oh well we have that too but student welfare is for youth who get kicked out
then they get a place to rent and live on their own
Haven't heard of it either, I think it really depends on what part of America you're living in

in aus we do.

but it depends on the situation.

like how much money ure parents are getting.
where you live, if you're living away from home you can get some money.

it really depends.

i use to get 800 a month for sitting my a** off.
we can get student loans which gives us the opportunity to be in debt for the rest of our lives
I had it when I was living in tennessee didn't help much since they only gave me enough just for half my books.
This is why I never really supported the brazen, outward attitudes of kids who like to brag about being "independent" at age 18 not relying on their parents for money

Because there are virtually no jobs in this economy that given a high school diploma, can fully support an education, a car, food and housing all at once.

It's a false sense of 'independence' where one trades dependence on parents for support for dependence on loans and welfare (dependence on society) to boast about "breaking free", the ultimate irony and hypocriscy

Debts have a way of anchoring oneself down financially
We don't really have anything like that; we have rather limited welfare for people struggling.

You must remember that--as good natured as half of us may be--the other half hates gay people, thinks welfare is ruining the nation, and likes to pretend that poverty doesn't exist (and what poverty does exist is entirely the fault of the "lazy" individual; i.e. total lack of recognition of the fact that poverty is a socio-economic issue deeply rooted in class structure).

So... welfare here is very divided-- although it differs state-to-state. Your system is bipartisan, so things are more straightforward. The U.S. is separated in accordance to state rule (to a degree), so local laws differ every 100-700 miles. My state if fairly liberal, so it's easy for poor people to get certain benefits-- but beyond food stamps or housing support, it's very difficult to get by on what the government provides.

I'm a college graduate (who did *very* well in college, I might add) living on food stamps right now-- the conservatives call me lazy and want to see me starve.
It gets complicated quickly.
there are pell grants or some s**t for the kids that live under the poverty line

not enough to live off of and pay for school though I think

student welfare here is different then what you guys are all talking about

basically Im 17 and need money to pay rent because I got kicked out
I have to go to school to get money every month and I have to go to councelling
obviously I don't like the fact that I have to be on welfare, nor do I believe I am breaking free of dependance
I still need help

You're in Canada, right? If so-- I'm familiar with the student welfare program to a degree-- but the short answer here is: no; Canada is much nicer than the US on so so many levels.
We get Financial Aid also known as FAFSA. razz
