Linguistics is definitely "over most people's heads."
Especially considering that few people in my area even seem to understand what linguistics really constitutes.

Academic writing is "verbose" and sounds, generally, like it was written by a douche. This is for the purpose of specification. Linguistics-- like any discipline--requires its own vocabulary set, else it risks being vague. Interest in the field is limited to people familiar with the subject matter, which brings us full circle: it's hard to find like-minded people being a linguist.
