In a new Gamasutra feature, Team Ninja director Yohei Shimbori discussed the sexuality of the characters in its new fighting game Dead or Alive 5.

Shimbori explained that the studio received word from its overseas offices to tone down the sexuality of the game's characters. However, this was reversed when the studio received feedback from fans who played the Dead or Alive 5 demo included with Ninja Gaiden 3.

"We actually got a lot of feedback from people who were playing it, saying, 'We want bigger breasts. Make the characters more like that.' That was kind of surprising," Shimbori said.

The developer added that so long as the core mechanics of its fighting game were in place, there was no reason not to adhere to fans' requests and further sexualize its characters.

"There's definitely still room for having sexualized aspects," Shimbori concludes. "If you have a solid fighting game system there, there's nothing wrong with having beautiful characters as a layer on top of that--that's another layer of entertainment that there's a need for. If there wasn't a need for it, people wouldn't have responded to the alpha demo like they did, and send us feedback."

Dead or Alive 5 arrived earlier this week for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

I've never been a huge fan of fighting games (they get repetitious fast IMO) but I don't have any problem with one having 'bigger boobs'.

Pretty much every fighting game I have seen has 'bigger everything'. Real life men don't tend to have the kind of muscles you see in those games either. While these games sometimes have people of realistic proportions most of them would stand out like circus freaks if you saw them walking around your local shopping mall. And that's without the fireballs and the giant swords.

No, we don't need more video games with the "overly-sexualized-female-character" stereotype. It's ostracizing the female gaming community and reinforcing sexist potrays of women.

C'mon guys, did Harley Quinn really need to wear that revealing nurses' outfit in Arkham Asylum?

EDIT: It seems this comment has gained alot of controversy lately, and I've been quoted dozens of times by different people. I've argued my position and I'm not repeating it again. Please, don't quote this comment, or else I'm probably not going to respond.

Moar boobs!
I don't have a problem with the hyper-sexual outfits and proportions of video game characters. Let people have their fun.

If that many female gamers felt ostracized by overly sexual fantasy characters, there wouldn't be so many dressed up like them at conventions.

Noooo! There boobs are fine! I like them the size that they are. If they do change the size I hope they don't make them too big otherwise being able to actually fight and play the game will be ruined because most people will be staring at their over sized boobs... and honestly for people who actually want to play the game I can see how that would be an annoyance. :/

If they want to change anything make it for their outfit options cause most of the characters outfits suck.

Anyway, my point is that there's this sort of "boys-club only" feel to gaming. Myself being a gamer, I feel disgusted that a female protagonist has to be sexualized in order to be a hero. Now, I know the reason for this is to give a better visual appeal to the character, but this really only benefits straight males. See where I'm going with the ostracized thing?

It is only recently that women have surged into the gaming world. They're going to target the majority of people that buy the product (much like mainstream porn is geared towards men).
Personally, I just chuckle at the body proportions and completely useless outfits (for both the male and female characters). It's fantasy though, there's super human abilities and crazy plots. I don't think the fat greasy male gamers are too bothered by the fit and handsome male characters. That would only appeal to a heterosexual woman or gay man.

All you can do is give your feedback or get a game that suits you better. Power of the consumer. =]

Right, and this will not change until you reduce the over-sexualization of female characters.

Actually, the male athletic/fit physique stereotype is suppossed to appeal to straight men. It's there to make the gamer feel dominant, powerfull, and confident. Ryu isn't bulging with muscles just so gay guys can beat off to him.

The problem is that there isn't much of a broad variety to choose from. Majority of games fit into some kind of sexist based trope. Even the more "girl-friendly" games are in itself sexist. Take the Barbie or Disney Princess games, for example.

Heh, whippin' out the split posts.
This is something we clearly don't see eye to eye on, so I'd rather just end the conversation here.

Well, I thought we were having an open debate. We are in the ED sub-forum, after all. But, oh well. Maybe next time.

Fashionable Hunter

I do not mind the boobs, and my brother's more into Halo, COD, Starcraft, and Minecraft so it's not like I have to instill boobs-are-not-that-big values in the kid.

I do remember always feeling really disturbed by the attractive and busty pixie-hair redhead on my parents' Intel poster in their store until they replaced it because it got old. So I do feel like I should be like "Stop increasing the cup size! Now!"
