I agree, really, but I'd say it's more the media than anything else. They pick and choose the stories their viewers watch and hear about, so it's them who picking 'Snookie is pregnant' over other stories, like the children prostitution rings in Uganda. I could almost swear they were never going to shut up about Michael Jackson's death. It's tragic, I agree, it's a really unfortunate thing how he died, but it's not something I want to see shown on the media over a year since it happened. =/

To each continent their own pet problems eh?
Speaking from a North American view, we're rather...insular.
Not much going on in the upstairs department.
Even technologically, we're decades behind some other parts of the world.

Nah, I'd say it's just the US, but then this doesn't come as a big shock to me. lol =P

Canadian Gal Right Here:
We're...fond of the United States, sort of.
I'm not sure why the crazy doesn't seep over the border more than it does already, but we're pretty content with our lifestyles up here, for the most part.
At least in the communities I've lived in, people are more interested in world issues than whose wearing what on the red carpet.
And then you've got the other part of the maritime population who couldn't give a flying mackerel about what's going on outside the price of cod and haddock. xd
I kind of like that though.
Just doing your best to get by in the world and be kind to your neighbor, no matter where he's from or what he looks like.

Really? I was planning on moving to Canada later on this year, or early on next year, depending on how much money I can save up. lol

I guess none of them saw the 'inspired/base by true events' disclaimer in the credits or bothered to wiki it.

It is a bit surprising of what many are ignorant of and what isn't being taught any longer in schools. But at the same time I tend to get the 1984 "Ignorance is Bliss" feeling when it comes to education at times, especially when it comes to history and world problems. And with the changes some people wish to make to text books for kids history is being heavily diluted.

No one wants to know or believe that the US had their own concentration and internment camps. sex slave trade, forced genital mutilation, slavery that still exists, the bystander effect many have while they see/know something wrong is going on and etc.

Although I'm a touch surprised no one tried to do something on the Hindenburg in the same vein as the Titanic movie.

But really in this day and age we can't rely on the schools to teach everything (especially with people changing the history books to make everything look better) while we have the resources to learn more via the computer and the old fashioned way aka library.

If you want to make money and work hard: Alberta
If you want to raise a family and find love: The Maritimes
If you want to explore and travel: B.C. and the Yukon
If you want to get cultural: Quebec
If you want to meet the friendliest people in the world and party like never before: NEWFOUNDLAND! (Newfies are Awesome!)
If you want to be citified: Ontario
If you want to live better in general - try a little of everything.
We don't mind. smile

P.S. It rains a lot in B.C.

there have been people who don't know where Pearl Harbor is. So this doesn't surprise me at all. Its like, Whats the point of having the internet if you can't look things up? My sister is 11 and doesn't know what the holocaust is (was), But shes just in grade school and to my knowledge, they don't teach about that until high school.

A proper history class needs to be a mandatory class in Middle and High school. and they need to have a broader spectrum of history than what they do now. It doesn't take forever to teach about the Titanic or something.

Dude, we did studies and such on WWII, The Cold War, Desert Storm, Kosvo, and others when I was in the 6th grade.

To a certain extent, I could understand why they did not know. For a lot of young people, the only exposure to the Titanic tragedy they have is that film, and Hollywood has a habit of selling bullshit. Also, I'm a senior at a university, and I have yet to be taught anything about the Titanic in any history courses in my whole life.

....wow really? We had a week set off to the side for Titanic studies when I was in elementary school, the 6th grade. :/ That's kind of sad.

Dang what kind of school did you go to? the schools where i leave aren't really good. I didn't learn about those mentioned above (well a little about WWII) until high school and even then it wasn't much. I learned all i know from my grandfather, Dad and myself looking it up on the internet. oh and the History Channel. lol

Not thought about titanic but I read it in an English comprehension passage and a nice magazine we would like to know as National Geographic.

To be honest I don't think I was ever taught about it in school? Maybe it was mentioned in a one-off lesson when I was really young.
But I'm British, it's just one of those things. If a kid in the UK is aware of ships sinking, they'll likely know about Titanic. Playing a game about a sinking ship, likely the kids will call it Titanic because the two are virtually the same to them. It's a part of our maritime history and culture.

I think when I saw the film my mother may have explained to me that it really happened, and that the film used fiction to tell a true story.

However, to be honest, I just assumed the majority outside of the UK didn't know about the Titanic o.o
I mean, it wasn't really their disaster, and it happened 100 years ago, why would they know?
Though in seeing the film I'd hope the words "based on a true story" would reach them somehow ^^;;

What are they teaching kids in school these days!! Seriously...

I am no officially scared of the new generation.

Remember what George Santayana said, "Those who cannot remember their past are condemned to repeat it."

Yeah, I wonder what kids are really being taught in schools today.

On a lighter note, congratulations on your new arrival.
