in 2010 Debbie Stevens donated a kidney to her boss who was deathly ill.Stevens was not a match, but apparently if she gave her kidney to another, than her boss would move up on the list to get a matching kidney and have a sooner surgery. after both surgeries, Debbie claimed that her boss turned on her, that she was being rude, and harsh towards her, Stevens complained to the company, that moves her to a different location and a few days later ended up firing her.
video here

Ms. stevens is now suing on the grounds that she was treated poorly and gave up a kidney for her boss and instead of being greatful, she fired stevens

so debate

how do you feel about this case?
imagine you gave up your kidney to save your boss and they turn around and fire you, how would you react? would you sue too?

She should take it back.
I am sure she did it out of the kindness of her heart and not get something out of it.

Stevens is being an idiot. An organ donation is a GIFT. Look in any dictionary: a donation is a gift! I don't know what her real reasons were for making the offer in the first place and then carrying through with it, but nothing changes it.

And now she wants to kill her boss by forcing her to have the kidney removed? That's just insane.

I found two long articles about this story:

honestly she should lawsuit for the woman manipulating her for the kidney and clearly harrassing and forcing her into doing it. sure she did it as a selfless thing, but the fact that she was talked into it by the boss, without seeing if she had a match, was horrid. and the boss becoming so nasty for not getting it form her? what did she hire her for!? kidney cattle!? Unacceptable. I hope the poor woman gets her rightly earned payback to that horrid boss.

actually in the story article I read she wants payment for being forced off of work and harrassed and humiliated by her boss, her boss reportedly became vicious and hateful to her and demoted her to a car dealership 50 miles from her house, and the woman had been injured during the surgery so during the time she was healing this happened or had been planned out for when she came back. honestly it's hard to tell who wants what in this but I doubt she wants that kidney back I think she just wants to be repayed for how horribly she was treated after saving her boss' life.

I think we don't have the whole story. All the articles that I've read on this are one-sidded. They only have Debbie's story. And she's the scorned party, so of course she's going to make the other person as horrible as she can. For all we know, her firing had nothing to do with a kidney and with her poor work performance. Or maybe she was stealing from them? It could be a lot of things, but she SAYS it was because she donated her kidney.

I like to wait until I see both sides of a story before making judgement. Especially since I know the media can't be trusted with the first blush of a story.
no one will ever know exactly what happened but one would think that if she gave up her kidney she did it with the expectation of nothing in return, but in the real world a little favoritism would be expected not being fired!
but if that was the case then you don't ask for it back!! whats is done is done! let karma take it...but i would sue for being fired if there wasn't a good reason!

I believe when people say that Debbie wants her kidney back, they are going by this quote from the second article posted.

Quote:

The Long Island mother who was fired after she donated her kidney to save her boss’ life demanded that the woman return the organ yesterday.

“You hate me so much, and I’m so despicable — give me my kidney back!” wailed Debbie Stevens, 47

understandable for that, but she has a right to demand it back fi the woman turns on her and makes her miserable after she saved her life. it's a classic case of manipulation. why did she even hire her or approach her for the kidney if she wasn't going to pull something like this or show gratitude.

Which is why I believe in waiting for all the information to come in. When a person is fired, there is a paper trail to show just cause. I'm positive that in that paper trial, "Fire because I got my kidney" isn't in there. Without hearing the other side, we have have no idea the real work situation. Debbie SAYS she was a model employee and makes a case that she was mistreated after going through the surgery, but heck, I have an ex-coworker who SAYS she's a model employee, despite being the sole reason why my old company hired and lost over six people in a years time. People can say anything, they need the proof to back it up.

hmm. agreed, hopefully the media will keep up with this or explain whats going on better when more stuff comes to light. but still I know there are two sides to the story but who knows.
Like, what?

Why would you donate a kidney to... your... boss!?

What...? >.<

I don't see how donating her kidney to somebody else could have moved her boss up on the transplant list. It's not a first-come-first-served process: it depends on who's the best match for an available organ and also on the greatest need. Some people are considered priority-level because they're in imminent danger of death, but they wait and wait and wait and no match is ever found. And then some people are on the transplant list for a week and get a match. It's mostly luck who does and who doesn't get a transplant.

I don't know the details. Somehow, by donating her kidney, Stevens made sure her boss was in a better position. The boss got a kidney from a person in San Fran. I have no idea how transplant lists work or anything like that. I just know that there had to be something else going on (since from what I can tell, the operations were either done the same day or very closely together. There was a mention in a few articles that Stevens went back to work first, before she should have, and was yelled at by her boss for going home sick, even though the boss came back later after a full resting period). I'm keeping an eye on this, as it's my new hobby to watch certain stories unfold.
