The Draught of Peace is usually tested during O.W.L.s, Owls are Birds of Prey therefore 'hunters' wings'

As my copy of OotP is back in the UK I'm going to take a stab at this and say that if you're too heavy handed you may put the drinker into an eternal sleep or even kill them.

I believe Harry doesn't read the instructions off the bored properly and goes wrong for which Snape vanishes the contents. The second line pertains to the dungeon room filled with various vapors coming off cauldrons. It's hard to follow the instructions through the haze of different vapors :]

This is what decided it for me. I thought for so long that this was about Luna BUT it's about Moonstone, a vital ingredient in creating the Daught. When Snape vanishes his potion, Harry has to write an essay on the properties of Moonstone in Potion making.

Now this is where I come up at a loss.
I assume 'one will succeed is Hermione' and 'only one chosen to fail' is about Harry as Snape singles him out.
But the five struggle in vain I have no idea. Like I said, my copy of OotP is in an entirely different
continent.

That reasoning will definitely suffice! Almost everything is just as I was thinking. I'll send you a trade!!

If you botch the potion it could cause deep sleep or even irreversible sleep.

In particular, it was mentioned that Harry's cauldron was issuing a lot of smoke, and when snape asked Harry what ingredient he had left out, Harry had to peer through to read off the board. But in general, most of the class was having issues, so more generally, there was a haze filling the dungeon, just as you say.

Moonstone is the ingredient I meant, and it's "not enough" because the other key ingredient is Hellebore, which is the one Harry forgets.

And finally, for the last bit, you were dead on about Hermione being the only one in the class who could succeed in making the potion, while Snape singles Harry out, vanishing his potion so he receives zero marks. However, the passage in the book (Order of the Phoenix) specifically mentions five people who have major problems with their potions: Harry, Ron, Neville, Seamus, and Goyle. But that was tiny details, even without a book to reference, you got the main part of this.
