Emily Letts believes abortions are safe and not necessarily a huge deal, so she made a video of her own operation to help convince others

Emily Letts works as an abortion counselor at Cherry Hill Women’s Center in New Jersey, so when she herself got unexpectedly pregnant, she didn’t take long to decide she would terminate the pregnancy.

It wasn’t a difficult decision for her, she wrote in a Cosmopolitan essay, because she knew she wasn’t ready to have kids. But Letts took it one step further– she decided to film the abortion to show other women that it wasn’t scary.

“Patients at the clinic always ask me if I can relate to them — have I had an abortion? Do I have kids?,” she wrote. “I was so used to saying, “I’ve never had an abortion but…” While I was pregnant and waiting for my procedure, I thought, “Wait a minute, I have to use this.”

Letts decided to let a camera crew film her first trimester abortion in order to dispel some myths about what it’s like to get one. She knew from her work that most women still think abortions are hugely risky and painful.

“We talk about abortion so much and yet no one really knows what it actually looks like. A first trimester abortion takes three to five minutes. It is safer than giving birth. There is no cutting, and risk of infertility is less than 1 percent. Yet women come into the clinic all the time terrified that they are going to be cut open, convinced that they won’t be able to have kids after the abortion. The misinformation is amazing, but think about it: They are still willing to sacrifice these things because they know that they can’t carry the child at this moment.”
But Letts also said her decision to film her abortion was also about showing her total calmness about the procedure, that it wasn’t something to feel tormented about. “I talk to women all the time, they’re like ‘of course everyone feels bad about this, of course everyone feels guilty’ as if it’s a given how people should feel about this, that what they’re doing is wrong,” she says in the video. “I don’t feel like a bad person, I don’t feel sad… I knew that what I was going to do was right, because it was right for me and no-one else.”

But even though Letts clearly intends the video to be an asset to the pro-choice movement, it’s possible that pro-life activists could turn this around and accuse her of callousness for videotaping the procedure

This.

Abortion is not a decision you make lightly. And to just sit there in awe of the fact that *gasp* you can make a life, especially when you're about to take it away, is a little disturbing to me.
The video is also available in the link provided.

Nice, she made a video on how heartless she is...

Sorry but I don't feel you should merrily skip off after having an abortion
No matter how you see it, it's still a potential life you ended, on purpose, that deserves more respect than that

I think what bothers me are the pro-choice arguments that it's not really a human life. Seriously, it's your choice to terminate a pregnancy, but that's still a life forming inside of you. Quit pretending it's not. If you're gonna get an abortion, whatever. But don't try to convince the general public that a life is not a life because of whatever stage of pregnancy it's in.
How dare she try and combat the campaign of misinformation and shame! The nerve of some people. Trying to show people that something which could dramatically help your life is not as horrific and painful as it's opponents would have you believe. Seriously!

Eh. This shouldn't have happened how it did. Abort if you want, or don't if you so choose, but don't make a spectacle out of the whole thing. People (or extremists might be a better word) on both sides of this issue tend to do that all the time, and it's just stupid.

I agree.
Idc if people get abortions, I understand that there are many situations you don't want to bring a child into.
You don't have to grieve for years, but don't go throwing a party either.

Huh. I imagine that undergoing an abortion would be a nerve-wracking experience, regardless of circumstance. Due to that, it's probably a good thing that there's someone out there who's willing to show those who may be undergoing it soon what it's like.

How is it making a spectacle out of the whole thing? Filming a simple, common procedure to help alleviate fears about receiving the procedure is in no way making a spectacle of it. I saw a Lasik procedure being done on a local news show and it made me much more receptive to considering the operation, was that making a spectacle of eye surgery?

That awful pun in the last sentence just kind of happened. redface

I think its ok for women to get abortions, i see nothing wrong with that. But video taping them? Wtf?

Pretty much this. I like how posters in this thread are trying to shame her for taping a medical procedure and saying she should be 'merrily skipping off' after having one. Clearly the only acceptable feelings after an abortion are shame and trauma.

1. You can find a video of just about any medical procedure out there so this aspect is not a big deal. Fact is some folks are going to have (whatever procedure) done so it's nice to be able to see some examples of it. Video google for abortion - she is hardly the first.

2. Any thread / news article about abortion generates a heated argument about the morals / ethics / when life begins and so on. No surprise there.

In other words. I don't really see this as news.

lol - capcha is 'bunny rabbit' - which years ago used to be involved in pregnancy tests.
(though contrary to popular perception the rabbit always died whether or not you were pregnant)
Oooooh my god, why did she TAPE that?!

It's a potential life, but I don't think it has much of a chance until it latches onto the walls and starts to form. Before then most of them are aborted by a woman's body. And yes, it's still know as an abortion just like a miscarriage is. Most eggs are aborted before the mother even knows about the conception.
