just curious anyone have any advice for chronic pain. I've been wearing a wrist brace for almost two weeks now and the pain wont go away. It seems that the pain get's better at points but my main issue is the brace, it seems to help some days other days the pain seems worse when i wear it. I've had this pain before but it normally goes away after a week or two.

i'm not looking to see a doctor quite yet. Obviously if things don't improve after a few more weeks I may break down and go; or if things gets drastically worse. My main issue is not only the pain, but also that it's my dominate hand.

(background)

I stock shelves at night; normally stationary, fabrics & crafts, celebration, and electronics. I stock shelves 5 days a week and with back to school season I've been stocking a lot of copy paper which comes in a carton (10pk 50lbs) that has to either be placed on the shelf or broke open. I also sometimes work in chemicals (laundry soap and house hold cleaners); as well as paper goods such as (toilet paper, towels, disposable plates and bags. ) My job entails a lot of heavy lifting (depending on night and location), as well as kneeling to stock lower shelves and cutting open and breaking down boxes; most of the activities such as cutting boxes or getting up off the ground I rely on my right hand because it' my dominate hand. On a scale of 1-10 I'd have to rate my pain currently around a 3 or a 4 without any kind of Advil or Tylenol

Possibly carpal tunnel. razz

Overusage can cause this.

I personally have it as well due to overuse. I used to play badminton and constantly play games with but from the looks of it. It's overuse. Best way to actually take care of it is to lessen the usage and get a wrist wrap. There are a few different types of wraps ones like neoprene wraps and plated wraps. If it's really bad, surgery is optional but it's not recommended since it leaves a really long scar and it also renders your wrist immobile.

Don't get me wrong. It will go away eventually after a long time but it's able to resurface easily in a few days time. If your curious about the different cases I can tell you some people range from a few weeks to a few months before it disappears and for it to reappear it could be days or even hours depending on how it's used.

It's probably best to see a doctor before things get worse in case it's something that can be treated effectively before it causes more damage.

Is it possible you have carpal tunnel from repetitive wrist motion? Stocking shelves is a repetitive motion. If you do have carpal tunnel, you either need to realize it and stop the repetitive motion and find a different job, or find a way to do your job without the pain flaring up, or speaking to a doctor about treatment options. If it's carpal tunnel, it will only get worse with the activites continuing and the pain will become more and more.

If you're feeling pain, that's the body trying to tell you something. In this case, perhaps to stop repetitive motions and let the wrist heal. Carpal tunnel can heal if it doesn't get too bad. It just takes a while.

If you continue doing activities, you will experience pain and possibly burning sensations. When it gets worse, you may notice numbess on the palm of your hand, or in your fingers. This is definitely not a good sign. Wrist braces can help tremendously, but it needs to be worn for a while. Sometimes immediate pain relief is there and sometimes it will flare up, but it depends on the activities you're doing.

If this is from a possible injury or an old injury then it may not be having the chance to heal properly and causing pain for longer periods of time.

I'm not sure if this is repetitive motion. I've worked at my job for a year and started out as a day shift cashier for about 9 months; i've been on overnights as a stocker for about 5 months. As for switching jobs that's not to much of an option. I don't drive yet (i'm 19 ik it's weird) but where i live if off some state highway so aside from walmart or fast food there's very little else close by. Also my family works the same hours at the same place so i have a ride. Switching positions isn't much help because there are pretty much two options for overnight people cashier or stocker; working overnights is better because my hours are always the same 10pm till 7am, i get set days off, a 40 hour work week (on day shift thats nearly impossible to come by) as well as $1.50 more an hour.

I'm over 20 and I haven't gotten my license yet so no worries - it's not weird. To others it may be, but - don't let it get you down. I can understand how that can interfere with your carpool switching times when you have a perfect schedule.

Cashiers and those who work at jobs in where they type a lot are overly capable of getting carpal tunnel because it's repetitive motion. Although, it has to do also with the posture your wrists are put at. Perhaps follow some tips for carpal tunnel and see if it helps any?

Perhaps take note of when your wrists hurts the most and when it feels better so you can figure out what may be causing the sudden pain onset, and what may be helping it go away.

See a doctor if it bothers you. It's best to probably see a doctor anyway since you're not in pain all the time. If it's something that can get worse then it may be best to see what treatments are available early on.

Don't bother with a regular doctor. Check in with a hand/wrist specialist clinic. They're more likely to actually find out if anything's wrong.

Also, have you been icing and compressing it, or just wearing a brace?

If you've been doing that and it's still been a couple of week already, you should probably see a specialist.

honestly it still feels like that; but it's getting better. I will admit there's still pain but i'd only put it at about a two now. Maybe if i'm lucky it'll go away before i go back to work tonight

Hm. Well, hope you feel better, and if it gets worse or doesn't get better within another week you should see a specialist.
