When I was little my parents wouldn't let me have brand name anything, but they always made sure I had exactly what I needed. They only allowed me one hour of television a day and it was usually something educational like Sesame Street or PBS. They encouraged me to have my own interests and to pursue my own hobbies. They took me hiking a lot. When I was in middle school (the time when most children loose their identities) they took me out of public school so I could create my own curriculum.
Years later I have discovered that my childhood was anything but normal. For most children brand name products and retarded television shows (like those on the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon) take up a big part of their childhood memories. I think this is sad since too much consumerism clearly eats your soul, this is something I have observed in nearly every person I meet of my generation.
Discus:
How were you raised?
How would you raise your own children?
