Welcome to Gaia! ::

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this!

Anyway, about 20 years ago (when I was 1 1/2) I got 3rd degree burns from my belly-button down.
They've healed a lot, though are still VERY visible. But when I get stressed or sick they feel very very tight. Not itchy, per se, just tight. Like I'm wearing too small jeans or something.
It's been suggested that I moisturize and stretch it regularly, which I've been doing all my life.
It hasn't helped, to say the least.
I'm not sure if it's just in my head or what because I know absolutely nobody else with anywhere near the same level of scar tissue or burns that I have!

So I'd like to hear your experiences with burns/scars/injuries/etc. and the aftercare
As well as some suggestions for good, cheap moisturizer, perhaps.

From what I know, you have been doing everything right so far (including posting this thread here). I do think that each person sees their own imperfections much worse than others do. If you grew up with that, people on Gaia are not going to know any more than you do.
Scars and stories and Stitches

I recently asked people about their scar stories as well since I got injured a few months ago too. I hope these are useful!

Yeah, I guess I was just hoping there was someone else with similar scars and whatnot! I tend to not bother the doctors much about my s**t because I always worry that they'll tell me I'm just being overly paranoid etc. etc.
Thanks.

I'll check those out, thank you!
I don't know how good it is for burn scars, but does your moisturiser contain vitamin E? That is what the body uses for skin repair. I use it on the scars I have.

The doctors get much, much worse than you asking them about reducing scarring. And they would rather you ask than follow the wrong treatment.

I'm sure that's true haha
I'm going to be seeing the doctor this Thursday so I'm gonna bring it up then.

High-functioning Lunatic

I've given up on the scar that was a result from a mole removal on my thigh. I still rub cream (CVS vit E 30,000IU) on it every day and massage it in. Its helped a little, but it still itches from time to time. At this point its just there, been there for 4 years, and it will still be there. My dermatologist says there is a quick procedure to dull the color, but that's pretty much it.

The color on mine isn't a huge issue, really. Parts of it are a little more red but after 21 years most of the color differences have faded completely. It's just REALLY weird textures haha.
I'll have to check out that cream, though, maybe it'll help me a bit?

How big is that scar though? I'm thinking of getting a mole removed and I wouldn't worry about scars (obviously I've got plenty) but it's on my face so???

It really depends on the mole. The scar on my thigh is about an inch long and as thick as a pencil. It was not a good mole. And it itches and stings from time to time, that's the only reason why I still massage it, because it seems to keep under control.

I also had one removed on my breast. That one had no scar whatsoever.

The one on my thigh was biospied through a "punch" and it took a good chunk out of me so the remaining MOHs surgery added to it.

The second mole was "shaved" as a biopsy, and when that came back fine that's all I had done, so no further damage was done.

Do your research for your mole removals . Look for Derms who specialize in skin cancer, moles, cosmetic surgery and the like. Research the type of surgeries available in your area and find your specialist. Ask what kind of biopsies are available. The punch is STUPID. If you don't need it don't get it. And check with your insurance. Most insurances will not cover a cosmetic mole removal but will cover if it is a 'danger' or 'concern'.

I doubt my insurance will cover mine, it's cosmetic (as far as I know anyway!). It's a fairly big mole on my forehead and I have a problem with chronic skin picking. I've torn apart my scalp avoiding picking at that thing.

Thanks for the advice, I'm glad I'm going into my next doctor's appointment (where I'll be asking him about it as a start) with a bit of information already.

so rather than say its cosmetic say that its a concern. You can lie a bit. If you tend to scratch it and damage it it will irritate a mole and irritated moles and change under the right conditions. Often times if you tell a doctor they will not be able to tell you much, speak directly to a derm, and they will give you professional advice. I've even heard if the mole is small enough they can simply freeze it off like a wart.

That's a good idea, I'll probably do that. "It's a concern"
And ok, I was going to the doctor anyway for separate reasons, so I'll still probably bring it up but I'll start looking for a derm!
I think my mole is too big to freeze off, I personally view it as huge. But I'm sure a lot of that is just in my mind haha.

Blessed Cat

i win i currently have over 1,000 small scars on my body but try coco butter if you wanna make it less noticable. I'm not sure about the moisturizer though goodluck...
