It seems like people are hiped up about the new(last) .Hack game //LINK. I have my reservations about it considering .Hack is a story driven franchise, and to be honest, //LINK really doesn't have a story. Even so it looks like it may be fun and you get used to the designs.
However, there are two things that irk me:
First, why does every character and their dog need an Xth form?! To anyone that doesn't remember, the Xth form was Haseo final form near the end of //G.U.s story. For all intense purposes this form was HASEO'S thing! There are only three characters that make a little bit of sense having it: Haseo because he's the one that invented it(in a sense); Kite because he's overdue for an upgrade and his looks good; and Tokio because his power involves mooching off the powers of the returning characters. Tsukasa's looks cool, but he doesn't need it to call the guardian. The rest...Are just annoying to look at.
Second, why is there no design consistancy? This has more to do with the returning characters than the characters made for //LINK. Their game designs don't match with their manga designs, which contradict their anime designs, which don't add up to their original manga designs, which don't look anything like the desings from the games they came from!
And because I'm sure you're probably thinking WTF at the moment here's a visual using my favorite character, Azure Flame Kite from .Hack//G.U.:
Here's what he looks like in the //LINK game:
here's what he looks like in the manga:
here's what he looked in the //G.U. prequel, .Hack//ROOTS:
here's what he looked like in the //G.U.+ manga:
and here's the original game design:
And for fun here's the concept art:
Is is just me or does it feel like I'm looking at a different person with each passing image?
Anyway, that's the type of inconsistancy that happens in //LINK, not just with the designs but with the story. Well, the game is supposed to be different, so I'll hold out hope.
