Lonely Phantom

I joined the other day, after waiting two days for my acceptance letter (email).

I'm a Hufflepuff. Although I've seen lots of Hufflepuffs getting upset that they were chosen, it seems to me to be a very honourable and friendly house emotion_bigheart
And I'm perfectly happy to be in it.

My wand is a 10-inch laurel with phoenix feather; bendy. I'm pleased with this as well!

And I'm decent at dueling, but as so many people have figured out how to get really good at it, and I've yet to mess up a potion... I think it's better for me to stick to practising duels so I don't lose us too many points. I'm turning out to be quite the little potions master, though. I splurged and got the decent copper cauldron. The other is apparently even better, but I couldn't stand the pewter anymore and want to save up for lots of ingredients as I think I'll be brewing more and more often.

I've heard all sorts of terrible things about cheating and sabotaging houses... I believe it. I've seen Slytherins and Gryffindors alike boasting about cheating, and heard lots of people talking about how they made another account to get in the house they wanted ((generally called "the house I deserved/was supposed to be in/clearly am" by such people)) and use their first to sabotage the house they didn't want ((which, sadly, appears to usually be Hufflepuff)).

I've heard the least reports of cheating coming from Hufflepuff. I'm trying very hard not to be biased as I research this, but I simply can't find any. Perhaps our cheaters just don't boast about it as much. But this causes me to wonder... are the current house point levels accurate?
I've heard that many accounts are being suspended for cheating, but I haven't heard if their points are taken away as well, although that seems to me to be the fair thing to do.

But in any case, I would like to encourage every single person on Pottermore who reads this-- and our lovely future first-years-- to please, please, PLEASE do not cheat. It's really sad to me that anyone would cheat for the house cup, especially as house points are traditionally awarded for exemplary and honest behaviour!

Ah well. Pottermore has been a wonderful experience thus far. I encourage any fan who hasn't yet signed up to do so at once!

And if you get into Hufflepuff and are upset about it as you considered yourself a Ravenclaw or Gryffindor or Slytherin, please just stick around for a while, give us a chance! Even if we don't win the house cup this year, I promise it's a wonderful house. It's grown on many people and I think for the most part there isn't a prouder or lovelier group of badgers to be found anywhere else.

There should be a resting period if you fail so many spells/potions in a row.

In HP, if one were to fail a spell, their wand would likely set them on fire. I doubt a first year could sustain their spell blowing up too many times. Same with potions. I'd like to think Snape would throw out anyone who blew up too many cauldrons in the dungeons.

I have no doubt he would xD I did have mine "blow up" once.
I think the house points being taken off are quite appropriate, as they would be taken off.
Especially by Snape.
Especially for Gryffindors.

Fortunately I seem to do alright practising duels. At least, my wand is still intact~

Well, to be honest, the reason why there aren't as many Hufflepuff cheaters is probably because they think that since they're about 3~4 million points behind, cheating won't do anything to help them at this point. The other 3 houses are all pretty close together, neck to neck, especially now between Gryffindor & Slytherin, hence the cheating.

No, I've acctually seen one or two discuss the merits of it in the common room. Although they're generally shot down with a resounding, "What, are you trying to give us a bad name?" or similar. I think that if there were more Hufflepuffs cheating, we'd surely have caught up to the other houses. Lord only knows there's enough of us begging the new years to start earning points straight off...

I'm a reluctant Hufflepuff - but never mind. Your house doesn't dictate what kind of person you are so bring it on. twisted
Gosh, I'm awful at potions. I've tried doing the tutorial one so many times and I've derped it up.

I just go in there today, and I'm Slytherin. I'm not sad about it, rather, I'm quite excited. It's always been Gryffindor who's getting the lime light so I'm wondering what it must be like to belong in Slytherin sweatdrop

I made one account and ended up in Hufflepuff, I have 32 points so far.
I made another account(just to see if I got the same house) and ended up in Slytherin, I have 31 points for that house so far.
Despite having two accounts, which I've never done before for any other site, I am playing by the rules and playing fair. I am active in both accounts, so that one does not have a huge advantage over the other.

That's absolutely right! I wish more people could adopt that attitude.

If you're serious about getting points for potions, definately keep working at the tutorial. If you want to do something different, once you've gotten the hang of timing and all that, there are several videos out there that can sort of give you an idea of what making a different potion is going to involve before you try it yourself.
Also, if you mess up, you can sometimes tell because green smoke is going to come out of your cauldron. Lots of people reccommend hitting "back" straight off and re-doing everything; I don't. It works, but if you just refresh the page it'll start you at the beginning. Much simpler, as long as you do it quick! Neither way loses ingredients or points.

But in all seriousness though, my older sister was sorted into Hufflepuff. A bit upset at first, but she came to terms with the fact that it's the house that best suits her personality. Plus she likes being able to say Hufflepuff don't care. Hufflepuff don't give a s**t.
And yes, cheaters are a thing. /: Especially in between Gryffindor and, sadly, Slytherin. There has been a fair share of talk in the Slytherin Common Room about people who are upset with being sorted into Slytherin and sabotaging them - and even though it's not as prevalent as the other one, there are people in our Common Room with the audacity to brag about cheating.
I guess that's what you get for having the two most competitive houses in a deadlock for the House Cup.

All I can really say is this:
Dear Upset Cheaters and Angry Self-Sorters,
THANK YOU for ruining a perfectly friendly online experience created by one of the most influential writers of our time. Only the internet could breed as many selfish assholes as you guys. You could just, oh, I don't know, DELETE THE ACCOUNT WITH THE HOUSE YOU DIDN'T WANT instead of turning our fandom into a fighting ring.

There have been? I didn't know that.
I will be careful, and continue to play fair. biggrin
Cheaters on Pottermore? I haven't heard about it, but if it's true, that...sucks. I mean, seriously? Pottermore is supposed to be a place for fans to experience the books in a clean, fun way. I got into Ravenclaw, but if I was sorted into Hufflepuff, I wouldn't mind at all.
