There are undeniable similarities between the Tales and Star Ocean series, but just about everyone knows that, so I think it's safe to say we can just drop it.
This subject has fallen out of date, but on the subject of Albel's effectiveness in combat, everyone seems to think him rather useless. Maybe his AI is wierd, but he's always been able to hold his own when I've got him on the AI. Normally, however, I control him. When controlling him, I seem to decimate just about anything with no hassle (heck, I solo'd Gabriel, Lenneth, and the Ethereal queen with him and trashed them all, no joke). Maybe it just takes skill, but I think the best you can do is concentrate more on Albel's normal attacks than his battle skills. Admittedly, Albel's battle skills take far too long to cook up, and do far to little base damage for their amount of HP consumption and CP cost, (Which aggravates me, considering that Fayt, who has no prior combat experience, can somehow deal mass quantities of damage over Albel, who is a trained swordsman, though in the first Japanese version, Albel's Dragon Roar could own Dimension Door with no fuss).
A good tactic, beef up his final weapon with a couple ATK/DEF 30% bonus, and use a something to add an attack descision or two, and you'll be plowing enemies down with record speed. Add berserk and Increase HP Defense, along with 9999 ATK, and Albel will suddenly rip any foes apart like wet tissue paper. But that's if you practice, and find what you can do best.
Still, I don't care. In my eyes, Albel will be number one, no matter what.
