The first one. Dark Souls 2 tried being more difficult with all the crap like silly tracking and throwing more enemies at you that all hit harder than I remember DS1 enemies doing, but still it somehow came off as a cake walk.

DS1 was for sure harder then DS2. Like everyone is saying, DS2 just has enemies thrown at you like crazy, some in tight spaces so you couldn't run or fight with large weapons. Demon souls on the other hand... sigh

damn that s**t was hard af

id say its cause the bosses in DS2 were lackluster.
best example of this is in DS1 you fight Ornstein and Smough at the same time and when one dies the other gets the strength of the fallen one, and fully recovers health as well.
in DS2 you fight Ornstein alone.

Yeah, but DS2 had more bosses with multiple targets. Though unlike Ornstein and Smough, you can just sight out of relief and take it easy once you're down to one target.

most of the multiple enemy boss fights in DS2 feel like 'slightly stronger normal enemies but with more health' to me, like the lulzfests that were the Skeleton Lords and Prowling Magus & Congregation fights.

even the Ruin Sentinels fight wasnt much of a threat since you can kill the first one before the second one gets anywhere near you and badly wound/kill the second one before the third one gets to you.

The oringal or second?

The first, Demon Souls.

That game is absolutely ROCK HARD, there's no comparison to be drawn with the second one.
Dark Souls is not easy, far from it, but it gives you a lot more chances to save your arse when in peril - in the first game, for instance, you do NOT have Estus Flasks, which are basically refillable HP potions, and have to rely on natural healing (if you have items that allow you to do it), consumables or hugging fireplaces if you want to get back in fighting condition.

And since the fireplaces aren't that many while the enemies most certainly are, and also are out for your blood, you can see why it can be a problem.
