I finished Uni last year. I want to go back and get my Ph.d. very very bad.
I want to shoot for a Ph.D. in theoretical linguistics-- from a school that adheres to the functionalist tradition. Which--stateside--pretty much restricts me to: Oregon (where I graduated), Texas, Colorado, Hawaii, New mexico, or California.
I've tinkered with the idea of going to Uni in Glasgow as well-- I have many friends in Glasgow and I love the city-- but I think it might be a tad on the expensive side for me.
Cal State Long Beach has a great linguistics department. My boyfriend is attending there for Anthropology. He's planning on going into archeology.
I'm going into the nursing program at a community college. From there I'll be qualified to take the exam for the RN title. Then while I am working as an RN I plan to go to Uni for BSN. If I go to CSULB, I'm planning on minoring in communications and anthropology. I'll most likely focus on the cultural part of anthro though.
My goal is to be a traveling nurse.
I appreciate the advice, but unfortunately Cal state Long Beach adheres to formal linguistic tradition; which makes it a poor match for me.
Linguistics is divided between formalist and functionalist logic; the two schools disagree on many key points, so going to grad school in Long Beach would, unfortunately, be rather unproductive for me. sad
Ah.. well if you end up near disneyland (orange county area), let me know, I'll let you know where all the great food is. n.n; (Feel free to befriend me if you want.. n.n;; )
I did take an intro to linguistics class at Orange Coast College(for a community college, they have a very good anthro department). We only went into the history of language and a glimpse into what I felt was just a glimpse into phonetics.
If I wasn't dead set on getting into nursing, I probably would get into Linguistics or Cultural Anthropology.
If you don't mind me asking, where are you from?
I'm originally from southern Minnesota.. but I moved here (California) nearly four years ago (it will be 4 years on the 20th..)
I'm from Southern Oregon originally; I live in Eugene, Oregon now.
Linguistics is a lot of fun; but ultimately, you have to stick to your passions and your interests; so good for you for staying true to where your heart is.
I'm not a huge fan of cultural anthropology, but I do enjoy biological anthropology. I can identify just about any primate by looking at its skull; which is a *very* random and *very* useless talent. lol
How do you like California? Did people laugh at your accent when you first showed up? Oddly enough, Minnesota is one of the locations I'm considering grad school at. I have a very deep interest in doing work with languages like Ojibwe and Cree.

Actually just today in anatomy class.. Every time I said 'bone' (in lab class we're identifying pretty much all the terms in the axial skeleton.) The Minnesotan "O" came out.. xD
I don't try to hide it, but it seems whenever I talk to friends or family that still live there, my dialect goes full blown Minnesotan..
I don't say 'don'tchya know' but I do say 'ya know' a lot.. ya know? n.n;
Sometimes I still have trouble calling freeways freeways or THE in front of it..(Like THE 405) at least the area I was in, everything was just the highway or highway (and then the number)
The first time I said OOFTA, bf teased me..
Though I honestly have enjoyed it, I love it because although I plan on staying in california for a very long time, I grew up in MN and actually since I've moved away from there, I've gained a bit of pride from being there.
Though in reality, most of my high school friends were already starting families before graduating... I don't plan on having kids till I'm financially stable & ready as well as done with my bsn..

Right there with you on not having kids. lol. I'm 25 now and nowhere near ready.
I'm gonna be an old dad-- but I'll be stable and prepared to be a good father, ya knoo? *laughs*
Sorry, I just *had* to.
My father is from New England, and I do the same thing whenever I talk to him. I get all:
"Well itz bin uh loang time sinz I huhd from ya. How'uh things wit everyboady in Nyew HAMPsh'eh?" lol
But I don't normally talk like that; I grew up in Oregon, so it really only comes out if I'm talking to somebody from New England, like my little brother or something.
Dialects are fun; being a linguist, I'm naturally very interested in anything relating to language.

I think I sound a little silly when I speak. I have a Southern English Accent... With like an Australian twinge, it's odd. Milynn has heard it many times lol
I've done vocaroo occasionally in the GD... The 'adorable' comments kept coming... sweatdrop

LOL I'll be 25 on the 27th... ((Though I have a baby face.. If I wear a sweatshirt that somewhat hides my boobs, people will ask what middle school I go to.. T-T;; ))
My one concern is that I want to have kids before I'm 30.. (mainly because my mother had complications and I don't want to be in the same boat.. n.n;; )
Hence I feel an urgency to finish school quickly..xD
I've also noticed that Californians don't talk about the weather too much.. I do still try to use that as an opener to talk to people: "So what do you think of the weather..?" That's the one that I get odd looks from others then I feel the need to explain I'm from MN and we always talk about the weather..xD
The main thing I tease my mother about is when its 13 below zero with freezing rain (the day I flew to CA, I walked 8 blocks in that crap while trying to recover from the flu... x.x; ) where she is, and I'm talking about the 60 degree weather with a possible chance of rain..xDD
(see I love talking about the weather.... MN habit..)
The area I was in in MN called carbinated beverages was known as POP(though I have a friend from WI that calls it SODA POP.. In Cali they just call it SODA.
You should listen to Prarie Home Companion.. I listen to it and although its "different" times, it seems a lot never changes.. (so many similarites........ o.o; )
And Enchanted.. Your accent.. It's way too adorable..! The one thing I'm a bit afraid of is if we ever did get together and go drinking, I might end up drunkenly hitting on you..xDDD
****NOTE: I seem to be extremely attracted to dialects & accents...
(What's odd about that is bf doesn't seem to have one... he has more of a generalized american... (can't remember the whole term for that.. It's been a while since I've talked linguistics and i'm truly an amature at best...n.n;;;;;;;
