Ive personally found no correlation between the number of dots and the number of units. Like often you get 5-10 dots per side in a 4 on 1 type battle.

so far it's only happened to me during final battles or equally large ones, so i haven't really been counting well

that makes it even stranger. . .

XD I play quite a lot (well not so much past couple days been quite busy with other stuff). But seems it can happen at any time.

My dots have always been pretty random. At one point I even tried to calculate what dots mean what. But I couldnt find enough data to make anything substancial, and they did seem random.

i assumed there was a dot for every unit, since they're arranged about the same way as units are
(back-row, front-row, etc)
but i may be wrong. . .

I think the dots are just the locations the units will be in regarding to how many units on either side there will be in battle because I've had different amount of dots resembling the amount of units that were in battle.

I also found something related to this while messing around with chrome's developer tools <_<;

So when you have 18 dots, and only 6 units counting both sides, you think it is showing all the possibly locations of those 6?

Yeah, think of it as the battle layout/template for X amount of units. The red dots represents where the units will be. Usually the red dots towards the center of the screen is where the row 1 units will be and the red dots near the edge is for row 2 units.

I compared 2 different images (one with units and one with red dots) and the locations of where the units and the red dots were in the same spot.

Notice in both images the units are in the same location as the red dots? Whenever you see this red dot image it's just the battle layout of the units.
