Yep! That's right..Now..reasoning, anyone?

I lost the reasons but...
I think it was:
You may find it barbaric
The way that we attack
But if you are victorious
You may just take that back.

-The game is completely barbaric, as Hermione put it the first time she witnessed Harry and Ron play. (Since the pieces literally attack each other XD)
-But it also means you've taken out your oponent's pieces, and that helps win the game.

The same in many ways
As the original fun
The change is all the difference, though
That gives the former a run.

-But when they were getting the Sorcerer's Stone, they actually became the pieces themselves and being a victim of your oponent's moves and being wiped out from the board is not fun.
Bluff and choose carefully
For in the end your wit will shine through
To win or to loose depends on skill.
But this effects us too.

Wizards Chess is a game of wit and strategy. Making the correct moves can lead to victory.
But no matter what, the pieces are affected as well because they're the "Pawns of the game". Every move made can affect the pieces and one wrong move can have them kicked off the board.

Don't worry .Herms., it wasn't that easy. I had originally thought it was Peeves then the Bloody Baron. I was halfway through typing out how it was him when I had the thought that maybe it was Phineas. I got lucky.

And I'm still working on creating new riddles myself. It's quite difficult because I don't want it to be too easy but I still want people to be able to guess. sweatdrop Oh well, I'll keep working and maybe seeing HBP will help inspire me.

Haha, I think we all stuggle with these problems-it's hard to write a riddle as well as solve one smile P.S. When I read it to my sister, she thought it was Peeves too.

Hi! I've been following this thread for a while now, and I thought I'd try my hand at a riddle. Here goes!

Rewards:
Answer: 200 gold (.Herms.)
Reasoning: 400 gold (.Herms.)

Time Limit:

Nine of us there were
One who once was not
Two who soon won't be

Nine of us there were
One gained
One lost

Twenty of us there are
One given away
Three more accepted with love
Nine received with joy

Wrong Answers:None!

Correct Answer: The Weasleys

Welcome to the thread, Hermione Jean Granger W

And here's my guess: The Weasleys!!

Nine of us there were
One who once was not
Two who soon won't be
**There are nine basic/original members of the Weasley family: Molly and Arthur, and their seven children-Charlie, Bill, Percy, Fred, George, Ron, and Ginny.
**One, Percy, was once for a time not part of the family. This was while he was working for Barty crouch and believed his family and father in particular were wrong to support Dumbledore. He also accused that Arthurs bad rep was holding him back at the ministry.
**I have several ideas about how the third line fits...maybe it's all of them. My favorite idea, the one I think is most correct, is first and bolded.
By the end of the series, two members of the family have been lost, one literally and one only in name: Fred has died in the Battle of Hogwarts, while Ginny has married Harry, thus changing her name to Potter OR Two children are marrying and leaving home at the end of the series: Ron marries Hermione and Ginny marries Ron? OR (and I like this one the least) Two children were attacked in the Battle of Hogwarts: Fred was killed, Ginny was gravely threatened by Bellatrix, but saved by Molly.

Nine of us there were
One gained
One lost
**If we stick to the time period of the Battle of Hogwarts here, this may refer to Percy rejoining his family and fighting for the side of right.
I guess outside of this it could also refer to Hermione being gained to the family in marrying Ron, or the earlier addition to the family of Fleur upon marrying Bill.
**Also in the Battle of Hogwarts, Fred was lost from the family forever, as he died in the Battle.
Or this could again refer to Ginny marrying out.

Twenty of us there are
One given away
Three more accepted with love
Nine received with joy
**By the end of the series, there are 20 people alive bearing the name Weasley.
**Ginny is given away to Harry when she marries him, becoming a Potter (all their kids are Potters too)
**Three of the Weasley kids marry, and their new spouses are accepted with joy. Percy marries Audrey (1), George marries Angelina (2), and Ron marries Hermione (3). Bill had already married Fleur earlier in the series and I'm not counting that here.
**There are nine new grandkids who bear the Weasley name: Bill and Fleur's kids Victoire, Dominique and Louis (1,2,3), Percy and Audrey's kids Molly and Lucy (4,5), George and Angelina's kids Fred and Roxanne (6,7), and Ron and Hermione's kids Rose and Hugo (8,9). I'm not counting Ginny and Harry's three kids, because they do not bear the name Weasley but are Potters (although obviously they are related to the Weasleys very closely).
**By the end of the series, the 20 people alive and bearing the name Weasley (not in the extended family) are: Arthur, Molly, Charlie, Bill, Fleur, Victoire, Dominique, Louis, Percy, Audrey, Molly (jr.), Lucy, George (no Fred), Angelina, Fred (jr.), Roxanne, Ron, Hermione, Rose, and Hugo.

Whew. I had this idea right away, but once I got into explaining my reasoning, I had to do some research. Hopefully I'm right.

.Herms.

And here's my guess: The Weasleys!!

Right! Some of the reasoning was different from mine, but it works. Like the one who once was not was for Molly who married into the Weasleys from the Prewetts. And the timeline for it goes, mostly, 6th, 7th, Epilogue. I actually completely forgot about Percy being a prat. For the first set, your favorite reason was right.

Sending trade thing!

Thank you very much! It was a great riddle, I really liked how it was written smile
Haha, oops, I wasn't even thinking about Molly marrying in, even though I was totally reading up on the various marriages that happened!

"Brilliant," said Hermione. "This isn't magic-it's logic-a puzzle. A lot of the greatest wizards haven't got an ounce of logic."

My guess is Ravenclaw's Diadem:

a wonder made in days of old
It was made around the time of the Founders.
the answers to all secrets told
It bestowed wisdom upon the wearer.
Just a guide but not a book
Wisdom is only a guide, it doesn't give the complete answer and of course, it's a crown.
stolen twice only once by a crook
It was stolen firstly by Helena Ravenclaw from her mother and secondly it was stolen from Albania by Lord Voldemort the 'crook'.

That's my guess.

... because Death Eater's do it better.

Mostly correct, Anika, although the second part just referred to the original game of chess, which is basically the same except for the moving and attacking pieces. An additional 500 gold to you! (:

My guess is the Marauder's Map:
a wonder made in days of old
The map is immensely complex and it was created in the Marauder Era.
the answers to all secrets told
It revealed that Pettigrew was alive in PoA. According to Remus Lupin, "the Map never lies", so there's no way to trick it- it will always show where you are.
Just a guide but not a book
Maps guide people where to go, and the Map clearly isn't a book.
stolen twice only once by a crook
I'm not too sure about this one, but here goes:
Fred and George nicked it from Filch's Office. As far as the crook goes, Remus took it from Harry, and then used it to help Sirius, who was considered a crook at the time.

thats a good guess but i'm sorry it wasn't what i was thinking of. I don't think Voldemort ever actually stole the diadem he simply enchanted it and used it as a storage container. but as this still fits by your logic you win a consulation prize.

There you go. this is the correct answer. although the crook i had in mind was filch when he confisacated it. teacher confiscation always seemed like stealing to me. sweatdrop congrats to moOnflower.
