Welcome to Gaia! ::

I know someone whose period wasn't really regular, they
have some weird disease now, so I would get a blood test and
get it checked out

You're not producing enough estrogen. Have you been eating like usual lately? Have you had any other problems?

well lately would be years because the only time i had a semi-normal period was when i first started. bu t eating normally doesn't effect it. Heartburn? bur I've had that before i started my period. and its like.. monster heartburn

Hmm... do you exercise a lot? I don't think heartburn would effect that.

I don't exercise at all

What the hell. I can't figure it out. Maybe it's just normal.

i'm sorry to confuse you >_<

No that's fine. It's not like I'm a doctor. I'm just a biology student.
time to go see the p***y doctor
wink
I'm on the Depo Shot, I had it over a year.

But yah....

Hadn't had my period in a year. Then one day, it started. Lasted over a week. Then Back to months now the road.

Kinda scary. neutral
mine's really irregular too.
i'm on mine right now & i skipped school because i had awful cramps. mad
Stress
Not eating enough
Eating too much
Working out too much
Just being young
But I suggest asking your doctor because something could be wrong.

It's probably just you being young, though.
The only reason mine got regular when I was 17 was because I starting taking birth control.
It really can help with it so if it's just that, maybe you could start taking it.
It makes PMS and all that a lot easier, too.

I'm curious about something. I've never had a regular period. I've been having my period for like, four to five years and it's never been regular; i normally skip a few months, about four at the most. However, because i skip, I never know exactly when i'll start, but that's not a huge deal to me. What I'm curious about is, when a person skips periods, what exactly is happening? Are eggs just not being made, or are they just not leaving the body? And don't tell me i'm pregnant because i'm not. Just trust me on that one.
I've gone to the doctor once before and they said that sometimes people aren't regular until their 20s, which i haven't hit yet. So, I'm asking you, do you know of anything that might be wrong that i need checked out? and why i might not be having one.

Eh, I'm the same way. I'm a week away from the 3 month mark, and I know I'm not pregnant. My doctor said it could be a sign of infertility, but what the hell does she know? Go to a (female) doctor, she may know more.
you're malnourished.
it happens to gymnasts all the time, that's why they're so small and whatnot and can look 1O even if they're 2O.
are you skinny, or do you work out a lot?
because sometimes if you work yourself too much, like training, then you skip periods.
but i mean real training. not just like, jogging on sundays or something.
or, as i said, it could just be because you are malnourished.
Well, if you've been to the doctor and s/he didn't seemed worried, than you shouldn't either.
But if it keeps on bothering you, talk to a gynecologist. Maybe go on the pill to regulate yourself.

Personally I would feel blessed to go without my period for four months at a time.

i'm actually somewhat overweight, which may factor into it.
"Doctors often talk about a girl's monthly cycle — the number of days from the start of her period to the start of the next one — in terms of a 28-day cycle. But 28 is just an average figure that doctors use. Women's cycle lengths vary — some have a 24-day cycle, some have a 34-day cycle. And a girl may notice that her cycles are different lengths each month — especially for the few years after she first starts getting her period."

My mom's periods actually didn't "even out" until she had her first child. For some women periods won't become regular until mid 20's.

Men are a lucky bunch
It could just mean that you're eggs aren't growing at a regular rate, this could be due to your hormones not being regular and that is probably why the doctor said some people don't regulate until their twentys (Hormones are regulated by that time..hopefully)

Either way, if you saw a doctor and you know you're not pregnant there's really nothing to worry about.

A Normal Period Doesn't Have to Be Regular
Some girls' periods arrive like clockwork. Others get theirs at slightly different times each month. Many girls get regular periods most of the time, but occasionally skip a period or get an extra period during times of pressure or stress. In fact, you may notice that when you go on a trip or have a major change in your schedule your period is late. All of this is perfectly normal.

It's also normal for the number of days a girl has her period to vary. Sometimes a girl may bleed for 2 days, sometimes it may last a week. That's because the level of hormones the body manufactures can be different from one cycle to the next, and this affects the amount and length of bleeding.

So how can you tell when you're about to get your period? If your cycle is not regular, you'll want to pay attention to the clues your body may give you. These include:

back cramps or stiffness
heavier breasts or breast soreness
headaches
acne breakouts
disturbed sleep patterns
mood swings
bloating
Most of the time, irregular periods are part of the normal changes that can happen when you're a teen. At some point as you grow, your cycle will probably settle into a recognizable pattern. This usually happens by 3 years after your first period.

However, some teens may develop irregular periods — or stop having periods altogether — as a result of certain medications, excessive exercise, very low body weight, or not eating enough calories. Others may develop problems as a result of a hormone imbalance. For example, disorders of the thyroid gland can cause menstrual irregularities if the levels of thyroid hormone in the blood become too low or too high.

Some women have irregular periods because their bodies produce too much androgen, which is a hormone that causes increased muscle mass, facial hair, and deepening of the voice in males and the development of pubic hair and increased height in girls. High amounts of androgen can also cause hair growth on the face, chin, chest, and abdomen, and is sometimes associated with excessive weight gain.

If you have any of these problems, or if your periods are irregular for 3 years or more, see a doctor. The doctor may prescribe hormone pills or other medications or recommend lifestyle changes that can help you to have regular periods.
