The veil wasn't what actually killed Sirius. Sirius was hit with a curse (unknown what curse it was, but the movie seemed to think that Sirius was hit by Avada Kedavra when he wasn't) that caused him to fall into the Veil.

We don't really know if he's dead or just held in limbo, or transfered to an alternate universe or what. This is where fanfiction comes in, hey its magic. All JKR ever said outside the books was that the curse Bellatrix hit him with was not deadly, but that he was not coming back.

The veil killed him cuz he was still alive when he fell into it. And isn't it unsure where that gateway lead to? He could still be alive.

Bellatrix hit Sirius with a curse that knocked him back INTO the veil.

Personally, I think that the veil represents a type of gateway to the other side. Luna and Harry were the only ones to hear the whispered voices, plus they were the only ones to have seen people die. Therefore, I think it has a link to the dead, and since Sirius was pushed into it with a curse, he had to go into it.

I think I read on harrypotter.wiki that once you go through the veil, you kind of "die." It's a pathway between the living and the dead.

Makes sense, since it looks like the dead can't truly exist in the real world (ghosts, the people that popped out of Voldy's wand in book 4, and the Ressurection Stone people), and probably the living can't exist in the death world.

But still, I don't think the veil killed him. It just took him to the other side.

Everything you did was perfect! Now, for the part you didn't do:

This refers to Sirius. When he died his name was cleared.

This, refers to Harry. When Sirius died what did Harry get? A dead godfather.

Now, another concept to be solved. VegetasBabie- Other side of what? Sure, Bella's spell hit him which caused him to stumble, but the veil is the cause of death. I just makes sense. My brother agrees with me. DrunkenSamurai agrees with me. I think Choral agrees with me, but I'm not sure with her.
Elevent_hour_reprieve-If he wasn't dead, then how did he appear in the seventh book? Harry ended up using the stone and Sirius was there too. The Stone only brings back the dead. I think I've made my point.

Sweetie, this isn't really an argument or anything. It seems a little bit more like opinions.

The other side, as in the dead side. Nearly Headless Nick was afraid to move on and I think this veil represents the separation of where the living, and Nick, are, and the other side is where Nick was afraid to go and where Sirius went.

In the book it's even referenced as a doorway.

"It seemed to take Sirius an age to fall. His body curved in a graceful arc as he sank backward through the ragged veil hanging from the arch..."
"...Sirius had only just fallen through the archway..."

It doesn't say anything about how it killed him, or that it even did. He just fell through it after being hit by a red curse.
Besides, who's to say that Avada Kedavra is the only killing curse. It can't be blocked which is why it's so effective. Bellatrix could have hit Sirius with another curse that could have killed him. It may not have been fatal if Sirius was able to block it, but he wasn't.

Anyways, I don't think he was "killed" by anything. I think he was hit by a spell that caused him to go through the veil, to the other side (heaven, hell, limbo, whatever it is) and it was the fact that the living couldn't be there is what killed him. Almost like if someone wanted to cross the River Styx and go to Hell, they could go, but in the process they would die. The boat nor the river killed them, just the fact that they couldn't go to Hell and be alive is what killed them.

But that's my opinion.

Either way, it sounds debatable.

Okay, you guys are probably right. JKR definately wants to tell us that Sirius is dead. I just refuse to believe it for my own sanity. I just can't accept it, and will do anything to prove, at least in my own mind that Sirius Black has survived. I think that, if Sirius is dead, cause of death is debateable, at best. If the curse bella threw at him didn't kill him (and I'm pretty sure that JKR said it didn't) then some thing to do with the veil must have killed Sirius Black.
However. I don't think that Sirius is dead. Here's why I think that he showed up witht the stone: The book says that the stone dosen't really bring people back to life, dosen't it? And Sirius and Remus and everyone didn't look like they did when they died. Instead the looked like a happier version of themselves. So, maybe they looked like what harry hoped for them to look like in the afterlife, I mean he thinks hes going to be joining them soon, he probably wants something to look foreword to, in a bazaar, disturbing way. So maybe because Harry's been told that Sirius is dead, and has begun to accept it, he sees Sirius happy with his parents, not because Sirius is dead but because thats what Harry wants to see. Its all in harry's head.
