This is a repost of a topic I mead ED/P. Anyway, let's get to it:

Looking back on our country's history, I can only recall a single example of a person who become president that had no spouse or children; he was James Buchanan (1857–1861). He seems to have been a fluke though, as every president before and after him was married, and perhaps also had children (I don't know if there was a married childless president).

I would love to see someone like Bill Maher become president, you know? (not someone who's a grouchy old crank like him, but someone who is single and speaks out for single people's rights like him).

So anyway:
Do you think Americans, by and large, would vote for a single childless person to be president?
Do you have any guesses on why our two major political parties tend to favor "family men" as nominees?
lets just let a woman run it to the ground then we can start over

No I don't think they would yet.

I think because people who are married and have children equate those two life steps with being a complete person who has enough experience to speak for them.
I don't think a single, childless presidential hopeful would be well received across the board. But in any case, it'll just be between Obama and some generic fat white guy and I'll vote for the fat white guy because he'll probably want to rape the Constitution slightly less than Obama will.

In a lot of his standup comedy and talk show formats, he talks about how he feels that single childless people are seen as lesser beings then married parents. he then goes on about how it's wrong and why it needs to change.

If you want an example, I guess I could scrounge up a video of him.

Is that really an important part of the presidency?

Your marital status should not be a major factor in running a ******** country.

People get so stuck on little details that are completely irrelevant from any actual issues. Maybe that's why the past few presidents have been so shitty? We've been voting because of marital status, religion, hairstyle and race rather than anything of substance.

I'm kind of partial to Obama. His financial policies have done some noticeable good in the lives of people I know. Though, Romney is kind of liberal on some things, so, I may be swayed by him, who knows?

Yeah, I think you're onto something with that, as I've seen hints of it all around me. People I know always say there must be something wrong a person if they're above a certain age and still without a partner or kids. I'd hate to think my fellow countrymen took that attitude into the voting booth with them.
