esther), and ... the book was better cheese_whine Seriously, though. Esther is this beautiful but ordinary orphan who experiences a Cinderella-like rise to royalty and then finds herself in a position to save her people, but it takes a great amount of courage to do so -- she's risking her very life. It's a great story! But the movie tried to make it a ~love story~ over everything else, and thus her courageous act didn't seem very courageous at all.

(Ah, yeah, I just kind of rambled for a bit, didn't I 3nodding )

I did like Saved though. I need to see Dogma one of these days.
