Welcome to Gaia! ::

Even though most are observers, stalking done on a more intense level seems to lead to homicide in most cases. I've read a lot of stories about a person watching another, learning everything they can about them, and getting so caught up in that other's life that they feel the need to kill them. Whenever I hear the word "stalker", it just sends me to all the Serial Killer biographies I have read.

But the way you're putting it, it's on the lowest level possible and can barely be called "stalking"- imo. I look at people's myspace comments all the time and read conversations that have been going on. I like to learn about people's relationships and issues, even if they are oblivious to it. I honestly believe that most of this "Myspace Generation" can be considered this form of a stalker though.

Who would better understand the flavour of an orange? One who actually eats them, or one who watches others eat them?

You'll never truly get to know someone until you've experienced it first hand what it's like to converse with the person and be around them. You can, however, make an educated guess as to their general demeanor.

It's like reading a book. You are not directly connecting the the characters but yet you have an essences of knowing their personality from a distance.
Agreed.
They actually see the big picture.
******** stalkers are creepy.

Eh, but most stalkers are delusional to the point where they think the person they're stalking is perfect and wants to be with them or whatever.

What you're talking about is anthropology. Some people are paid to do that creepy stuff d:

Yes, take a couple classes in sociology. It involves loads of "social observation" which is what you're talking about.

It's all glorified stalking, though rather useful nonetheless.

It might also help with emulating situations you could never be in yourself, but still, I disagree with the title to your thread. o_O I mean, really read what you wrote there.

That is a rather misleading comparison.

While the one who eats the orange will understand how they respond to the flavor of the orange, the one who watches others eat will understand how others respond to the flavor.

But knowledge is valuable.

I say stalker lightly because there are many extremes to the word. When you think about a stalker you mostly think about those aggressive types that murder people because of the obsessions but the words is also used to describe someone who is harmless in nature and only want to observe others lives.

There is a legal definition of the term stalker that applies more towards those that are law-breaking individuals but the word has a very diverse meaning now. I wasn't expecting everyone to jump to conclusion that I was talking about the vicious type.

It's not hard to believe that most people do the same; even though when you're confronted by other you may be called a stalker and a creep.

The title was not to be taken literally so much as the content of my thread.

I use broad statements as my thread titles to attract people but too many people take them literally that they avoid the actual discussion.

i think my being jealous at everything causing gained attention from someone i intensely admire (for 4 years) causes some of those tendencies (?)

i dont count it as stalkerish
i am just nosy. :/

ive had people stalk me
it's not something that bothers me beyond the point of me just being careful what i put down in the open
I am a bit of a Stalker x3 I guess I live up to my username! ;D
Due to social networking sites, like Myspace and facebook, its actually considered ok to look at your friends profiles, wall posts and what nots. They post it up for people to see anyway 3nodding

But before social networking sites it used to be just "stalking". Looking at situations or other ppls posts isn't actually considered stalking anymore unless your joking around with your friends.

Stalking is seriously much more psychotic and mentally disturbing.

Isn't that what therapists are supposed to do?
Take a look at your life, decisions, interactions with other people and howyou deal with them and then make an informed decision/theory and tell you about it?
So in that sense, a therapist/psychologist is nothing more than a glorified(legal) stalker.

I want to be a psychologist so many that's why I find this stuff so fascinating.

Explains a lot.
I see.
People say that I would make a good one because I'm easy to talk to and more than willing to listen to peoples problems.
I don't have a facination like you do though, so I think I would be bad at it.

@Trite: That is quite true. :

Indifference is better, you can just watch the world go by completely separated from everyone else and biased views. Along with the stalker status.

I like to help people out with their problems and would rather see someone mentally well about life than upset and distraught.

Some people's lives are boring though, but I always try to find something interesting about them because everyone is so unique.
