I don't even understand why the author killed Lupin...

I think it was to leave Lupin and Tonks' son without real parents
So that he would end up being left to his godfather.
Kinda like Harry had.

Sirius: Didn't really care about him I guess... neutral
Mad-eye: Wasn't made to be sad, but it was awful because he was so kickass.
Dumbledore: I cry like a baby everytime I read this part. Definitely the most heart-breaking. sad He was so bad a**.
Lupin&Tonks: It was sad, but I really didn't care. They weren't really that big a part of the book.
Hedwig: Made me tear up. sad Poor bird.
Fred: WTF?! WHY?! He was so funny and awesome! Why did she kill him?! George isn't George without Fred.
Snape: It wasn't a sad death, but it was awful becuase he basically had to live a lie half of his life. And he had to live with so much regret. sad

Dumbledore's was the worst though.

Dobby and Hedwig's deaths were the saddest to me because they were just kinda pointless. crying
Lupin&Tonks, because of Teddy.
Snape because of all he had to go through.
And Dumbledore was just a badass.
... And FRED. That was really unexpected, and just kinda like, "Really? you really had to kill off a Weasley?" crying

I thought Dumbledore's and Dobby's death were sooo sad! They both died trying to save what they loved most! And I'm re reading the series and forgot some of that stuff!! AHHH!!!! That IS sad!!!

I think they mean that there was no reason to kill them off in the first place. And yes, Dobby's death was pretty freakin' sad.
