I'm surprised that so many who are hurt by it actively oppose it.

It is very common in much of America for people to believe that the government - literally - can't do anything right, let alone as well as the private sector. Moreover, many further believe that the government is actively malicious, and that it seeks to grow itself (and the public worker's paychecks) by siphoning money from The People.

Also at work is the belief that success in America is merely a result of hard work, and that everyone with lots of money earned it. Some people are even capable of explaining this to you while watching a reality show starring Paris Hilton. That, my friend, is American Exceptionalism.

As a Brit I wholeheartedly agree. The idea that your life is only worth as much money as you can pay for it sickens me. It's just callousness and selfishness on behalf of those who do have the money and do have the power to control the system, and I'm surprised that so many who are hurt by it actively oppose it.

A lot of people I know who oppose it are the poor, uneducated, religious conservatives (and there are A LOT of them). They follow the republicans because they are more palatable to the christian religion, not realizing that republican politics are bad for the poor. Also, they have an almost brainwashed in fear of socialism and communism, without understanding any of the politics, so all FOX news has to do is mention the word socialism in relation and the conservative base immediately rejects universal health care.

You don't have to follow Faux News to say it's socialism.
How about General Motors...I mean....Government Motors....?

I'm not saying that it is or isn't socialism. I was just using that as an example of how the working classes of America can hate something that's good for them. This example could apply to anything really.

BTW, clever pun.

You mean how GM asked the government for a bailout so now we have a 60% stake in their stocks?

How is America good for us? Name one thing that hasn't failed yet and still isn't ran by the government?

So everything the government runs works? That's what your fairly rhetorical question implies, but I don't think that's what you mean.

Learn to read before I have to smack stickers all over you telling you what i'm saying that should be easy enough for a kindergartener to understand.

I'm sorry that your phrasing is bulky and meaning unclear. How about you try to clarify instead of being insulting?
Learn to spell and write coherently so people can understand your point, first.

Sorry, did I insult your French heritage? I must translate this with a Google Translater even though it is broken.

I'm not French and I still don't understand you. Are you using a translator? Because I don't think a translator would spell translator wrong. If that is some strange and pathetic attempt to insult my English, then try again bub. I tested out of college writing classes, being both skilled in grammar and coherent in thought.
