Well, my favorite base combat class is the monk; only the pure monk (not quarterstaff specialist, not kama-specialist, not throwing weapons specialist).

And, well... What the hell kind of specialty could I have to pick a prestige class?

The only really applicable and compatible ones (in my opinion) would be...

Weapon Master, though that would limit which Feats I can get since I have to get a load of combat feats.

Blackguard, though this seems to heavily favor rogues with poisoning weapons and sneak attack bonuses.

Shadow Dancer, but this class again focuses on stealth, which means that's less skill points for non stealth skills like Tumble, Heal, Discipline, etc.

Or should I perhaps make a pure monk?

I ask because I'm level three, nearly four (just started a new game) and spent quite a few points on Move Silently and Hide already, and stealth seems only semi-viable for my half-elf monk, since he doesn't get sneak attacks.

If the general opinion leans towards combat rather than stealth and finds the Weapon Master unfavorable, I'll start spending my skill points on combat skills and Feats on general monk and combat feats.

What do you guys think?

Nobody commenting on a D&D game? How can it be so unexpectedly disheartening? Woe is me!

This still doesn't surprise me.

It's like Neverwinter Nights isn't the most popular D&D video game ever made...

Yeah. You're right. It was foolish to expect a bunch of kids on Gaia to actually respond to this.

I guess it kind of answered another question I had about modern, younger gamers and their short attention spans and hesitance to play anything more than three years old.

Silly me, expecting more from internet children. I feel vacuous.

Well duh no one plays a really old games with no Nostalgia Goggles because they have aged badly and quite awful compared to more modern games.

Unless your playing it for A Dance with Rogues

Neverwinter Nights hasn't aged badly at all... in fact, it's still one of BioWare's top games ever, just like Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect. Just because ANY game is old doesn't automatically mean it's bad. There are barely any modern games that compare to NWN (strictly speaking of D&D style RPGs) except for Dragon Age, which is made by the same developer and based on their experience with NWN and its sequel. The only comparable game I've tried is Divinity: Original Sin, and it isn't nearly as great as NWN.

Me and my friends still play direct connect NWN and I was chosen (against my will) to be the warrior of the group. I don't like being a fighter or barbarian, so I chose monk. All I want is advice from someone who isn't in my circle of friends. It's just saddening that people forget great games just because of their age, which is preposterous. Especially since these games aren't even that old, relatively speaking. They're only old to... well, kids. The same kind of kids who buy each new game and forget about games more than a few years old.

I used to play it and enjoyed it but I would rather discuss the game with a turnip than you because the turnip is less obnoxious and has a better personality.

While you may have a point about my personality, I would love to discuss it with just about anyone who has played it for any significant period of time, including you. I've always loved chatting with fans of D&D and just asking what they've done, characters they've made, secrets they've found (at least in the video game), and so on. I'm open to new ideas at any time. In fact, just a few months ago when I first posted this, I received a PM with details alluding to a very interesting combination of Druid and Monk (since they both benefit from Dexterity and Wisdom).

That is absolutely my favorite aspect of D&D: that the majority of D&D fans I've met (and I've met a large amount...) tend to like debating and talking about various D&D things. It's just a closeness that this genre of entertainment breeds, I think. It's the same with fans of The Elder Scrolls, I've spent hours discussing it with people and I enjoy it immensely.

I didn't mean to particularly offend you, at any rate. It just bugs me how easily good things are forgotten in this day and age. I mean, I've spent hours playing games like Baldur's Gate and Diablo II but there's hardly anyone around here to speak to it about... It's sad, honestly, and it makes me sad and a bit defensive (and the same could be said of my friends). But no matter what, I don't mean to offend anyone. What I said earlier was purely sardonic in an effort to bump this thread and have someone actually respond about my ideas or reply with their own.

I understand where you are coming from and I know the pain of dealing with people who are oblivious to the gems of the gaming industry but there is nothing we can do about it. Unfortunately it has been ages since I played Neverwinter Nights and sadly, Steam does not currently offer it and I doubt they ever will. I do, however, own Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition but I have been preoccupied with other titles at the moment. Yet as much as I enjoy these older games they are outdated in terms of gameplay and that makes it difficult for even someone like myself to enjoy them.

I agree mostly with what you said, but I think NWN isn't honestly that dated. It's very streamlined and easy to use, the graphics are still magnificent (for its age), and the interface is astoundingly simple. Strictly speaking of gameplay (especially with the Baldur's Gate style freeze-frame tactical option) it's really fun and simple and honestly not that dated. What is dated is the... graphics, cheesy voice acting, D&D 3.5 rules... a few other trivial things.

I'm not really sure since my opinion is biased, but I got a few gamers that have never even played a D&D game to get into it. They all loved it, though they mostly compared it to Dragon Age Origins when Origins is the mind child of NWN... Which generally makes me believe that anyone who likes Dragon Age Origins (a load of people) would possibly enjoy Neverwinter Nights. They just need to be introduced to it, I think. The same could be said about Baldur's Gate, especially the new and improved Enhanced Edition, but that would probably be even harder since it's much more clunky and the graphics are even more dated.

But you trust and believe I will soon be getting the Enhanced Edition for myself whenever I finish my current NWN re-playthrough. I only played the original Baldur's Gate a few times at my friends house before he got me addicted to NWN when I was a kid.
