Would you buy this haunted mansion? Lavish 10-bedroom home is on the market for $1.1million... but it is said to house the spirits of seven ghosts

This lavish mansion retains nearly all of its original 19th-century features - and it could be yours for just over $1million.

But there's a catch - the beautiful house is said to be haunted by the spirits of as many as seven former residents.

In fact, the Minnesota mansion is often called 'the most haunted house in Saint Paul', which may explain why its asking price has tumbled from $1.8million to $1.1million over the past three years.

The 10-bedroom house is on the city's Summit Avenue, a street notable for its string of period homes dating from the early days of Saint Paul's growth around the time of the Civil War.

This building, known as Griggs Mansion after its original owner, is one of the best preserved, as it still boasts wood-panelled walls and stained glass installed at the time it was built in 1883.

There is also a highly decorated marble fireplace - one of nine in the mansion, to keep its new owner warm on chilly northern nights.

In addition to its merits as a family home, parts of the house can be rented out, potentially bringing in over $60,000 a year.

And yet, since the house was put on the market in September 2009 it has failed to find a buyer, despite the asking price being dropped by $700,000.

That news will come as no surprise to aficionados of the supernatural, who have long known the mansion's reputation for spooky goings-on.

In 1915, a maid in the house apparently hanged herself on the fourth-floor landing, and ever since that area of the house has been subject to strange noises and scary premonitions.

The library is another area of the house where many visitors claim to have heard a bizarre rustling, which has been attributed to the house's gardener Charles Wade, who loved to flick through books there.

One particularly terrifying apparition is a white-haired man wearing a black suit and top hat, who has twice appeared to residents.

When a psychic medium was brought to the house, she claimed to sense the presence of a Civil War officer - thought to be the house's first owner, Chauncey Griggs.

In 1969, sceptical journalists from the St Paul Pioneer Press volunteered to spend a night in the house to research an article on the supernatural claims.

They stayed on the fourth floor, near to where the unfortunate maid had died half a century earlier - but by 4am, they had been driven out of the mansion by their terror.

No.

Some spirits don't let you sleep.

IDk if there is a ghost like the one in the Grudge then hell no. Some people like those sorta things , it will probably sell.

I'm not a big believer in the Supernatural , but i rather not encounter something. I'll stay blissfully ignorant.

Not for $1.1 million. I am cheap, and I expect my ghosts to be so. ;P

But besides that, eh, why not? I don't really believe in ghosts despite loving the supernatural. I doubt anything would happen, but if something did, then that'd be cool.

Maybe, but sure as hell not one in MN.
Where's Luigi and his Poltergust 3000 when you need them? rofl .

But seriously it is a beautiful home, I know that if I had the money I would assuredly purchase it, and of course find out what caused these spirits to be restless enough that they couldn't cross over to the other side... especially that maid, the gardener, and the white haired man who appeared twice... I wonder what their story is?

A bit large for me, and I have nothing like the asking price; however, if I did, I would probably hire a more-thorough-than-required inspection, adopt the 7 ghosts in a respectful and personal moment, then assign each ghost a bedroom (respecting personal choice of any who put one forward, including me). This would be a fully-informed decision, as only 3 of the 10 bedrooms would be reserved for my use other than a special occasion and with opportunity for express disagreement by any ghost involved. Any malevolence would be rejected at its inception by myself and the other 6 ghosts: a specialist would only be called in to do a cleansing and healing after these means failed. The 7 ghosts would hold their assigned rooms with the understanding that public tours would be conducted within a certain day-time schedule, with 1-2 days off a week and 4 weeks a year entirely free of public guests. The ghosts' reasonable desires would be taken into consideration (music preferances, flowers for the garden, allergies).

And, of course, I would put in a pool. spa, and sauna in the yard for the household.

And good plumbing, including personal bathrooms and separate ones for the public.

*snurfle.*

That's like, my dream castle eek

But I'm really paranoid about things that don't exist so I probably wouldn't buy it if I had the money.
I'd buy it and operate it as a B&B. You'd be surprised how many people WANT to sleep in allegedly haunted rooms/houses.

That's a really good idea. I'll pitch in if you ever decide to actually do so!

I wouldn't. I've already lived in a haunted house and its not that easy. You feel on edge all the time and it makes it hard to really relax.
